From Sonic Retro
Unlike its predecessor, SonED2 edits individual data files, allowing them to be managed manually, or through the use of other, more powerful data management tools such as the built-in ROMulan support. This ensures better flexibility in overall game data management, and has also helped to make SonED2 more powerful than the original SonED.
SonED2 is faster, more stable, and boasts more features than SonED. The two most noteworthy are probably the ability to edit Height Maps, and the ability to import Tiles, Blocks, and Chunks from .pcx or .tga images, both of which dramatically increase the room for creativity.
