Various monitors in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

A monitor is a breakable object which in appearance is a small box which resembles a television or computer monitor. The player receives a power-up or bonus upon breaking it open. Monitors can be broken from directly above or from the sides, whilst the player is either jumping or rolling. When hit from below, the monitor will fall to the ground. In Sonic Adventure, these are referred to as Item Boxes.

Monitors that appear in more than one game

  • Eggman - hurts or kills the player. This is the only monitor to actually be harmful. First appeared in Sonic 2.
  • Extra life - gives the player an extra life. In Sonic 2's competition game, Sonic and Tails have their own respective monitors which give a specific character an extra life, regardless of who broke it.
  • Invincibility - gives the player invincibility.
  • Shield - gives the player a shield.
  • Speed shoes - increases the player's speed temporarily.
  • Super ring - gives the player 10 rings in all games except Sonic Adventure, where the number of rings is specified (5, 10, 20 or 40) or randomised (1, 5, 10, 20 or 40).

Monitors that appear in only one or two games

  • Emerald (Sonic Triple Trouble) - transports the player to a special stage.
  • Goggles (Sonic 1) - probably protected Sonic from drowning in the same way as a water shield. Their functionality has been removed from the finished game and can only be seen through hacking; it does nothing.
  • Pogo (Sonic Chaos) - gives the player a small spring which sticks to their feet. The pogo monitor was also hidden in Sonic 2, and was only viewable via hacking.
  • Rocket shoes (Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble) - gives Sonic rocket shoes which enable him to fly around temporarily.
  • "S" (Sonic 3) - only available in debug mode, gives Sonic 50 rings and instantly turns him into Super Sonic, irrespective of how many emeralds he has. The "S" monitor was also hidden in Sonic 1, and was only viewable via hacking — it did nothing.
  • Snowboard (Sonic Triple Trouble) - gives Sonic a snowboard.
  • Teleport (Sonic 2) - switches Sonic and Tails' positions in competition mode and debug mode
  • Switch (Knuckles' Chaotix) - switches the characters's positions for a certain amount of time
  • Combine Ring (Knuckles' Chaotix) - protects your rings so if the first player is hit, he only loses one ring. He has a few seconds to get that ring, otherwise it breaks into all the lost rings. Getting the single ring recovers all your lost rings.
  • Big and Small (Knuckles' Chaotix) - resizes the character who breaks the monitor for a certain amount of time.
  • Change Character (Knuckles' Chaotix) - This monitor cycles between faces of possible characters. When broken, the second player becomes whoever was pictured at the time for a certain amount of time.
