By jumping into the star ring while hitting a checkpoint, you enter the Bonus Stage. Entering requires a certain amount of rings similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
The stages are identical to Blue Spheres. Collecting a certain amount of Blue Spheres to complete the stage avoiding red spheres.
