SonED is a graphical editor that allows users to edit levels from various Sonic the Hedgehog games for the Sega Mega Drive. Known for its ease of use, the program can edit object placement, palette, art, and more. New users will find the program easy and introduces them into the world of editing and developing video games, as well as allowing returning users to use its advanced features, as noted below.

History

SonED (an acronym for "SONic EDitor") was created by Stealth from the Sonic hacking community. The program was originally shareware when it was first introduced. At first a program that cost $30 to buy, select few people bought this program. Eventually, someone had released their registered copy which led to Stealth leaving the scene. Then briefly afterwards, he came back to release newer versions of his SonED utility, this time for free.

It was also the first level editor to support Sonic CD for PC hacking abilities.

SonED2

SonED2 is a total re-build of the SonED tool that goes in a slightly different direction. Unlike its predecessor, SonED2 edits individual data files, allowing them to be managed manually. This ensures better flexibility in overall game data management, and has also helped to make SonED2 more powerful than the original SonED. SonED2 is faster, more stable and boasts more features. The two most noteworthy are probably the ability to edit Height Maps, and the ability to import Tiles, Blocks, and Chunks from .pcx images, both of which dramatically increase the room for creativity.
