Sonic & Knuckles is a downloadable version of the Sega Mega Drive game Sonic & Knuckles, released in 2009 for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade as part of the "Sega Vintage Collection" series. It has support for HDTV 1080p and contains leaderboards in addition to having voice support.

As of May 20, 2022, this version of Sonic & Knuckles has been delisted from Xbox Live alongside other re-releases of Sonic games on this and other platforms in preparation for the release of Sonic Origins^[9]^[10].

Gameplay

The game is run on an Mega Drive emulator and allows for control by either analog stick or D-pad. A custom Options screen is available, which allows the player to toggle a graphics smoothing filter, character selection, screen size adjustment, and custom button mapping. A custom Game Save option is also included, overriding the original game's Save Screen and Level Select. Leaderboards for Overall High Scores over Xbox Live Arcade and Achievements are supported.

This version mimics the original game's Lock-On Technology by detecting if players have downloaded previous Sonic games to their console. If either Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are detected, it will reveal the ability to play locked-on versions of the previous games. This means players can unlock Blue Sphere, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.

Although the custom title screen prevents some cheats from being used, if the player enables the level select (Angel Island Zone) and edit mode (Mushroom Hill Zone) cheats in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, enters a Special Stage and exits while holding the button, they can still use the reverse gravity feature in the remaining levels. However, this is pointless, as the player is unable to jump with any other button, even with the other buttons enabled (they all act as the same button).
