Cream the Rabbit (Japanese: クリーム・ザ・ラビット, Kurīmu za Rabitto) is a recurring character in the Sonic the Hedgehog games and related media. Introduced to the Sonic series in 2002 as hidden artwork in Sonic Mega Collection, Cream debuted for real as a playable character in Sonic Advance 2. A young rabbit with a polite manner and a perpetually sunny outlook, Cream is followed almost everywhere by her chao, Cheese.

Character Conception

Prototype sketches for Cream showing some alternate designs.

During the development of Sonic Heroes, Sonic Team needed several new characters to fill out the 12-man playable roster. Along with a ressurected Team Chaotix, E-123 Omega and Cream were designed specificly for a Heroes role, with the big-eared rabbit to serve as the flight member for Team Rose.

However, with Sonic Advance 2 being developed in parallel, an opportunity existed to introduce Cream to the franchise earlier, so players would already be familiar with her by the time that the main series Heroes title was launched - rather than being confronted with two entirely new characters at once. As such, Cream's first playable appearence came in December 2002: 14 months before the release of the game for which she was actually devised. This had the added advantage of establishing Cream in the games before television, as she was to appear in the first episode of Sonic X in March 2003.

Personality and Traits

Thanks for saving me, Sonic. It was scary in the dark but I tried to be brave.

— Cream after her rescue in Sonic Generations (HD)

Cream is amongst the youngest of the Sonic characters, and still retains a childish naïveté which influences her interactions with other members of the cast. She's also the only one of the animal protaganists to have any relatives in the games: her mother, Vanilla the Rabbit, who's raised Cream to be unfailingly polite and kind to others - even Dr. Eggman, despite being kidnapped by him (twice). Although Cream can fight to help out her friends out on their mutual adventures, she dislikes violence in general and would prefer never to have to get antagonistic with anyone.

At times, Cream is to Amy Rose what Tails is to Sonic: the younger and slightly awe-struck sidekick. While Cream's innocence and enthusiasm endears her to most of the other characters, it can occasionally get on the nerves of some of her more serious comrades - notably Blaze the Cat in Sonic Rush.

Appearences

Cream appears in the following Sonic games:

Sonic Mega Collection (as artwork); Sonic Advance 2; Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut; Sonic Battle; Sonic Heroes; Shadow the Hedgehog; Sonic Riders; Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity; Sonic Free Riders; Sonic Rush; Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood; Sonic Colours (DS), Sonic Generations (HD).

Sonic Advance 2

Cream being snatched in Sonic Advance 2

Cream's story debut is at the Egg Hammer Tank II boss of Leaf Forest. Sonic runs into his fat nemesis while Eggman's machine is gripping Cream and Cheese in its steely fist; and Cream grabs onto the hedgehog's spines after getting blown up at the boss' destruction. The rabbit is amazed to be rescued by "the famous Mr. Sonic", although the blue blur rather impatiently just runs off while Cream is trying to explain that Vanilla is still imperiled. As such, Cream decides to take on the fat man herself, using her ears to fly through stages and her friend Cheese as a method of attack

In the cutscene before True Area 53, Eggman captures Vanilla (along with a bunch of flickies) and takes her to space in an Egg Capsule - a development with which Cream is understandably upset. After Sonic (somehow) saves her mother from going splat after orbital re-entry, she and Cream share a tearful reunion. Sonic runs off before listening to anything they might have to say again.

Sonic Adventure DX

Cream was retroactively added into Sonic Adventure for the remake. She drops the Ice Key in Station Square after Casinopolis, and appears on a billboard in Mystic Ruins after the game is completed.

Sonic Heroes

A member of Team Rose along with Big and Amy, Cream spends Sonic Heroes searching for Cheese's twin, a chao called Chocola. It transpires that Neo Metal Sonic has kidnapped the chao - along with Froggy - to extract the secret of Chaos Zero's transformative abilities. Cream's repertoire of skills includes Thunder Shoot and Chao Attack, as well as the Flower Festival Team Blast.

Even though it's her first time teaming up with Amy, Cream is quick to learn that it's best not to challenge the pink hedgehog's delusions about Sonic - backing quite quickly out of a conversation to that effect in Casino Park.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Cream is not a mission companion character in Shadow the Hedgehog, but does appear as the Hero mission objective for Shadow and Amy in Cryptic Castle. Amy reports that - rather unwisely - Cream just wandered off into Eggman's forboding fortress, and asks Shadow to help find her. Somehow the rabbit has gotten herself stuck behind a fake wall, and lost Cheese deeper in the castle. If Shadow chooses to keep on with the Hero route, the chao can be discovered hidden behind a giant moving wall, imprisoned with a load of other chao.

Sonic Battle

In Sonic Battle, Cream seems to be living at Amy's apartment in Central City. The rabbit's aversion to boxercise leaves Amy speculating that "She's been acting wierd lately. Maybe she's just going through some changes", but eventually Cream and Cheese are roped in to helping train Emerl. After Amy leaves the robot with Cream so she can go buy dieting equipment she saw on an infomercial, Dr. Eggman bursts in with Chaos Gamma and the E-121 Phis to kidnap them.

Cream's story is the sixth of eight, and is spent almost entirely inside Gimme Shelter, Eggman's base under Night Babylon. Eggman plans to use Cream and Cheese as hostages in a trap for Sonic, but after Emerl teaches Cream that violence really is the answer to life's problems, they all attack Chaos Gamma and escape.

Sonic Riders

Not only is she cute, but this talented bunny can fly using her ears. She can also use Cheese, her constant sidekick Chao, to attack other racers.

— Cream's profile on the Sonic Riders offiical website

Cream plays no role in the storyline of Sonic Riders, but she is an unlockable character in free or multiplayer races (by beating the Hero story). She has a high Dash stat, but poor Power and Cornering. As in Heroes, Cream is Fly Type here, able to flap her ears and pass through flight rings above the racetrack. Her default board is the Smile Extreme Gear, manufactured by Robotnik Corp. Her attacks are:

  • Level 1: Sad Face
Cream puts a sad look on her face to startle opponents, making them lose their balance.
  • Level 2: Cheese Tornado
Cream calls on her sidekick Cheese to come out and attack a nearby opponent, knocking them off balance.
  • Level 3: Cheese Attack
Cream calls on her sidekick Cheese to come out and pester a nearby opponent, distracting them and knocking them off balance.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

Sonic Generations (HD)

Cream is a sweet girl rabbit who is a friend of the Chao. She's inseperable from her Chao friend, Cheese. She gives her best at anything she tries, and she's always full of curiosity. Her mom raised her to be good, so Cream is well-behaved and polite.

— In-game character profile from Generations

Cream is a polite girl, and the 6 year old daughter of Vanilla the Rabbit. She was introduced to the world in the artwork section of Sonic Mega Collection. She finally made her playable debut in Sonic Advance 2 for the Game Boy Advance, when she gets kidnapped by Doctor Eggman. Sonic rescues her and she becomes playable, using her ears to fly and her friend Cheese as a method of attack. Later, Vanilla gets kidnapped by Eggman, but is rescued by Super Sonic. Cream is seen as a cameo in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut for the Nintendo GameCube after playing the Casinopolis level (She is flying through the sky, apparently dropping the ice key that appears at that point in the game). She also appears in a billboard in Mystic Ruins after the game is won.

She is part of Team Rose (acting as their flight member) for beginners' gameplay in Sonic Heroes, a multi-platform release featuring 12 characters in 4 sets to play. The trio are set to find Cheese's brother, Chocola, a brown Chao (as well as Big the Cat's friend, Froggy). In the game, she can only use Cheese to attack when the other two team members are incapacitated.

She appeared in Sonic Rush, as Blaze the Cat's partner. She met Blaze after the Night Carnival, and invited Blaze over to her house for tea. Later, Cream is captured by Dr. Eggman, and Blaze goes to rescue her. Once Eggman is defeated, Cream is rescued by Blaze, and both return to Sonic and Tails.

Cream has also appeared in Sonic Battle, Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic X. In Sonic Advance 3, Cream simply gets lost in Cyber Track Zone and waits for Sonic to pick her up. She interestingly makes no note of Gemerl's similarities to Emerl. She is also partially responsible for Gemerl's re-programming and repairing in the end. Gemerl is reprogrammed to act exactly like Emerl. A Sonic X DVD case recreates this scene with using Emerl instead of Gemerl.

Cream is voiced by Sayaka Aoki in Japanese. In English, she is voiced by Rebecca Honig (Sonic X-2010), Sarah Wulfeck (2004 games) and Michelle Ruff (2010-present).

Trivia

  • Cream is the only character whose 4Kids voice actor was cast before her game voice actor.
  • Cream's ears appear to be attached on the wrong way, as the auricles would face backwards if the ears were fully extended. The same is true for Vanilla. Though, it should be noted that rabbits have the ability to turn their ears up to 180 degrees.
  • She is the only female character that has her weight revealed. Most likely because she's too young to feel embarrassed about it.
