<forumuser name="Puto" /> Puto (sometimes known as Pu7o or Pu7ø) is a Português ROM hacker, and has been a member of the Sonic scene since August of 2005. He is a member of Team Megamix, and is responsible for making many technical breakthroughs, both in regards to documenting the SMPS engine and understanding the Sonic game engine in general.

His specialties are mainly sound-related--he helped Tweaker to put Sonic 1's sound driver into Sonic 2, and he has extensive knowledge of the SMPS engine, perhaps even beyond that of most people in the scene. In addition, he has created countless numbers of custom sound imports, both for his hack and out of general boredom. Each is usually of above-average quality, taking advantage of modulation, panning, and patch changes; in contrast, most imports are very simple in comparison.

History

Puto's initial foray in the scene (via Simon Wai's Sonic 2 Beta Page) consisted primarily of spouting various memes, both on the forums and in the Sonic Retro IRC channel. Later, he became responsible for creating the topic that initially held Stealth's Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog, a ROM hack that featured Knuckles the Echidna as a playable character in the original 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog for the Mega Drive.

He would be later responsible for creating STFUBot, an IRC bot with various functions ranging from joke commands to allowing introductions for any registered users who entered a channel. It would later cease to exist as a result of a lack of hosting, although a bot named TacoBot now exists which serves similar functions (such as auto-opping people who enter a certain channel).

Around December of 2006, Puto decided to get into ROM hacking. He quickly developed ASM skills that granted him Tech Membership on the Sonic Retro forums. He has since continued his efforts with ROM hacking, although he hasn't publicly released any of his work in some time.

Projects

In 2007 Puto created a standalone Super Sonic in Sonic 1 hack which was released in this thread. Beta 1 can be downloaded here and Beta 4 can be downloaded here. Puto's most infamous hack is Sonic 1 Remastered, which features various assembly changes as well as new music and a few other things. In addition, he worked on Sonic Megamix as a general programmer and musician, as well as on drx's Tails in Sonic 1--even going as far as to create his own revision entirely from scratch at a later date.

In May of 2008, he released smps2xm, a program that converts songs from SMPS to XM. In December 2008, he released xm4smps, a spiritual successor to xm3smps which converts songs from XM to SMPS.
