Sonic Generations is the name of a Sonic the Hedgehog video game currently in development by Sonic Team for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. A different but similar Nintendo 3DS version is being worked on in parallel by Dimps. Both titles exist to commemorate Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th Anniversary. It is rumoured (though not confirmed) that a PlayStation Vita version of the game may also be released. A listing for the game was found in Steam registries, possibly confirming a PC release too (which was officially confirmed by SEGA on October 11, 2011). While the game's name is just Sonic Generations in the West, in Japan the 3DS and PS3/360 versions have different names, with the 3DS release called Sonic Generations: Ao no Bouken (ソニック ジェネレーションズ 青の冒険) and the PS3/360 release called Sonic Generations: Shiro no Jikuu (ソニック ジェネレーションズ 白の時空).

Sonic Generations allows players to control both the pre-Sonic Adventure and post-Adventure designs for Sonic the Hedgehog and will feature remastered levels from Sonic's previous adventures. The game is divided into three eras: the Classic Era (pre-1998), the Dreamcast Era (1998-2008), and the Modern Era (2008 onwards) - "Classic Sonic" playing through the levels from a 2D (or 2.5D) "classic" perspective, "Modern Sonic" tackling them in a 2D/3D perspective, similar to Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colours.

The game was first announced in a teaser video posted by Sega on April 7th, 2011 on Sonic's official Facebook page. The game was announced for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and was scheduled for a 2011 release. It was announced later for the Nintendo 3DS in Nintendo Power magazine, paired with a November 2011 release date for all platforms. At E3 2011, SEGA revealed a trailer revealing City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2, with a further trailer appearing in mid-August detailing other levels.

A fourteen-day demo was released to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consumers on June 23, 2011 - the official date of Sonic's 20th anniversary. A second demo was scheduled for release October 18th on the Xbox Live, October 19th on the European Playstation Network, and October 25th for the Playstation Network in North America.

Gameplay

The gameplay will be split into two separate gameplay styles, separated by the character used.

The Classic gameplay style will be strictly 2.5D. Sonic will control more like his Mega Drive/Genesis counterpart, using Spin Dashes and the Spin Attack to hit enemies.

The Modern gameplay style will be 3D with transitions to 2.5D. This gameplay style represents his more recent titles Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors, where you use the Sonic Boost and the Homing Attack to advance.

3DS Differences

  • The 3DS version of Modern gameplay will be more in line with Sonic Rush/Rush Adventure/Colours DS with Boosting and Homing Attacks kept on the 2D plane.
  • The levels and the bosses in the 3DS version will NOT be the same as its console counterparts.
  • As shown in the gameplay of Green Hill Zone, the game with have the exact same level design for the Classic Era levels versus original layouts.

Levels

The levels between the PS3/360 version and the 3DS version, besides Green Hill Zone are different.
