Not to be confused with the iconic level from the original game Green Hill Zone.

Fourth Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)
Number of Acts: 3
Level theme: tropical island
Boss: Mecha Pig

Green Hills Zone is the fourth zone in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which resembles Green Hill Zone from the Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog, from which it is named after. You may recognize the background music -- It is an instrumental mix of "Sonic - You Can Do Anything" off of the Sonic CD soundtrack; The two games share music composer Naofumi Hataya. The boss is a Pig robot with a fairly predictable jumping/rolling attack pattern. However, getting to him in the first place is another matter entirely, especially with the limited screen size of the Game Gear version.

The chaos emerald requires some rather fancy footwork. In act 2, there will be a section with spring based around spike pits, much like the start of act 3. Gain speed on the ramp before the pits, then constantly jump from spring to spring to reach a ledge housing the gem. Note: it is easy to bypass this ledge.

Instruction Manual Description

Race through loops and hidden passageways. Ride moving platforms over pits filled with spikes. Spring high in the air over tops and terrain. Grab those Rings and items, and keep on the lookout for Robotnik's badniks!

Villains

Badniks

  • New Motora — Similar to Moto Bug. Beetle bots that simply roll back and forth in a small area.
  • Meleon — Also known as Newtron. Chameleon bots that appear on walls, then transform into missiles and fire themselves on a horizontal path in Sonic's direction.
