BBat is a Badnik which could be found in Hidden Palace Zone in prototype versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, until that level was ultimately scrapped. The "BBata" name comes from source code found in the Nick Arcade prototype of the game[1].

Overview
BBat has the appearance of a mechanical bat with a pair of wings that spin around its body like propellers and a flame jet beneath its torso for flight. The enemy waits in the air for Sonic and Tails to get closer, then it spins its wings and attacks by quickly swooping down in a U-shaped pattern, ideally hitting the heroes at the lowest point of the arc. It is primarly placed on staircases where it is difficult to avoid if the player is not in a Spin Attack state. During development of Sonic 2 the BBat object has existed as early as the "Nick Arcade" prototype and was removed in "Beta 5", along with Redz and Stegway.
The Badnik's concept was later reused as Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Batbot. The Badnik itself gets a proper introduction in the 2013 remake of Sonic 2, with its attack pattern being relatively unchanged from its appearance in the prototypes.
Palette error

BBat looks like it was meant to use Sonic's palette as in-game it looks off. It uses palette 1, which causes its ears and flame jet to be miscoloured. If its palette is set to 0 (Sonic & Tails' palette), it looks a lot better. This issue was never fixed before its removal from the game altogether. The 2013 remake uses the corrected palette.
