Back to: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Nick Arcade prototype)/Comparisons.

Chemical Plant Zone exists in this prototype, but is not accessible during normal play and is referred to as "Marble Zone" in the level select menu. Nevertheless, a demo was recorded for this stage, so leave the controller long enough on the title screen, and you'll see Sonic and Tails navigate the first section of act 1.

At first glance the stage looks pretty ordinary. Most of the graphics are here and there are some objects too.

The key difference? The background is pink! It also lacks any animation, save for a few rotating palettes.

Some differences aren't as obvious, such as the lower building in the background.

The demo takes the high route, which it needs to avoid this dead end. Aside from being non-functional, it appears the tubes were meant to be accessed from the side, rather than the top.

The loops have slanted edges.

Take the high route and eventually your luck will run out. The collision hasn't been set up properly for the latter half of the stage, so Sonic and Tails will fall through the floor and get stuck.

Act 2

Act 2 shares the same layout as act 1, the only difference is Sonic and Tails start inside a wall.

There are no objects this time, but there are some curiously placed rings.

Act 3

Again, no change to the level layout in act 3, but this time Sonic and Tails start above ground.
