The Sonic the Hedgehog Game Gear Prototype is a prototype Game Gear ROM that served as a Press demo, a demo for game magazines to demonstrate how the game works. It is still in transitional stages from the Master System version which is evident in this version. It is a short demo of the game, only one level long.

Known Differences
This is a very simple prototype, containing just the first Act of Green Hill Zone, which plays on a loop. It shares more in common with the Sega Master System version of the game than the final Game Gear version, having not yet been optimised for the smaller display. Despite this, it is a fully functional, albeit short, version of the game.
Startup
*There is no Sega Logo in the beginning, just like the Master System version.

*Sonic is placed further right at level startup.

*Sonics pallette changes to a darker blue when passing the end level sign.

*A strange strip appears at the top of the level breifly, probably a glitch as touching it does nothing.

*The Invincibility stars are more similiar to the Master System version. The final game has 4 stars.

*Sonics sprite has not yet been finalized.

*The map layout is slightly different than any version.

*Game over screen is messed up due to some tile rearrangement.

*The mountain range has a similiar hue to the Master System version.

The Sonic the Hedgehog Game Gear prototype is a demo version of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Game Gear. It was compiled to demonstrate the Game Gear port to the gaming press.

Other levels are accessible through hacking, but as the art has been removed for other Zones, most crash upon startup.
