I've put the replace message in this category to make it big and obvious and it gives me an excuse to announce things.

The Wii always renders internally at 640x480 (or less), however, many games support anamorphic widescreen. I'm at some point going to copy the template changes on Sega Retro to Sonic Retro, and the result of that is that most of our Wii title screens will start looking like garbage. Because none of our Wii screenshots are the correct size.

What I am thinking, and I'm not in a good position to do it myself, is that, at least for the title screens at this stage, we should be looking to take screenshots twice:

  • One intended for 4:3 displays - every Wii game should support that
  • Another intended for 16:9 widescreen displays. These will be anamorphic widescreen screenshots.

Both will be 640x480, the latter appearing "squashed" (which the templates will resolve). This will apply to some older systems as well (and DVD), but being such a late entry to the non-HD market, it is fairly safe to assume many Wii games were designed primarily for 16:9 televisions, even if the underlying technology is not. I might add a switch to flip between the two (much like Sonic 3D and its Mega Drive/Saturn switch), but they will almost certainly be used in comparison pages which I'm trying to push.

So to reiterate, Sonic and the Secret Rings needs two title screens(*). Both should be 640x480. No Wii screenshots should ever be 852x480, 720p, 1080p or whatever crazy resolution the Dolphin emulator supports. The real hardware can only do 640x480.

This could also be the case with the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, however, I don't know how appropriate it will be in those circumstances. Were PS2 games really being written with 16:9 displays in mind, or was it more of an afterthought? Also if the game clearly hasn't been optimised for one resolution or the other, it's not worth taking screenshots. I'd expect both screenshots to look exactly the same anyway.

(* there's actually more required on top of this because there are multiple languages - when in doubt, take more screenshots)
