Solaris is the sun god of Soleanna and the main antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog. Solaris initially exists as a tiny flame which is worshiped by the citizens of Soleanna. The Duke of Soleanna leads experiments into Solaris, in the hopes of using its time control powers to allow humanity to correct its past sins. However, during one such experiment, Solaris becomes unstable and splits into two forms - Iblis, the raw power, and Mephiles, the conscious mind. Mephiles is sealed into an artifact known as the "Scepter of Darkness" whilst the Duke is forced to seal Iblis inside of his young daughter, Princess Elise The Third. Before dying from wounds caused by the accident, he tells his daughter to grow up to be a strong queen who would never cry as doing so would destroy the seal on Iblis.
After killing Sonic, Mephiles is quick to rejoin with his counterpart after its release from Princess Elise, once again forming their complete form of Solaris. Solaris then plunges the world into darkness, preparing to bring the end of time itself. Before he can achieve this, he is defeated by a combined assault of Sonic, Shadow, and Silver using super transformation. During the battle against them, Solaris attacks by shooting meteors and firing out lasers, and increasing the amount of meteors and laser he uses during his second form. His defeat spirits Elise and Sonic back to before the fateful experiment. After some contemplation, Elise chooses to blow out the tiny flame that was Solaris and thus change history by erasing him from existence.
