In a SatAM episode, Antoine's last name was given as "DePardeaux"; however, this was only mentioned once (and likely made up on the spot by the writer working on the script), whereas the Archie comic has used "D'Coolette" repeatedly and consistently.

Antoine D' Coolette is a fictional anthropomorphic coyote created by DiC for the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog animated TV series (SatAM). A member of the Freedom Fighters, Antoine is usually portrayed as a coward, whose main function is to serve as comic relief.

Character conception

Antoine was envisoned by DiC as a pompous character with a comedic French accent, trying and failing to get on the good side of Princess Sally Acorn. He is jealous of Sonic the Hedgehog and is tormented by the rest of the cast, but sticks around in Knothole Village, helping out the other Freedom Fighters in whatever way he can.

While created for the television show, his first public appearance was in the US comic book series published by Archie Comics almost a year prior, debuting in issue #¼. In the comics, Antoine initially wasn't given much to do other than to be the butt of Sonic's jokes - he was made more relaxed when the TV series finally aired, but was perhaps the least useful of the core cast of characters.

As time went on the character's backstory was expanded in the comics, though his only named relative was his roboticized father, General D' Coolette. He was also later coupled with Bunnie Rabbot, ending his attempts to court Princess Sally. Antoine is also the only major character in the comic series to lose clothes as time went on, with his signature coat being dropped in later issues.

While always known as Antoine D' Coolette in the comics, his surname was seemingly changed for the TV show, becoming Antoine Depardieu. The "Depardieu" name is only mentioned once throughout the series, however - most characters refer to him as "Antoine", "Ant" or "Tony". There does not appear to have been a demand from Sega for Archie to change the character's name, as it had done with Rotor Walrus (originally known as "Boomer").

Voice actors

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Antoine is voiced by Rob Paulsen in the original English language version.
