Bubbler (バブラー[1]) is a scrapped enemy planned for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Overview
It is a three-eyed floating fish (also known as Mother Bubbler (マザーバブラー[1])) that flies in the air using rocket propulsion. As it flies, it would drop smaller, exploding enemies (Bubbler) from the exhaust pipes on the sides of its body that swell up and explode into foam which Sonic and Tails would need to avoid. This is listed as being set to appear in "Chemical Factory"[1] (Chemical Plant Zone).
While the graphics for the object exist in two early prototypes of Sonic 2, the "Nick Arcade" and "Simon Wai" builds, it would not be until the August 21st "Alpha" build where code was attached. It was removed entirely in subsequent prototypes, and by extension, does not feature in the final game.
The 2013 remake restores the enemy and makes it placeable in Chemical Plant Zone using edit mode where it functions much like it would in concept sketches, speeding up and dropping Bubblers whenever the player is underneath it. In this version of the game, the Mother Bubbler has a red palette.
Graphics for the enemy were created by Tom Payne.
