"& Knuckles" is the third episode of the Sonic Mania Adventures web series, first airing on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel on May 31, 2018.
Synopsis
Knuckles the Echidna is the Guardian of the Master Emerald, but ever since Dr. Eggman and Sonic first appeared on Angel Island, trouble has followed. Knuckles still doesn’t fully trust Sonic, so he’s been watching over the Emerald constantly to ensure nobody – robot or hedgehog – gets their hands on it.
Now, just as Knuckles finds a safe location, a mysterious figure appears in the shadows…[1]
Episode summary
Deep within the jungle of Angel Island, Knuckles the Echidna finds a safe place to hide the Master Emerald, determined to keep anybody from finding it. A shadow zooms though the trees in the background, bringing the echidna on high alert and making him think whether it could be Dr. Eggman, the Heavy King, or even Sonic himself as he still doesn't fully trust the hedgehog. Shaking himself out of it, he clings to the Master Emerald and looks around, then tries to conceal the Emerald by pulling down palm tree leaves, only to then notice something flying above the treetops, making him angry.
Immediately after, rustling in the bushes are heard, and out of them pops Ray the Flying Squirrel, befuddling Knuckles. Ray rolls around Knuckles and the Master Emerald before popping up and greeting him by offering a hand shake. However, Knuckles pushes Ray's hand down out of suspicion. Giving Knuckles a nervous smile regardless, Ray shows a missing poster depicting Mighty the Armadillo to Knuckles, hoping the echidna has seen him, but unfortunately he hasn't. Knuckles suddenly notices, much to his shock, that Ray is looking at the Master Emerald with fascination in his eyes. Before the squirrel could even poke it, Knuckles grabs him and angrily hurls him back into the sky above the treetops.
After getting rid of Ray, Knuckles hears a twig crack followed by the sound of a revving engine. After getting into a defensive position and circling around the Master Emerald, Knuckles spots a trio of Rhinobots, which are the source of that noise. Knuckles cracks his namesake knuckles, and takes them all out in a wild display of power. After taking them out, Knuckles is shocked and frustrated to discover that the Master Emerald is no longer there. As he frantically looks around for the giant gem, he spots it in the sky, being towed away by the Tornado. Though he does not see the pilot, he sees "SONIC" on the side of the plane, making him believe that Sonic is the one trying to steal the Master Emerald, and so he angrily chases after the Tornado.
Elsewhere, a familiar robot detects the whereabouts of the last Chaos Emerald on its holographic radar and promptly takes off to locate it.
