Snively is a character created by DiC for the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog animated TV series (SatAM). He is a cowardly subordinate of Dr. Robotnik, assisting in Robotnik's schemes and taking the blame for when they don't work.

Character conception

While created for the TV series, Snively's first appearance was in the US Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series by Archie Comics. It took several months for Snively to become a regular member of the cast, suggesting, as the Archie comics were using the then-unfinished DiC designs as a base, that he was a late addition the show.

The character was initially used for comic relief but as the series progressed, his relationship with Robotnik became more complex. He was revealed to be Robotnik's nephew, and after years of abuse began working against his boss. In the comics, Snively was responsible for the death of Robotnik, having programmed his Ultimate Annihilator weapon to wipe the mad dictator from existence, after which he attempted (and failed) to rule Mobius on his own.

In the planned third season of the cartoon, Snively was to have tried to rule Robotroplis, but failing to do so, he seek help from the captured Ixis Naugus. This would accidentally free Robotnik and King Acorn, and having been reduced not simply to a lackey but to an insignificant nothing, Snively would rebel against Naugus and Robotnik and join Sonic and the Freedom Fighters.

There was an attempt to include Snively in Sonic the Comic, but having been told the character was off-limits, a similar role was filled by Grimer Wormtongue.
