Kart Race (カートレースMedia:SonicAdventure2 DC JP manual.pdf[1]) is a mini-game in Sonic Adventure 2 based on the Route 101 and Route 280 stages from the main game. It is unlocked for single-player by completing either of the two stages once in Story mode, and for two-player when both stages have been cleared.

Gameplay

Kart Race is a three-lap race around a closed circuit with six drivers, of which four or five will be computer-controlled depending on how many players are playing, and the goal is to finish a race in first place. When playing a two-player game, a horizontal split-screen is used as opposed to the vertical split-screen used in other two-player modes.

The controls are the same as in the Route 101 and Route 280 stages - the A button is used for accelerating, and the B button is used for braking. By tapping then holding down A the player will be able to drift, which is useful on corners and for maintaining speed acquired from boosting or downhill. To stop drifting, the player should release the stick for a second. For ever 20 Rings collected, the player will be able to boost by pressing Y, however only one boost can be held at a time. If a player falls off the track, they will instantly be placed back on the track.

There are a total of three courses available by default: Beginner, Standard and Expert. Winning each of the courses in single-player will award an Emblem, for a total of three Emblems.

Characters

By default, all six of the main playable characters are available for Kart Race. More characters and kart designs can be added via downloadable content in the Dreamcast version, or by completing all of a character's missions in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and the 2012 re-release. Each character has different stat distributions for Top Speed (SPD), Acceleration (ACL), Braking (BRK) and Grip (GRP).
