'''''Sonic Advance 3''''' is the third game in the ''[[Sonic Advance]]'' series released for the [[Game Boy Advance]]. Unlike the first two games in the series, ''Sonic Advance 3'' features ability to play two characters in a partner setting. The [[Tiny Chao Garden]] mode from the previous Advance games has been removed and the Chao Playground has been put in it's place. The Chao Garden in this game serves to help the player view the [[Chaos Emeralds]] and Chao they have collected.

The game focuses on Robotnik's newest creation, [[Gemerl]], as he co-pilots all of Eggmans vehicles and is an extra final boss if the player collects all the [[Chaos Emeralds]] in the game. Gemerl's design and name are a direct reference to the robot [[Emerl]] whom was a main character in ''[[Sonic Battle]]''. Sega of Japans website actually mentions he was built from the scrap parts of Emerl.

This is the very last game to use the original Sonic voice actors before they were changed to the ''[[Sonic X]]'' cast. It also contains the last voice acting done by Deem Bristow before he passed away.

==Storyline==
Sometime before the events of the storyline, [[Dr. Eggman]] builds a robotic assistant based on and using parts from Emerl named Gemerl. Gemerl's designed to be a loyal, obedient copy of Emerl. As such, he can learn new attacks, and can meld himself seamlessly with any mechanical device.
Eggman tears the Earth apart when an experiment using [[Chaos Control]] goes awry, and Sonic is separated from Knuckles, Amy, and Cream and is stranded with Tails. The two begin to search for their friends and the source of the trouble (which is the separation of the [[Chaos Emerald]]s). But like always, Eggman is making everything from doomsday devices to strange contraptions and is trying to vanquish Sonic once and for all.

'''Alternate Ending''': (without all Chaos Emeralds)
After defeating the final boss, Eggman and Gemerl are defeated and try to escape, with Eggman swearing revenge. The heroes, chase him down to the edge of the temple, knocking Eggman to a deadly situation. Gemerl, stays and looks at the heroes as if to intimidate them, then jumps off the edge to follow his master. Peace is finally restored to the world. Then the game ends with all the playable characters getting their photo taken by Omochao. (The end credits also leave a message to players to collect any remaining Chaos Emeralds)

'''True Ending''': (with all 7 Chaos Emeralds)
After defeating the final boss, Eggman and Gemerl are defeated and try to escape, with Eggman swearing revenge. However, Gemerl stops running & attacks Sonic, causing the Chaos Emeralds Sonic has to scatter. Upon seeing the 7 Chaos Emeralds, the bad code that caused Emerl to malfunction activates, and Gemerl uses the Chaos Emeralds to transform into a rogue, orb-shaped robot. Gemerl then grabs Dr. Eggman and throws him at Sonic before escaping into outer space. Using the power of the Emeralds as well, Sonic becomes Super Sonic and, with the help of Dr. Eggman, Super Sonic destroys the improved Gemerl. Eventually, Tails finds Gemerl's broken body on a beach and repairs the robot. The game ends with the new Gemerl playing with Cream the Rabbit at her mother Vanilla's house.

==Game Play==
The gameplay of this game is like a combination of the platforming from the original ''[[Sonic Advance]]'' and the speed-oriented gameplay of ''[[Sonic Advance 2]]''. The game also incorporates elements from ''[[Knuckles' Chaotix]]'', with its 2 character team-ups and ring-dropping enemies, though the actual ring bands are gone. The 2 character team up is similar to previous Side-scrolling Sonic games as the second player actually follows the other character. This second player is controlled by the computer or player 2 in multiplayer mode. Partners can also be picked up by holding {{R}} and then released. This is another element first seen in ''Knuckles Chaotix''.

===Team type===
Each team has a specific "type", which more or less determines which type of gameplay the team is best at. There are 3 types:

* ''Speed'': any team that contains Sonic. These are generally very fast on the ground.
* ''Power'': any team that contains Knuckles but not Sonic. These are good at attacking foes, and breaking barriers to access areas other teams cannot.
* ''Flying'': any team with Tails or Cream but not Sonic or Knuckles. These are good at accessing higher places in the level.

Note that these are just general abilities; each team has their own strengths and weaknesses.

===Team Name===
When selecting certain combinations of characters it will usually display OK. However, selecting certain teams will actually display a Team name and this team will have exclusive abilities which can't be obtained by any other character team-ups. The Team names are below:
* ''Unbreakable Bond'': Sonic & Tails
* ''Fighting Buddies'': Sonic & Knuckles
* ''Lovely Couple'': Sonic & Amy
* ''Team Jubilee'': Amy and Cream

===Tag action===
By holding the {{R}} button, the partner will jump into the leader's hands. Upon releasing the {{R}} button, the partner will perform a ''tag action''. This action is different for each character, and sometimes whether you are on the ground or not. ''Tag actions'', along with other partner abilities, are enumerated below.

===Abilities with Sonic as a Partner===
''A free spirited hedgehog that hates evil. He can be short tempered at times, but never turns his back on those in need of help.''

Due to his speed, any team that contains Sonic is designated as a ''Speed'' team, and is generally good at getting around quickly.

===Abilities with Knuckles as a Partner===
''A powerful Echidna with spiky fists, and Sonic's best friend and rival. He's sincere in nature, but a little gullible and easily misled.''

Due to his strength, any team that contains Knuckles is designated as a ''Power'' team, which the exception of ''Sonic & Knuckles'' and ''Knuckles & Sonic''.
''Tag action'': On the ground, the leader will throw Knuckles forward in a Power attack; this can break some walls and will destroy badniks. In the air, Knuckles will begin to [[Power Glide|glide]], carrying you on his back. Be warned, if Knuckles hits a wall, he will latch on, but you will fall!

===Abilities with Cream as a Partner===
Cream is a polite little rabbit that takes her tiny Chao "Cheese" wherever she goes. She means well, but can act a little childish at times.

Any team with Cream has the ability to access high places in one way or another. If the team contains Cream, but not Sonic or Knuckles, it is designated as a ''Flying'' team.
''Tag action'': Cheese will change to resemble the leader, enabling the leader to use Cream's Chao Attack. While in the air, it will do the same, but will also give your jump height a slight boost.

===Abilities with Amy as a Partner===
''Sonic's self professed girlfriend that he can't seem to escape from. She never leaves home without her trademark Pikopiko Hammer.''

Amy has no outstanding characteristics, aside from her hammer, and has no bearing on what type designation a team is given.
''Tag action'': On the ground, Amy will use her hammer to propel you into the air. This is similar to Tails' tag action, only you are not given horizontal velocity at the start. While in the air, Amy will also use the hammer, however the vertical distance is not as strong as on the ground; however, your character is made to spin, so this move has its uses.

===Abilities with Eggman as a Partner===
Sonic and Dr. Eggman are forced to team up in the Extra Zone, [[Nonagression]], when Gemerl steals the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Any partner that Sonic uses to access the zone is automatically replaced by Eggman. Eggman does not affect the team type, which remains as Speed.

'''''Sonic Advance 2''''' is a platform game in the [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] series that was released for the [[Game Boy Advance]]. It is a side-scrolling platformer based on a modified version of ''[[Sonic Advance]]'''s engine. Compared to its predecessor, ''Sonic Advance 2'' contains larger levels and more of them. The overall difficulty is higher making it a more challenging game. The soundtrack is faster paced and the game offers better control over the playable characters. There are seven zones which contain two acts and a boss battle. Obtaining all of the [[Chaos Emerald]]s unlocks an Extra Zone - True Area 53, which consists of a boss fight as [[Super Sonic]]. Most levels start in a corner of a map and require to move uphill or downhill.

This game was the first to introduce [[Cream the Rabbit]] as a playable character. With her, not only can you fly faster than Tails, but Cream can summon [[Cheese the Chao]] to kill an enemy or hit a boss by pressing the {{B}} button. Before being revealed in this game she was revealed in the artwork gallery of ''[[Sonic Mega Collection]]''.

This is one of several GBA games to include the ''[[Tiny Chao Garden]]'' minigame. This game requires you complete the game with one character and all seven emeralds to unlock it.

==Storyline==
The game begins with Sonic running through the Leaf Forest Zone. There, he witnesses Dr. Eggman kidnapping a young rabbit and her pet chao. Chasing and defeating Dr. Eggman in his revamped Egghammer Tank II, he rescues the young rabbit and her chao, whose names are Cream and Cheese. Then pursuing Eggman, Sonic later finds him attempting to carry Tails off in the Music Plant with his Egg Totem. After defeating the mech and rescuing his friend, Tails remarks that Eggman came from nowhere and that he has no idea what he possibly could be up to. Sonic then continues his pursuit of Eggman, until the Sky Canyon Zone, where he intercepted by the Egg Saucer with Knuckles on board. After destroying the machine, Sonic confronts a rather emotional Knuckles, chiding him for allowing himself to be tricked by Eggman yet again. After this brief encounter, Sonic chases Eggman eventually reaching their final confrontation at XX zone.

'''Bad Ending''': After Sonic defeats Eggman, he drops from outer space, with the destroyed Egg Utopia falling behind him. When he lands, he is greeted by a number of his friends. After the credits roll, the player will be reminded to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds.

'''Good Ending''': This ending is obtained after Sonic obtains all 7 Chaos Emeralds, and Story Mode is cleared at least once with Tails, Knuckles, and Cream. A short time after the destruction of the Egg Utopia, Cream's mother, Vanilla, will be watching Flickies flying around the Leaf Forest when an odd, cloaked device vacuums her and the flickies up and carries her off. Upon seeing this, Sonic and co. come running, but are too late. As Cream begins to cry, Sonic will turn into Super Sonic and pursue the device to True Area 53. After this final showdown, Sonic and Vanilla will fall out of the sky. Sonic will catch her and land safely, much to Cream's relief. After this, the credits roll.

==Gameplay==
All characters can now perform various stunts when flying through the air and not curled in a ball (i.e. after being launched from a spring or similar). These are activated by being launched off of any spring, trampoline or ramp, then holding a direction on the D-pad and pressing the {{R}} button. Some of these stunts can be used to destroy enemies in the air while not spinning or to reach high-up places. In no level are these required, however it is recommended in [[Sky Canyon]].

Another new feature is Boost Mode. If a character runs as fast as possible for a period of time without stopping or slowing down, they will shatter the sound barrier and leave a trail of afterimages behind them. While moving this fast it is possible to run over water. If the {{B}} button attack is used at this time it will become more powerful. The delay before reaching shattering can be decreased by collecting rings. Certain objects in the level (red booster wheels, for instance) will instantly force the character into the state.

Accessing Special Stages, where players can win [[Chaos Emeralds]], is different in this game than in previous games. In each act, there are seven Special Rings. Collecting all seven of these and completing the Act, without dying, will take the player to a Special Stage. The stage accessed and emerald obtained both depend on which zone the player was in when they accessed the stage. Unlike ''Sonic Advance'', emeralds are not shared between characters.

All bosses in this game, except for the final boss, take place while running along a horizontally wrapping area, akin to the [[Mushroom Hill Zone Boss]] in ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]''. Rings will appear in groups of three. This format makes any attack other than jumping and Sonic's [[W Kaiten|insta-shield]] or Cream's ability to command Cheese to attack completely useless, and once the player has lost their rings it is difficult to regain them as they fly off the left side of the screen; both of these facts have led to the bosses being heavily criticized by fans. Spin-dashing, however, IS possible, but extremely difficult to do in real time: one must go to the right side of the screen, then suddenly brake, and very quickly stop braking, duck and Spin Dash before reaching the left side of the screen.

For unknown reasons, the idle actions were moved to a manual move called "Appeal". Players can view the character's idle animations by simply holding {{up}}. If the player does this while using Knuckles, his punches will destroy any enemies in front of him. Also due to the new appeal move the ability to look up and down to view the surroundings was removed.

===Special Moves===
As with the previous ''[[Sonic Advance]]'' all characters can attack using the {{B}} button. They can also perform special moves by using a combination of button presses. Some characters have been given new moves, the most interesting of which are Amy's spin attacks. The moves are listed below:

====Sonic====
*'''[[Insta-shield|Double Spin Attack]]''' (aka Insta-Shield): Performed by pressing jump again while in mid-air. It increases the range of attack, enabling you to attack things a little higher than you can normally reach and it increases the speed of your attack.
*'''[[Jump Dash]]''': Performed by pressing {{left}} or {{right}} twice in rapid succession after jumping. Sonic does a sudden jumping dash.
*'''[[Skid Attack]]''': Performed by pressing {{B}}. Sonic slides along the ground and stops.
*'''[[Super Skid]]''': Performed by pressing {{B}} in Boost Mode. Allows Sonic to use the Skid Attack that has a large flame-like aura around hit feet and continue running if at some of the lowest possible speeds in Boost Mode the flame-like aura around Sonic's feet will be smaller and he will lose more speed.
*'''[[Homing Attack]]''': Performed by pressing {{A}} while jumping near an enemy. Sonic targets the enemy and then destroys it with a Spin Attack with afterimages behind him as he does it. These can be done in succession but a Homing Attack will only work if the enemy is below Sonic.
*'''[[Bounce Attack|Bound]]''': Performed by pressing {{B}} while jumping. Sonic stops mid-flight and Spin Attacks straight downwards. This can be used to open pathways under Sonic.
*'''Rushing Attack''' (Super Sonic only): Press {{A}} or {{B}}. In a blaze of light, Super Sonic will speed up and attack in the direction he is facing (including diagonally).

====Cream====
[[File:Advance2BoostCream.PNG|right|thumb|240px|Cream in "[[Boost Mode]]", a high-speed state attainable by all characters, where they are pursued by their own afterimage.]]

*'''Chao Attack''': Simply press {{B}} to send Cheese the chao to focus in on nearby enemies.
*'''[[Step Attack]]''': Performed by pressing {{B}} in Boost Mode. Cream takes a long stride and "Cheese" circles around her as a shield. This destroys any enemies it comes into contact with.
*'''Flying''': Performed by pressing pressing {{A}} multiple times. Gain height by tapping {{A}}, then use D-pad to control what direction Cream is going. Pressing the {{B}} buttons makes Cream drop from where she is.
*'''Mid-Air Chao Attack''': Cream sends "Cheese" to attack enemies while in mid-air.
*'''Chao Rolling Attack''': Performed by pressing pressing {{down}} + {{B}} while jumping. "Cheese" spins around Cream as a shield from enemy attacks. This will destroy any enemies contacted.

====Tails====
*'''[[Tail Swipe]]''': Performed by pressing pressing {{B}}. Attack enemies with a swish of his tails.
*'''[[Super Tail Swipe]]''': Performed by pressing pressing {{B}} while in Boost Mode. Allows Tails to use Tail Swipe while keeping speed.
*'''Propeller Flying''': Performed by pressing pressing {{A}} multiple times. Gain height by tapping {{A}}, then use D-pad to control what direction Tails is going. You cannot stop him from flying until he lands on something. You can attack enemies while in the air if you hit them with his tails. Tails can fly in the air for 8 seconds.

====Knuckles====
*'''Spiral Attack''': Performed by pressing pressing {{B}} while in Boost Mode. Knuckles spirals forward with his fists while keeping speed. This is similar to the move Knuckles performs in ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'' when he punches while running.
*'''Drill Claw''': Performed by pressing pressing {{B}} while jumping. Just like the ''Sonic Adventure 2'' move of the same name, Knuckles spirals straight downwards with his fists.
*'''[[Power Glide|Mid-Air Glide]]''': Performed by pressing {{A}} again while in mid-air. Glide sideways while losing little height. Press {{right}} or {{left}} to change what direction the character is gliding. Enemies in the path will take damage on contact. If the {{A}} button is released Knuckles will fall. Knuckles cannot use Drill Claw while gliding.
*'''Wall Climb''': If a wall is in the path while gliding, Knuckles will cling to it. Push {{up}} or {{down}} to climb on it or just press {{A}} again to jump off it. When he gets to the edge of a ledge, Knuckles will pull himself up on it.

==== Amy ====
While available as a starting character in ''[[Sonic Advance]]'', Amy must be unlocked for this game. Players must clear the game with all four starting characters, and collect all of the Chaos Emeralds with each. Collecting the Chaos Emeralds with Amy is optional as it unlocks nothing.
*'''Head Slide''': Performed by pressing pressing {{B}} while in Boost Mode. Similar to the move of the same name from the first ''Sonic Advance'', except Amy can keep speed afterwards.
*'''Super Hammer Attack''': Performed by pressing pressing {{A}} while jumping. Amy swings the hammer once, and is able to make more a more precise descent afterwards. Amy does not need this move to attack as she can already use Spin Attack by default. However, it will extend her attack range.
*'''Mid-Air Hammer Swirl''': Press {{B}} and {{down}} while in the air. Swirl down toward the ground. If an enemy is hit Amy will bounce up again.
*'''Spin Dash''' (Listed under "Common Actions"): Amy may also use the Spin Dash in this game, but she runs in place in order to charge it. She still takes off rolling like the other characters.
===Trivia===
*This is one of the few games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series not to have a water-based level. In fact, the only stages with water in it are [[Leaf Forest]] and [[Ice Paradise]] but its only a small obstacle in these levels.
*Many find this to be the most difficult Sonic Advance game in the series, as the Special Rings are incredibly difficult to find, the wrong move can make reaching them impossible and the time limit often leaves gamers with barely enough time to find them, let alone get to the end of the stage afterwards.

'''''Sonic Advance''''' is the first Sonic game made for the [[Gameboy Advance]]. The game has four characters, [[Sonic the Hedgehog]], [[Miles Prower|Miles "Tails" Prower]], [[Knuckles the Echidna]], and, for the first time as a playable character in a classic-style 2D Sonic game, [[Amy Rose]]. Sonic can have Tails follow him, ''[[Sonic 2]]''-style, by entering a special code at the character select screen. All characters have separate save-games which record their individual progress.

Some of the game's music is remixed from previous [[Mega Drive]] games. The remixed music includes the Options (''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic 1]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Scrap Brain Zone]]), Player Data (''Sonic 1''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Star Light Zone]]), 2P select (''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic 2]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s 2P [[Emerald Hill Zone]]), invincibility (''Sonic 1''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s Invincibility), and the first two bosses in the [[X-Zone]] (''Sonic 1'' and ''Sonic 2''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s boss musics).

This is one of several games to include the ''[[Tiny Chao Garden]]'' minigame. It is unlocked by default in this game.

There is a mobile port created by Gameloft where you can only play as Sonic the Hedgehog and 3-4 Zones, depending on your device.

==Storyline==
The Story begins as Sonic goes to search for Eggman around the South Island, by collecting Chaos Emeralds. Sonic arrives in Angel Island and he sees a robotic lookalike of Knuckles named Metal Knuckles, and Eggman built the Egg Rocket which will go in outer space, so Sonic goes in and finds Eggman. Later he finds Eggman and chases him outside and defeats him.

'''Bad Ending''': After Sonic defeats Eggman, Sonic doesn't have enough chaos emeralds. He falls down to Earth and is caught by Tails in his Tornado.

'''Good Ending''': After Sonic defeats Eggman, he collects all the chaos emeralds and he turns into Super Sonic and chases Eggman onto the moon for his first time. After Super Sonic defeats Eggman and flies off the moon, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy wondered what happened to Sonic, so Tails goes to search for Sonic a few days later. He finds Super Sonic who came from the moon, as Tails waves to him.

==Gameplay==
The player must play through 6 normal zones, followed by the [[X-Zone]] and [[The Moon Zone]] if certain conditions are met. Each of the normal zones contains two acts. Act 1 is completed by passing a signpost and Act 2 is completed by defeating one of [[Dr. Eggman]]'s machines and opening the capsule that subsequently falls from the sky, releasing the captive animals. ''Sonic Advance'' was the last game in the Sonic series until ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 4|Sonic 4]]'' to use end-level signposts and capsules and Sonic's leg spin animation, and the first 2-D Sonic game that allows your character to grind on rails.

The special stages are accessible from Special Springs, which are placed near the top in certain acts. Each normal zone contains one Special Spring, except for [[Ice Mountain Zone]] which contains two: one in each act. [[Chaos Emerald]]s can be collected if one passes the stage. The chaos emeralds are "shared" between characters. Once the player has collected all the Emeralds and completed the X-Zone with all four characters, they can access the Moon Zone by completing the X-Zone again with Sonic.

===Controls===
Controls are similar to previous 2D Sonic installments, and platform games in general. For all four characters, the {{A}} button makes them jump. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all simultaneously [[spin attack]] when jumping as in previous games, however Amy does not, making her significantly more vulnerable in a number of circumstances in the game, effectively making her the most difficult to play as. While stationary, hold {{up}} to look above and {{down}} to look below. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles can [[spin dash]] by holding {{down}} and pressing {{A}}, another classic feature, and can roll if running and pressing {{down}}. Amy's behavior when these buttons are pressed is different, and is considered a special ability. Each character has their own unique abilities, which influence the game's overall difficulty.

Each character's abilities are modeled after their special moves in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. Sonic is the fastest character overall, Tails can fly and swim, Knuckles can [[Power Glide|glide]] and climb walls and Amy has her hammer. Each character's strengths and weaknesses particularly come into play when fighting bosses or trying to find access to the special stages.

All the characters can perform an attack by pressing the {{B}} button. These moves are most often less effective than a spin jump or a spin dash due to their short range. One of the characters can make combo attacks by pressing the button repeatedly. These and other special moves are explained below.

====Sonic====
*'''[[Insta-Shield|Double Spin Attack]]''' (also known as the ''W Kaiten Attack'' or ''Insta-Shield''): Press {{A}} after jumping and a flash shaped like lightning will cover Sonic for a split second, increasing his attack range and speed.
*'''[[Jump Dash]]''': Press {{left}} or {{right}} twice in rapid succession after jumping and Sonic will dash in midair, increasing his speed. Sonic is vulnerable in this state.
*'''[[Somersault]]''': Press {{B}} twice in rapid succession. With the first tap, Sonic rolls into a ball less tight than his usual spin attack. This only lasts a moment. Press {{B}} again while he is in this rolling state and Sonic will perform a somersault, which can damage enemies in front of him. Sonic does a couple of somersaults, does a flip, then slides along the ground and stops.
**'''[[Skid Attack]]''': Press {{B}} during a Somersault and Sonic will flip forward and skid along the ground for a moment, damaging enemies in his path.
**'''[[Backflip]]''': Press {{A}} during a Somersault and Sonic will jump into the air backwards in a light spin. Sonic is vulnerable in this state.
*'''Rushing Attack''' (Super Sonic only): Press {{B}} and Super Sonic will speed up and attack in a blaze of light.

====Tails====
*'''Fly''': Press {{A}} after jumping and Tails will begin fly. He will gain height by tapping {{A}} again repeatedly, using the D-pad to control what direction Tails is going. He will not stop flying until he lands on something. Tails can damage enemies while in midair if he hits them with his tails. Tails can fly for 8 seconds. When underwater, this move will cause Tails to '''Swim''', which is identical to flight except he cannot damage enemies. Like flying, Tails can only swim for 8 seconds, and can only stop by landing on something.
*'''Tail Attack''': Press {{B}} on the ground or in midair, while not flying or swimming, and Tails whips his tails around, damaging enemies immediately in front of him.

====Knuckles====
*'''[[Power Glide|Glide]]''': Press and hold {{A}} after jumping and Knuckles will glide sideways while slowly losing height. Press {{right}} or {{left}} and he will change his direction accordingly. Enemies in his path will take damage on contact with his fists. Release {{A}} and Knuckles will fall, being vulnerable until he lands on something. When underwater, Knuckles will '''Swim''', which is identical to gliding except he cannot damage enemies. Knuckles cannot gain height like Tails and he loses altitude at the same rate as gliding.
**'''Climb''': If Knuckles glides or swims into a wall, he will cling to it. Press {{up}} or {{down}} and he will climb or descend it. Press {{A}} and he will jump off. When he gets to the edge of a ledge, Knuckles will pull himself up onto it.
*'''Float''': If Knuckles lands in a body of water, he will rise to the surface and float, regardless of how deep he initially goes. Press {{right}} or {{left}} and he will change his direction accordingly. Press {{down}} and Knuckles will sink. Press {{A}} and he will jump.
*'''Punch Attack''': Press {{B}} on the ground and Knuckles will let go a right cross, damaging enemies in front of him. Press {{B}} again and he will punch a second time, but with his left hand.
**'''Uppercut''': Press {{B}} quickly after his second punch and Knuckles will perform an uppercut, damaging nearby enemies.

==== Amy ====
*'''Giant Steps''': Press {{down}} + {{A}} while on the ground and Amy will take a giant step forward as opposed to a [[spin dash]]. This can be repeated so long as there is room. This move is good for getting up steep slopes.
**'''Head Slide Attack''': Press {{B}} during a Giant Step and Amy will slide forward, damaging enemies in her path.
*'''Hammer Jump''': Press {{down}} + {{B}} while on the ground and Amy will smash her hammer into it, launching her into the air.
*'''Hammer Whirl''': Press {{down}} + {{B}} in midair and Amy will swirl down toward the ground. If an enemy is hit, she will bounce up.
*'''Hammer Attack''': Press {{B}} and Amy will swing her hammer, damaging enemies immediately in front of her. If on the ground, press {{B}} again quickly and she will swing it a second time, with farther reach.
**'''High Jump''': Press {{B}} such that the hammer hits a spring and Amy will be launched to great heights.

'''''Sonic Spinball''''' (ソニックスピンボール) is a pinball game (using Sonic as a ball) combined with the storyline of the ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog]]''. The games title is a pun on pinball and Sonic's famous spin move. It is the only official game to incorporate the characters and setting of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|SatAM]]'', and one of only two for ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' (the other being ''[[Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine]]'').

The plot revolves around the [[Veg-O-Fortress]], [[Dr. Eggman/Robotnik|Dr. Robotnik's]] new mass-roboticization facility built in and around the Mt. Mobius volcano. Sonic must use the fortress' special "Pinball Defense System" to his advantage, working his way up from the bottom of the volcano's interior by stealing the [[Chaos Emeralds]] that keep the volcano stable, destroying the doctor's boss guardians and, eventually, taking out the massive roboticizer itself, the [[Veg-O-Machine]]. The grand finale is at a launch hangar built around the volcano's crater, as Robotnik attempts to escape Mt. Mobius in a rocketship before it erupts.

The game is unique as it was coded entirely in the C programming language when the norm was assembly.[http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=83&title=Interview:%20Peter%20Morawiec]

==Storyline==
[[Dr.Robotnik|Dr. Robotnik]] has assumed control of Mt. Mobius and turned it into a mechanical base. Utilizing energy produced by the [[magma]] flowing under the [[volcano]], this new monstrosity (the Veg-O-Fortress) has the power to transform helpless animals into [[robot]] [[slavery|slaves]] at an astounding rate. [[Sonic the Hedgehog (character)|Sonic the Hedgehog]] and [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]] fly onto the scene to mount an aerial assault, but Sonic is knocked off the wings of Tails' airplane by a blast from the fortress. He falls into the water, but is rescued and taken to the subterranean levels of the Veg-O-Fortress. The fortress must be destroyed from the inside-out, and the only way to make that happen is to trigger an eruption in the volcano it's built on. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the [[Chaos Emeralds]] that keep the volcano stable. Robotnik, however, is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the Emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

==Gameplay==
''Sonic Spinball'' is basically a continuation of the pinball themed levels first seen in [[Spring Yard Zone]] and [[Casino Night Zone]] from the first Sonic games. As with those games you have some control of Sonic while he is being knocked around the pinball themed levels. The D-pad will move him while in ball form and the {{A}}, {{B}}, and {{C}} buttons will cause the flippers to flick. If he happens to land on a flat surface you can move in a similar fashion to the Sonic games and be able to jump and perform the Spin Dash. This does not happen often as there are few platforms to land so platforming is kept to a bare minimum.

The objective of the game is to collect the [[Chaos Emerald]]s which are hidden in each level and defeating the levels boss. To do this obstacles must be cleared and levers must be switched. Rings are scattered around the level but do not grant free lives or extra protection from hits (enemies never attack and you are always in ball form when encountering them anyway). However, if all the rings in the level are collected it will open up the opportunity to visit a hidden multi-ball Bonus Stage known as Cluckers Defense.

Unlike traditional Sonic games, you can actually ''fall outside of the boss arena''. The bosses take a lot more hits than normal Sonic bosses, but to compensate it's easy to hit them multiple times in a row.

==Versions==
There are two versions that were released in the US, each with differences in music. The European and Japanese versions are based on the final US version but with a few different music arrangements and bug fixes. '''''Knuckles' Chaotix''''' (カオティクス) is a "Sonic"-related game for the ill-fated [[Sega 32X|32X]] expansion to the [[Sega Genesis|Mega Drive/Genesis]]. It features [[Vector the Crocodile]], [[Charmy Bee]], [[Espio the Chameleon]] and [[Mighty the Armadillo]], along with [[Knuckles the Echidna]], [[Dr. Eggman]], and [[Metal Sonic]] to provide a link to the Sonic universe. Other characters include [[Heavy and Bomb|Bomb the Mechanic]] and [[Heavy and Bomb|Heavy the Mechanic]], who are booby prize characters in the character select screen. The game doesn't feature [[Sonic]] or [[Tails]] (except in the best ending with both in the Tornado), although evidence suggests they were meant to be playable characters at one point (see [[Sonic Crackers]] and [[Knuckles' Chaotix Prototype 1207]]).

Some elements of the game have been re-used in later games with Espio, Vector, and Charmy returning to the series in 2004's ''[[Sonic Heroes]]''. Also, the concept of a player controlling two characters is reused for ''[[Sonic Advance 3]]''.

Due to the game being much longer than most Sonic games at the time, the game was given a battery-backup save feature which allowed the player to save their progress either manually (by going past the exit sign) or automatically (your progress is immediately saved after you beat an act/special stage).

On a side note, all of the badniks and almost all of the bosses in the game use gray, power sapped rings to function rather than animals. However, the rings cannot be collected like regular rings, as they dissolve not long after falling out of their badnik/boss machine. This concept was later used for [[Tails Adventure]]'s and ''Sonic Advance 3'''s robots, but the rings appear to be fine when released and can be collected like any other ring.

==Storyline==
According to the Japanese manual, the story was completely different compared to the western release. In the manual for the western release, Knuckles guards Carnival Island, a large hi-tech amusement park. Dr. Robotnik goes there to steal the power emerald that powers the whole island so he can use it to power his evil devices. Dr. Robotnik traps Vector the Crocodile, Charmy Bee, and Mighty the Armadillo, who were visiting the island, in the Combi Confiner (a machine Robotnik built that freezes them in time) and is about to do the same to Espio the Chameleon until Knuckles chases him away. [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]] then discovers that he can rescue one friend at a time using ring power, which holds the two partners together like a rubber band. All the characters (plus Heavy the Robot and Bomb the Bomb) then work together to save Carnival Island from Robotnik.

In the Japanese manual, a mysterious island rose from the sea shortly after the events of ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]''. [[Doctor Robotnik|Dr. Robotnik]] discovered the island, and found a mysterious ring inscribed with descriptions of the Chaos Rings, ancient [[Sonic the Hedgehog series#Rings|Rings]] infused with [[Chaos Emeralds|Chaos Emerald]] energy. In order to find these Rings, Robotnik built his base, the Newtrogic High Zone, on the island. Mighty the Armadillo, Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy Bee also arrived at the island, and ended up being captured by Robotnik and [[Metal Sonic]], and placed in Robotnik's Combi Catcher machine. Knuckles, curious about the strange island, goes there as well, and manages to rescue Espio. The two then go on to stop Robotnik from getting the Chaos Rings.

==Gameplay==
The primary objective of the game remains unchanged from previous Sonic titles. The player must finish each level in under ten minutes and defeat Dr. Robotnik's badniks along the way. Rings still constitute the player's life energy and can be collected to enter special stages. Extra lives are unobtainable in the game — once the player is damaged when he has no rings and his partner is absent (if you have no rings, getting hit will temporarily cause you to lose your partner, but he will return eventually) or if you use 'recall' to reduce your ring counter to negative 99 rings or lower, you will automatically be taken back to the world lobby (or back to the title screen, if you are in [[Isolated Island]]) and be given a chance to leave/save or to choose a different partner and/or try to choose another attraction to play.

The main game is divided into five worlds (called "attractions" in the game), each one consisting of five different stages. The stages are set in different times of day (morning, day, evening, night). The time of day is determined by how long you stay in the previous stage (if there was no change, then next time there will definitely be a change). The time of day effects enemy placements and boss difficulty. At the end of Level 5, the player confronts Dr. Robotnik in one of his contraptions.

The most fundamental change in Knuckles' Chaotix is the special ring force bond between characters. In earlier Sonic games, two-player mode would consist either of a traditional split screen race or a joint single player effort with Tails as a secondary character. In the latter case, this meant that Tails could move off screen and get lost for a few seconds until he returned to Sonic.

In Chaotix, however, both players are at all times connected on one single screen while neither player acts as the dominant force to move the game forward. Besides the staple of traditional Sonic moves and individual abilities this means some new tricks can be executed with the elastic force of the ring bond. For example, player 1 can hold his position while player 2 (or the AI, if in single-player mode) runs forward and stretches the bond to gain maximum speed. In mid-air the bond can be used to generate an upward momentum. Additionally, players can toss each other toward platforms or use the 'recall' button to reunite (at a cost of ten rings, even going into a negative count if necessary).

Consequently, damage is a bit more complicated. If an AI character is hit, only one ring is lost; if a human player's character is hit, behavior depends on whether or not he has picked up a Combine Ring (blue ring monitor). If the player has a Combine Ring, the lost rings will come out as one big ring, giving him ten seconds to get that ring and reclaim all your rings before it breaks apart. If he doesn't have it, then he loses all his rings.

===Items===
''Knuckles' Chaotix'' saw one of the most expansive item repertoires in Sonic history, as well as the most one-game items in the series' history.
* ''Super Ring'' - Gives 10 rings instantly.
* ''Shield'' - Supplies the player with a barrier, protecting him from one hit without ring loss.
* ''Invincible'' - Makes the player and partner invincible for 20 seconds.
* ''Combine Ring'' - Fuses the player's rings together as they are collected until he is hit. Upon taking damage, the player will release one ring equivalent to all rings lost. If the ring is not collected in a short time, it explodes into individual rings.
* ''Swap'' - Transforms the player into the partner, and the partner into the player, for 20 seconds.
* ''Change'' - Transforms the partner into the player shown on the monitor for 20 seconds. The item is best used in a two-player game, and the player who does NOT want to transform must open the monitor.
* ''Grow'' - Doubles the player in size, thus increasing his weight eightfold and jump height fourfold, for 20 seconds.
* ''Shrink'' - Halves the player in size, thus decreasing his weight eightfold and jump height fourfold, for 20 seconds.

==Trivia==
* Interesting secrets in the game include a "lost character" [[Wechnia]], and the [[Amy]] fragment discovered by [[ICEknight]]. [[Esrael]] later found a way to make Amy appear in the game's sound test menu.
* A Brazilian release of Knuckles Chaotix was found a little later on after the game was released.
* Several early [[Knuckles' Chaotix Prereleases|prototypes]] (such as [[Knuckles' Chaotix (prototype 1227)|1227]]) refer to the game as ''Knuckles' Ring Star.''

'''''Sonic the Hedgehog 4''''' is a [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] episodic game with its first episode released on October 7th, 11th, 12th, and 13th in the US regions, October 7th, 13th, and 15th in the EU region, and October 12, 13th in the JP region. It was originally codenamed ''Project Needlemouse'', after [[Mr. Needlemouse]], the name given to several early prototypes of Sonic.

Episode I was first announced on the GameSpot website on September 9th, 2009, the 10th anniversary of the [[sega:Sega Dreamcast|Sega Dreamcast]]. The game is a 2D, download-only title on [[sega:Xbox Live Arcade|Xbox Live Arcade]], [[sega:Sony PlayStation 3|PlayStation Network]], [[sega:Nintendo Wii|WiiWare]], and Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch; and features HD graphics on the former two platforms. It is a direct sequel to ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]'' and is set after the events of that game. It is being released in episodic format, with its storyline spread across several episodes. [[Takashi Iizuka]], who was involved in level design in ''[[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]]'', is involved with the development, while [[Jun Senoue]] is the game's Sound Director.

On March 22, NGamer revealed that the game will have 3 Episodes, each comprising 4 Zones. [http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/ngamer-magazine-preview-confirms-game-length-special-stage] Each Zone has 4 Acts, the last of which is a boss battle with Sonic's perpetual nemesis [[Dr. Eggman]].

Episode II has been announced, but not much else is known. Sega has rumored that [[Tails]] will be in, due to a tidbit relating to a poem called "The Hedgehog and the Fox", which would refer to both Sonic and Tails. [[Metal Sonic]] will be in Episode II, as shown in the secret ending of the game. It was announced later in an interview that Episode 2 would be releasing sometime in 2012.

==Plot==
''Sonic the Hedgehog 4'' is set shortly after the events of ''[[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]]'' and takes place before the events of "[[Sonic Adventure]]". After [[Sonic the Hedgehog (character)|Sonic]] manages to destroy [[Dr. Robotnik|Doctor Eggman's]] space station, he decides it is time to take a much deserved break. After parting with his companions [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]] and [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]], Sonic sets off to explore new territories alone.

However, unbeknownst to him, his nemesis, Dr. Eggman, has survived their last encounter, and has revisited and improved some of his very best robotic creations in another attempt to defeat Sonic. Sonic must travel through a variety of zones to defeat Dr. Eggman once again.

;Episode I
The first episode sees Sonic travelling through four main zones: Splash Hill, Casino Street, Lost Labyrinth and Mad Gear, facing against Dr. Eggman as he reuses and enhances some of his old creations and contraptions, culminating in a battle in his E.G.G. Station. If the game is finished with all seven Chaos Emeralds collected, a post-credits cutscene is shown, teasing the appearance of [[Metal Sonic]] in the next episode.

;Episode II
Episode II, which is currently in development, will primarily focus on Sonic's rivalry with Metal Sonic, following on from their last encounter during the events of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog CD|Sonic CD]]''.

==Gameplay==
The game intends to replicate the feel of 16-bit era Sonic games with elements such as side scrolling levels and classic-style badniks. Sonic is the only playable character. Each zone features 3 acts, similar to ''[[Sonic 1]]'''s design, along with a boss act. The [[Homing Attack]] and [[Spin Dash]] are present. [[Monitors]] return in this game, and power-ups attainable from them include the [[Speed Shoes]], [[Shield]], and [[Invincibility]]. [[Special Stage (Sonic the Hedgehog 4)|Special Stages]] are present and take place in [[Special Stage (Sonic the Hedgehog 16-bit)|Sonic 1-esque]] levels which must be navigated by tilting the level with either the D-Pad or through motion controls on supported systems. If all 7 [[Chaos Emeralds]] are collected in the Special Stage and 50 or more rings are collected the player will be able to transform into [[Super Sonic]], a feature which has not been implemented in regular levels in an action Sonic game since ''Sonic 3 and Knuckles''. The transformation is activated by pressing a button that is not Jump, making transforming into Super Sonic less likely to be accidental. In the Wii version, it's simply the {{1}} button, while on the 360 it is the {{X}}/{{Y}} buttons.

==Platform Differences==
In order to fit within WiiWare size limits, music in the Wii version uses a sequenced format similar to MIDI or module formats. As a result, there are noticeable differences from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, which use recorded music. As the Wii is not capable of producing high definition graphics the screen resolution is also smaller.

The iOS version contains some differences found in the [[Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (PartnerNET build)|PartnerNET build]], and retains some changes found in that build, including the rotating minecart stage in [[Lost Labyrinth Zone]] and the Score Attack section in [[Casino Street Zone]]. The camera rotates when running through loops in this version also.

Only the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions support custom soundtracks.

==Criticism==
''Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1'' has been criticized for its "floaty" physics, likely due to its use of the ''[[Sonic Rush]]'' engine. This can often result in various oddities such as Sonic being able to stand sideways on walls. Following negative reception from older builds, it was confirmed that the physics would be tuned up for the final release, however it has been stated that dramatic changes in the way the game plays would require extensive level-redesign, which was not possible in the time limit set until the game's release.

The music has also been criticized for its poor choice of synthesized instruments, as well as low-quality DAC recordings from [[Sonic 2]] that vary little between songs. [[Jun Senoue]] said that he looked into using a [[Mega Drive]] soundfont, but could not find a NEC PC-88 (a popular 80s Japanese computer with similar sound hardware) to run the software on.

Another controversial issue is Sonic's design, which uses the modern style model that debuted in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' and has since received refinements until its most recent state in ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''. Many fans say that the classic Sonic design should have been used, and a [http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/bring-the-classic-sonic-to-sonic-the-hedgehog-4.html petition] was set up for SEGA to include a classic model. However, in a magazine [[Takashi Iizuka]] said that the classic style wasn't returning, as all games since ''Sonic Adventure'' have featured Sonic in his modern design. However, this was proven false with the upcoming PS3/360/3DS game ''[[Sonic Generations]]'', where the Classic style of Sonic was used again along side his Modern counterpart. It is unknown whether this occurrence will be strictly for this new title, or if he will be used in future games.
