Dr. Starline is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing. He is a shadowy scientist who debuted as a fanatic of Dr. Eggman and would become his apprentice until he was fired. He still remained loyal to Eggman and aimed to conquer the world on behalf of him, but would soon decide to become his superior replacement, becoming an independent villain with plans to take down the Eggman Empire as well as Sonic and friends. To help him in his ambitions, he created the imposters Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec to surpass and replace Sonic and Tails.

Character conception

According to Ian Flynn, the idea for Dr. Starline was directly inspired by the "**********" character in Chaotix. The connections linking Starline to the glitch character include the white and red colour scheme, the platypus being a monotreme like the echidna, and his name coming from the "line of stars" that make up the glitch character's name in Chaotix's stage select screen^[2]^[3].

According to Evan Stanley, Dr. Starline was created as a spiritual successor to white-furred echidna villains who have appeared in past comics, namely Doctor Zachary and Dr. Finitevus^[4].
