Sonic 1: The Special Stages is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by SonicVann. This hack removes standard Sonic game play and replaces it with the Special Stages which normally were only accessible by the Goal Rings at the end of each stage.

The actual special stage layouts have not been touched, but the music and background art have been altered for every stage and the continue screen.
