The Death Egg is a massive orbital fortress, constructed by Dr. Eggman. A true study in evil mega-engineering, the spherical space station resembles the face of Eggman himself, with concave eye-sockets, a nose and a moustache. Hosting some of the Doctor's most deadly creations of all time, this vast stronghold serves as the scientist's final base in the early Sega Mega Drive-era games. The Death Egg is a tribute to the Death Star, a space station in the Star Wars series.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)

Death Egg Zone contained only the final two bosses, Mecha Sonic and a giant Eggman shaped robot piloted by the Doctor himself, also named Death Egg. After the robot is defeated, the explosion sets of a chain reaction, engulfing the space station in flames. The full exterior of the Death Egg is only depicted in the Zone's level select icon.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The Death Egg crashing into Angel Island.

Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Death Egg crash lands on the legendary Floating Island, pushing it down to the planet's surface. The repaired Death Egg, ready for launch, can be seen in the background of Launch Base Zone. At the end of Act 2, Sonic boards the space station as it is being launched, and defeats Eggman again in a battle on the underside of the ascending station's hull. The resulting explosion damages the Death Egg, averting its relaunch.

Sonic & Knuckles

Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Death Egg falls out of the sky and lands on the volcano of the Floating Island. The Death Egg can be seen resting on top of the volcano in the background of Lava Reef Zone and Hidden Palace Zone. At the end of the game, the Death Egg was launched again, using the power of the stolen Master Emerald. It then became a two-Act Zone playable by Sonic and/or Tails containing an Act 1 boss and three Act 2 bosses (including Tails' final boss). After defeating the final boss, the Death Egg was (presumably) destroyed.

Sonic Drift 2

In Sonic Drift 2, the Death Egg is seen at the end of Milky Way, the penultimate track of the Blue Chaos GP. The final track of the Blue Chaos GP is the Death Egg itself.

Sonic the Fighters

Sonic the Fighters introduces the Death Egg II, which once again is home to two bosses. Although retaining the shape of the original Death Egg, it is different in the fact many pronged girders came off in different directions.

Sonic Battle

In Sonic Battle, Eggman's latest Death Egg houses his "Final Egg Blaster" weapon. The final battle against Emerl is situated there. Seen from Holy Summit, this iteration of the Death Egg is hemispherical and looks a more like the Space Colony ARK.

Sonic Generations

In Sonic Generations, Sonic revisits past adventures as the Time Eater wreaks havoc across time and space. The Death Egg appears in the background of Sky Sanctuary, as first depicted in Sonic & Knuckles. The Death Egg is also the setting of the Death Egg Robot boss battle, as first depicted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic Generations (3DS)

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Sonic once again battles the Big Arm boss on a platform underneath the Death Egg, as first depicted in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II introduces the Death Egg mk.II, a space station built around the Little Planet. It first appears, partially constructed, in the background of the White Park Zone Boss level. The completed Death Egg mk.II is the setting of the game's final Zone.

Sonic Runners

The Death Egg appears as a companion in Sonic Runners. Its effect is the possibility of reviving for free after being defeated, with the chances being stronger for Power-type characters, such as Knuckles.

LEGO Dimensions

A LEGO version of the Death Egg appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack.

Sonic Runners Adventure

The Death Egg appears in the background of Sky Sanctuary.

Sonic Forces

The Death Egg returns in Sonic Forces where it is used as a prison for many captured civilians, including Sonic. Later in the story, the Resistance sends Classic Sonic up to the Death Egg to destroy it, believing it to be the source of the Phantom Ruby's power.

Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW comics)

The Death Egg appeared broken on Scrapnik Island, where it became the home of many old Badniks left behind after Sonic's battles with Eggman. Many of them were repaired by E-117 Sigma to the best of his ability. It notably became the new home of Mecha Knuckles and Mecha Sonic Mk. II.
