Drill Eggman
Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)
Level: Emerald Hill Zone
Hits to defeat: 8

Drill Eggman (ドリルエッグマン)[1], also known as Egg Drillster[2], is the first boss of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Appearing at the end of the second Act of Emerald Hill Zone, Dr. Eggman arrives in grand style, descending from the sky in a modified Egg Mobile. Placing his machine inside the shell of a buggy-esque motorized terrestrial vehicle, Eggman begins his attack upon Sonic the Hedgehog and his newest companion, Miles "Tails" Prower.

Strategy

Moving across the screen first from right to left, the player must avoid having the vehicle run into them, especially from the pointed drill attached to the hood. The best way to avoid attack is by jumping over the car as it drives by, the completely open roof area prime real estate to attack Eggman's first in a long line of new boss creations. Curling up into the spin attack and jumping on top of the mad doctor as he drives from left to right and back again is the best way to enact damage upon him. However, it must be noted that even while Sonic or "Tails" are curled up in the classic spin, the drill will cause damage, making it the one spot on the car Sonic can not defend himself from. If the player is lucky, hits seven and eight will happen during one of Eggman's runs through the boss field, resulting in the destruction of the buggy shell.

If only seven hits have befallen the scientist before he disappears off screen, his return will be precipitated with the spiked drill, shooting off and coming across Sonic's path before the doctor shows his smiling face. Jumping over the drill and landing one more hit on the Eggmobile will cause its car-like shell to explode, its tires bouncing away. The Eggmobile, the only one in the entire game (and the series) powered by helicopter blades, flies onwards and upwards, Eggman preparing to lick his wounds and fight another day. With their first success under their belt, Sonic and "Tails" need only to jump on the Capsule to their right before heading off to the Chemical Plant Zone.

The boss machine makes its return in Sonic Advance's X-Zone, albeit only needing four hits and sans the helicoptered Egg Mobile.

Sonic Cafe

The Sonic Cafe mobile phone port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, while maintaining the same fight pattern, has a slight redesign, containing more visible armor and obstructing Eggman's face.

Other appearances

A tiny version of Drill Eggman appears as one of the enemies dispensed by Gachapandora, the boss of Sonic Mania's Metallic Madness Zone.
