MimicMedia:IDW Mimic Profile 1.jpg[2] is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing. He is a mimic octopus that can copy the physical appearance of anybody, and serves as a recurring villain and enemy of Whisper the Wolf.

Character conception

Mimic was an idea Ian Flynn came up with when working on the Archie Comics Sonic series. He wanted to introduce a metamorphic octopus villain with shapeshifting abilities, but never found the right story to introduce him in.[3] He had a rough plot idea involving him being an assassin infiltrator type character that didn't hinge on anything else.[4] When creating the Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper mini series for IDW Publishing, Flynn found the opportunity to use his Mimic octopus idea as an antagonist for Whisper.[3] When designing Mimic, Evan Stanley said "his design came together on nearly the first pass. All we did was change his color from red to blue, give him a mask like Whisper’s, and figure out his “tells” when he’s transformed."[5]

Personality and traits

According to Whisper, Mimic is a cold hearted and manipulative man who is even willing to kill to achieve his goals. He too seems to have a big grudge against Whisper, who survived his plan on taking down the Diamond Cutters by making an alliance with Eggman.

He has the power to mimic other people or objects with his shapeshifting abilities. Even the cloak he wears is created with his powers. Ian Flynn stated that he imagines Mimic takes on properties similar to what he's mimicking. If Mimic turns into an Egg Pawn like he did in Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys 2, touching it should feel rigid and sturdy like steel, but he couldn't shrug off damage like real armor could. And he shouldn't be able to create weapons like guns.[6]

History

First seen in the Tangle & Whisper miniseries, Mimic used to be part of a team called the Diamond Cutters along Whisper but he once betrayed the team by temporarly joining forces with Dr. Eggman in order to elliminate the Diamond Cutters. Whisper was the only survivor. In the Tangle & Whisper miniseries, he fought against Tangle and Whisper and was captured by the two protagonists and sent to prison in a test chamber built by Tails. Later, he joined forces with Dr. Starline, Zavok, Rough and Tumble in the Bad Guys miniseries. After that, he seems to be searching for Whisper.
