'''Casinopolis''' is a Casino-themed Action Stage in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. It is modeled heavily after [[Sonic 2]]'s [[Casino Night Zone]] with a similar color scheme. It contains typical casino gimmicks such as a solid gold Sonic statue and a life-size pirate ship mockup. The main casino area is circular with a dome roof.

The zone is located in [[Station Square]], in the area accessible from the hotel and station. Opening Casinopolis' entrance is achieved by pressing the large button above the door. Sonic achieves this by pressing a button to activate a line of rings to the button and performing a [[Light-Speed Dash]] along them. Tails simply flies up to the button. Knuckles climbs up a nearby wall and glides to the button. The images of the characters on the slots use the character designs from past games.

==Sonic's Level==
The aim of Sonic's level is to reach a platform in the Ring Vault. This platform is high enough that Sonic cannot reach it by normal means, and it's blocked off by an invisible barrier until the vault has 400 rings anyway. By stepping on a button in the vault, a mechanical grabber will grab Sonic and shake out all his collected [[rings]] onto the vault floor, eventually rising high enough to provide a step up to the platform. 400 rings are required to reach the platform. Additional rings can be collected and deposited, which will be used to help create a Sonic statue in the center of the stage lobby.

Collecting Rings is done in a number of ways:
* The '''Sonic pinball table''' awards the player with a ring whenever a target is hit, and with a number of rings for completing target combinations. There is a sub-area where it is possible to control Sonic over a rotating bridge and into some [[ring monitor|ring monitors]], though this can be difficult and wastes time. There is also a slot machine target which activates slots that are stopped one-by-one by pressing {{a}}. Getting a line of a certain character or item horizontally or diagonally gains (or loses, in the case of [[Eggman]]) rings, disables the slot machine for a set period, and typically activates a block to avoid losing a ball for the same amount of time. In addition, triggering these combinations usually sets a challenge during that time to get the ball to pass through a part of the table or hit certain obstacles on the table, which upon completion will give an additional ring bonus.
* The '''NiGHTS pinball table''' satisfies the [[NiGHTS]] cameo cliché in newer Sonic games. On the pinball table are cards in the design of NiGHTS characters which the player collects by hitting them. Once collected, the card is shortly replaced by a different one. After collecting five cards, the game distributes rings if 2, 3, 4 or 5 of the same card (or a Full House or similar Poker hands) have been collected. A 'higher' area of the table, called the ''Nightmare table'', can also be played. This table is in a mostly-open setting with many cards. However, it is very easy to waste time on the table, with a long NiGHTS flying sequences the player must endure when traveling from the Nightmare table, and another to grab an Ideya. A short NiGHTOPIA sequence plays if the ball lands in the gutter in the Reala room, whereupon any collected Ideya will be deposited. Collecting all the Ideya will give the player a bonus of 300 rings.
[[Image:SADX_Dilapidated_Way.jpg|thumb|right|Tails racing Sonic in Dilapidated Way.]]
* If the player loses all three balls on either pinball table while having less than 100 Rings, they are deposited in a new area called '''Dilapidated Way'''. This area is a sewer filled with spinner enemies and spiked balls. This can actually be the quickest way to collect rings, as it is possible to pass through around 35 [[Ring monitor|10-ring monitors]] and collect 350 rings on a single run through the area. However, it is also very easy to lose all rings collected due to the many traps.
* Striking the coin gambling machines on the outer edge of the main casino makes them deposit a small number of rings in a circle. Depending on the number of times these machines are struck, they will yield first seven rings, then three rings, then one ring. These rings behave as rings do after the player is attacked by an enemy, and disappear after a short time. After three hits, the coin gambling machines yield no more rings.
* Each shower in the shower area (where the player re-enters the Casino from Dilapidated Way) contains one ring.

[[File:SA1 CasinopolisShower.PNG|thumb|right|Sonic taking a well deserved bath.]]
==Tails' Level==
Tails' level is a race against Sonic through '''Dilapidated Way'''. The multiple routes through the level cause the progress icons at the bottom of the screen to often jump back and forth, making it hard to know who is ahead.

==Knuckles' Level==
Knuckles' aim is to collect three [[Master_Emerald#Sonic_Adventure|Master Emerald]] fragments in an extended Casino area. All the areas in Sonic's Casino area are available, and springs dotted around the area launch Knuckles into an upper level, which contains a moving lion sculpture, a pirate ship montage, and access to an inner-workings area above the entrance to the vault. Spinners are common in Knuckles' level, with a swarm of them in the entrance to the vault and one in each shower. The Sonic statue in the center of the level can be smashed by punching a red-glowing crack in its foot. This can sometimes reveal an Emerald fragment hidden in the statue.

==Enemies==
* [[E-06 Bladed Spina]] (Knuckles, Tails, Sonic)
* [[E-16 Thunder Spina]] (Knuckles)
* [[Pirate (enemy)|Pirates]] (Knuckles)

==Trivia==
* There is a vent on the right wall in the beginning of Dilapidated Way, assumedly where Sonic and Tails entered the area. However, they enter the area from the ceiling with no hole from where they came out, and Tails cannot enter the vent.
'''Dr. Eggman''', also known as '''Dr. Ivo Robotnik''', is the main antagonist of the [[Games featuring Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic the Hedgehog]] series of games and related media. Introduced along with the title character in 1991, he has been featured in nearly every [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] title since.

==Character Conception==
[[Image:S1concept-eggman.jpg|thumb|190px|The earliest known drawing of Dr. Eggman.]]
[[File:06 OBJECTION!.jpg|thumb|190px|Eggman's realistic design in ''Sonic '06''.]]
At the dawn of the 16-bit gaming war, [[Sega]] had resolved that they would do whatever they could to topple the gaming giant [[Nintendo]], and sought to create a franchise that would rival the [[Mario|Super Mario Bros]]. games. While it was [[Naoto Ohshima]]'s design of [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] that won the internal competition for corporate mascot, it was only one of many designs he had come up with for Sega. One of the other designs that had been considered in the final deliberations, but was ultimately passed up on, was a roundish, moustached man in pajamas. Bearing a striking resemblance to another of America's presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, Ohshima didn't want to discard the design outright. Sega's AM8 division (which would eventually christen itself "[[Sonic Team]]") also loved the design, and decided to still use it within the game itself, albeit as the villain. While [http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Sonic_Gems_300.jpg concept art] for the game shows Eggman originally as one of many enemies, as they progressed through making the game the team decided to drop the other characters and focus on the Sonic and Eggman dynamic, making Dr. Eggman the primary antagonist of the game, and subsequently the sequels that were to follow.

Dr. Eggman's finalized design was an extremely simplified version of his earliest sketch, loosing the bulky look of his pajamas and gaining a more primary color scheme of red, black and yellow. This was done in an effort to differentiate the two characters in the game, and place emphasis on the subtle nature/technology dynamic the two represented. His simple design was also done so that young children would be able to draw him easily.[http://web.archive.org/web/19970605172353/www.sega.com/features/allsonic/creator/naka04.html]

When the Sonic characters were revisited for production on ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'', Dr. Eggman was originally meant to look more or less the same as he did in the classic games, receiving small alterations as Sonic, [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]], and [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]] would. However, [[Yuji Uekawa]] ultimately decided to drastically redesign the character. While maintaining the red and black color scheme, his wardrobe was completely changed, and his egg-shaped body became slightly less pronounced, giving him a more realistic proportion. This was taken a step further in ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (2006 game)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2006]]'' when he was redesigned once more to match the realistic humans in the game. However, this even more extreme redesign was only used once, the Sonic Adventure design returning in later console releases such as ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''.

===Origin of Dr. Eggman===
[[Image:Classic eggman orthographic.svg|thumb|190px|The classic Dr. Eggman design, as used from 1991 to 1997.]]
The grandson of [[Professor Gerald Robotnik]], Dr. Eggman was born Ivo Robotnik. While much of his past is unknown, it is known that in his early years Eggman looked up to his grandfather, hoping to one day be as great a scientist as he was. However, since Eggman's age is unknown, it can not be stated if he looked up to him because he knew his grandfather before he went crazy, or only by stories that he heard. Likewise, whether Eggman ever knew his deceased cousin [[Maria]] is uncertain.

It was later on in life that Dr. Robotnik would meet his long-time rival and arch-nemesis [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]. It is unknown how long they knew each other before the events chronicled in Sonic the Hedgehog, but it is known that it was these occasions where Dr. Robotnik gained the nickname "Eggman" from Sonic. Instead of being angry, Robotnik decided to adopt the nickname as his own, calling himself "Dr. Eggman" and pasting the name on everything belonging to him, such as the [[Wing Fortress Zone|Wing Fortress]] he used in ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2]]''. Embracing his Eggman persona, he tires endlessly to achieve his ultimate goal - the establishment of the Eggman Empire.

===Personality and Traits===
[[Image:CS E US.png|thumb|190px|Dr. Eggman's profile from ''[[Sonic Jam]]''.]]
[[Image:SA Eggman Original.jpg|thumb|190px|The original unveiling of Dr. Eggman's redesign. From ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''.]]
Dr. Eggman is a male human, whose age is currently unknown. With a recorded IQ of 300 (though it may possibly be greater), he is one of the most intelligent beings on the planet Earth, as proven by his mastery in robotics and its related fields. Why he could be anything, Dr. Eggman has set his sights on the highest prize of them all - global domination. Dreaming of the day he will be able to erect [[Eggmanland]], Eggman tires endlessly at accomplishing this, though his plans are foiled time and again by his arch-nemesis, [[Sonic the Hedgehog]].

Although he wants to rule the world, his desires are not for total destruction but instead to have the world focus on him and his image. This desire for recognition is not necessarily evil, but the ways he has gone about it can only be interpreted as such. Even with his IQ, he often acts childish, his need for attention and the desire to get his way paving the way for such behavior. Even so, Eggman is more than just a man with a dream, being described as a "romanticist, feminist, and self-professed gentleman."[http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Heroes_gc_us_manual_16_17.jpg] But above all, he is someone who does not give up easily, no matter how many setbacks he runs into or how many times Sonic and friends stop him.

Because of his obsession with ruling the world, it only makes sense that he would be obsessed with the seven items that could allow that to happen - the [[Chaos Emeralds]]. Ever since he learned that they were more than just legend, Eggman has tried endlessly to access the [[Special Stage|special stages]] they are often hiding in and claim them for himself. Although there have been times when he has been close to getting them all, never once has he succeeded in beating Sonic, making the Eggman Empire still nothing more than his vision of the future.

Although Eggman rarely goes up against Sonic without his [[Eggpod|Eggmobile]], the times he is outside of it has shown just how athletic he is. Though his physical appearance would suggest otherwise, Eggman is capable of sprinting at immense speeds, able to even outrun Sonic for a few seconds (whether this means that he is slightly faster than Sonic or if it is because he always runs away after Sonic has traversed an entire [[Scrap Brain Zone (8-bit)|base]] or one of his machines is uncertain) - long enough for him to run into his latest weapon. Aside from this, his physical abilities are limited to those of normal humans, though he has an extreme streak of luck for the fact that he's been able to survive time and again the destruction of his bases, air ships, and Eggmobiles.

Dr. Eggman, in his quest to take over the world, has also looked for allies outside of his own making. These allies are often creatures who existed in the distant past, sealed away because of their powers and the havoc they could cause. Since ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'', Eggman has awoken and tried to control the likes of [[Perfect Chaos]], [[Biolizard]], [[Solaris]], and [[Dark Gaia]], every time the arrangement blowing up in his face. While anyone else would have learned to avoid such actions the first time around, Eggman's determination gives the impression he will continue looking toward ancient legends of otherworldly creatures as a tool to succeed.

It must be noted that while Eggman has tried time and again to defeat Sonic, often in acts that could potentially kill him, the doctor does not necessarily hate the hedgehog, almost looking fondly at their rivalry. This doesn't mean that Eggman enjoys losing; it merely hints that he might not know what to do with himself if he succeeded in taking over the world.

===Mechanical Creations===
[[Image:CS E 03.png|thumb|190px|[[Eggpod|Eggman's Mobile]].]]
Being the robotics genius that he is, Dr. Eggman is not only defined by his personality but by his many creations. Perhaps the most widely recognizable of these would be his [[Eggpod|Eggmobile]]. Also known as simply "Eggman's Mobile," this hovercraft has been seen in nearly every [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] game, piloted by the elusive doctor. The mobile is often used as the center for the many boss encounters that occur in the Sonic games, with wildly different attachments used in an effort to defeat Sonic, [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]], and the rest. When inevitably defeated, Eggman uses the same pod to make a hasty getaway, preparing for the next encounter he'll have with his rival.

When not fighting against Sonic himself, Dr. Eggman has developed numerous [[Eggman's robots|robot enemies]] to do the fighting for him, used to defend his bases, attempt to rule areas of the planet, search for the [[Chaos Emeralds]], and of course to attack Sonic the Hedgehog. The earliest of his robot army, sometimes called [[badniks]], had designs based on real animals, each with Eggman's own twist. Most of these early enemies were powered by the [[animals]] that resided where Eggman's latest base was, though some robots were powered by alternate sources. The enemies on the [[Little Planet]], for example, were powered by flowers, and those found the game ''[[Knuckles' Chaotix|Chaotix]]'' were powered by grey versions of the most common Sonic item of all, [[Ring|rings]]. While modern members of Eggman's army have been built to function without any such power source, he still uses animals from time to time.

The [[Sky Sanctuary Zone|Sky Sanctuary]] of ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]'' was the first place where [[Eggrobo]], an enemy built in the image of Dr. Eggman himself, was introduced. While still part of his standard robot army, Eggrobo was designed to be the strongest of the fleet, with speed and power comparable to his most famous creation, [[Metal Sonic]]. While they were unable to stop Sonic, they were used as the inspiration for Eggman's future robot enemies, which eventually phased out the unique animal-based fleet he had been using up to this point. The first line of robots based from this mold, the [[E-Series Robots|E-100 series]], were introduced in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. Armed with advanced weaponry, they were meant to carry out missions his other creations were unable to, but the most successful of these, [[E-102 Gamma]], turned on his master and destroyed his early brethren. The final of the line, [[E-123 Omega]], was also given a staring role in ''[[Sonic Heroes]]'', but only seven of the implied twenty-four have been featured in the games. Sonic Heroes also saw the introduction of the [[Egg Pawns]], based on the Eggrobo design but meant to fill the role of the early robots that had by now been phased out.

As mentioned before, though Eggman has had many robots and other creations at his disposal, his most famous would have to be Metal Sonic. Designed to be the hedgehog's equal, Metal is one of Eggman's most advanced robots, and subsequently been used more than once to stop Sonic the Hedgehog, although Metal Sonic has never been able to stop his living counterpart. There have also been other such creations based on Eggman's other foes, such as [[Metal Knuckles]] and [[Tails Doll]], and even less advanced robots like the Mecha series - [[Mecha Sonic]] and [[Mecha Knuckles]] - but none have been used with such fervor as Metal Sonic. Also, while not part of either the Metal or Mecha series, Eggman did create a fleet of robots based on [[Shadow the Hedgehog]], first unveiled in ''Sonic Heroes'' but featured in the ''[[Shadow the Hedgehog (game)|Shadow the Hedgehog]]'' game. As one final note, the enemy robot that may be his inspiration for Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic, and the rest is [[Roller|Arma]] (also known as Roller), an Armadillo-based enemy who shares Sonic's hue and his spin ability. Though extremely primitive compared to his later outings, it can be considered Eggman's first attempt at creating a robotic duplicate of his adversary.

On top of all of this, Eggman has also had numerous flying fortresses and bases that he's used during the course of the games. Among his bases are [[Scrap Brain Zone|Scrap Brain]] from the first ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'', [[Metropolis Zone|Metropolis]] from ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic 2]]'', [[Launch Base Zone|Launch Base]] of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 3|Sonic 3]]'', [[Final Egg]] from ''Sonic Adventure'', and the [[Hidden Base|Pyramid Base]] of ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]''. While the most famous of his flying fortresses is the [[Death Egg]] featured in ''Sonic 2'', ''3'', and ''Sonic & Knuckles'', he has built others including the [[Wing Fortress Zone|Wing Fortress]] from ''Sonic 2'', [[Flying Battery Zone|Flying Battery]] used in ''[[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]]'', and the [[Egg Carrier]] featured in ''Sonic Adventure'' and ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)]]''. It must also be noted that he briefly was able to create a portion of his fabled dream land, [[Eggmanland]], during the events of ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]'', but it was swiftly destroyed as many of his other bases and creations have in the past.

==Eggman in Other Media==
As has been the case with [[Sonic the Hedgehog]], Dr. Eggman's origin has been changed countless times when adapted into other media, with varying degrees of success.

===Westernized Game Localization===
[[Image:STHPromoSTHPromo06.jpg|thumb|190px|[[Dr. Ovi Kintobor]] accidentally transforms into the evil Dr. Robotnik. From the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic)|promotional comic]].]]
While the original Japanese storyline chose to make Eggman's background simple, the Westernized story spearheaded by [[Sega of America]] decided to make the villain of the Sonic series and evil mastermind not of his own choosing, but by a cruel twist of fate. As depicted in the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic)|promotional comic]] written by [[Francis Mao]], the character who would be known as Dr. Robotnik was once known as [[Dr. Ovi Kintobor]], a kind and friendly scientist who worked in secret in his underground laboratory. Working in secret on the [[R.O.C.C.|Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor]], a device meant to absorb all the evil in the world, he was met by an unexpected visitor - [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]. Being the man he was, Kintobor welcomed the hedgehog, and showed him around his lab, and told him what the R.O.C.C. was. He also told him of the [[Chaos Emeralds]] that were inside, and how they were the key to storing the evil inside.

Time went on, and Sonic, who was depicted as being brown, became the subject of one of Kintobor's experiments. Wanting to see just how fast the hedgehog could run, he put him on a supersonic treadmill to record his speeds. As it would, the treadmill was unable to handle Sonic's top speeds, resulting in an explosion that would transform Sonic into his classic blue hue. This also prompted Kintobor to create the red and white frictionless shoes that Sonic would wear from then on.

This relative peace was not to last, for one day while working over the R.O.C.C. trying to keep it stable, Kintobor asked Sonic to get him a soda pop and a hardboiled egg. Sonic got it in a flash, but due to the doctor's clumsiness, he spilled the drink, causing the R.O.C.C. to overload and all the evil to enter Kintobor. He was promptly transformed into his exact opposite, which was even reflected in his name. No longer was he Dr. Ovi Kintobor, but instead Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the most evil being on the planet [[Mobius]]. (Note that Kintobor is actually Robotnik spelled backwards.)

===[[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)]]===
While previous and future incarnations of the villain Dr. Robotnik would lean toward humor, the version present in the Saturday morning series ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' produced by [[DiC Entertainment]] was the polar opposite of this. By the time the series began, Dr. Robotnik had already ruled the planet for a decade, nearly all living things already gone through the [[Roboticization]] process. Only small pockets of resistance exist on the planet, the one he cares most about being the band led by [[Princess Sally Acorn|Princess Sally]] of [[Knothole Village|Knothole]], which features [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]. Robotnik's obsession with Sonic has caused most of his attention to focus on luring out and getting rid of his greatest foe, sometimes neglecting to think about the consequences of his actions, even if he is warned by his nephew, [[Snively]], that his rash attacks on the mere hint of Sonic could threaten his other operations.

The second season of the series went on to explain how Robotnik was able to ascend to power, once being an understudy of the wizard [[Ixis Naugus]], who was the discoverer of "[[The Void]]." Seeing the possibilities of such a locale, Robotnik betrayed Ixis, sending him into "The Void" and sealing him within. With Ixis gone, Robotnik (who was known only as Julian at this point) went on to become War Minister for the [[House of Acorn]] during the [[Great War]]. Though the details of the war are never mentioned, he uses his position to secure his army of [[SWATbots]], and when the war is over and King declares for the army to be decommissioned, Robotnik turns on the House of Acorn and swiftly takes over the planet.

While the show never speaks on the earlier days of Robotnik, [[Ben Hurst]], the head writer of the show, says the backstory they worked with was that Robotnik was from our future but [[Mobius]]' past, and in the year 2200 attempted to take over the space colony he was living in. Inadvertently destroying it instead, Robotnik and Snively narrowly escape with their lives, and are sent into the distant future where they return to Earth, only to find it has become Mobius. Thinking that he is superior to the animals that now inhabit the planet, he sets about to conquer it in any way he can.[http://www.saturdaymorningsonic.com/features/ben_hurst/]

It should also be noted that this Dr. Robotnik's design is heavily based on the design made by [[Milton Knight]] for ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'', as the two animated series were developed at the same time by DiC.

===[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)]]===
The history of Dr. Eggman in the ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' series by Archie can be confusing to the novice, his current incarnation deeply rooted in the early days of the series. Currently there have been two main antagonists with the Dr. Robotnik name, sometimes referred to as "Robotnik I" and "Robotnik II."

====Dr. Robotnik I====
[[Image:SonictheHedgehog15Archie.jpg|thumb|190px|The original Dr. Robotnik of the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Archie series]].]]
"Robotnik I" was born Julian Kintobor of the House of Ivo. His parents were from separate parts of the planet [[Mobius]], one being part of the [[Overlanders]] tribe, the other from the surviving humans living in [[Station Square]]. Growing up with the Overlanders, he began plotting his rise to power early on, sabotaging anyone who stood in his way. One of these early causalities was his mentor, [[Nate Morgan]], who Julian conspired to have banished. With Nate gone, Julian worked within the Overlanders military operations, constructing sophisticated technology used in their war with the [[House of Acorn|Kingdom of Acorn]].

However, it was soon discovered that Julian had been using living Overlanders to test his war machines, and the Minister of Justice, his brother [[Colin Kintobor]], tried and convicted him of his crimes. Sentenced to imprisonment, Julian managed to escape and disappeared into the [[Badlands]], where he was discovered by [[Jules Hedgehog|Jules]] and [[Uncle Chuck|Sir Charles]], [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]'s father and Uncle Chuck, respectively. Taking him back to [[King Acorn]], Julian was welcomed with open arms once he promised to help them defeat his own people. He briefly allied himself with then-warlord [[Kodos]], who wanted to overthrow the kingdom and throw the King into the [[Zone of Silence]], but Julian used this knowledge to instead banish Kodos, positioning himself as the new warlord of the Acorn army.

Eventually, the House of Acorn was able to win the [[Great War]], and Julian found himself in exactly the position he wanted. While he told King Acorn he would assume the mantle of Minister of Science, he instead set into motion his own takeover of the kingdom. In the twilight days of the war, Julian had discovered that Sir Charles had been working on a machine that could turn living tissue into robotic parts, in an attempt to save lives that would otherwise be lost. The first to undergo the process of [[Roboticization]] was Sonic's father, Jules, but because of sabotage by Julian, Jules became nothing more than an android who only listened to the Overlander. Jules wife [[Bernie Hedgehog|Bernie]] was the next to undergo the process, and it was only a matter of time before he used the machine as the tool to roboticize the citizens of [[Mobotropolis]], seizing the kingdom using his [[SWATbots|SWATbot]] army and sending the king into the Zone of Silence. With this act Julian Kintobor changed his name to Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and transformed the capital into [[Robotropolis]], with only a few of its citizens able to escape from his conquest.

While he was able to overtake Mobotropolis as he did in the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Saturday morning series]] that inspired the show, he never had as tight a grip on the planet as his counterpart. It was shown later on that many areas of Mobius still had unroboticized beings, and these places were ruled by sub-bosses such as the [[Iron Queen]]. Also, in the earlier issues of the series, while Sonic and the [[Freedom Fighters]] fought Robotnik in an effort to save Mobius, his earlier schemes against those who dared to fight him were more comical in nature, his personality closer to the ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' Robotnik than the Saturday morning alternative his design was based on. It was only as the series progressed that he began to act more like an evil dictator and less as a comical villain.

Dr. Robotnik's rule finally ended in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 050 (Archie)|issue 50]], the culmination of the "[[Sonic the Hedgehog 047 (Archie)|Endgame]]" story arc. During one final confrontation with Sonic, Robotnik attempts to set off his "Ultimate Annihilator," blind to the fact that his nephew [[Snively]] had sabotaged the machine. While Sonic was able to escape, Dr. Robotnik's particles were scattered, putting an end to the conflict that had been the focus of the series.

====Dr. Robotnik II====
[[Image:Archie108p05.jpg|thumb|190px|Robotnik I and Robotnik II come face to face.]]
After the defeat Dr. Robotnik, the [[Freedom Fighters]] set about to rebuild [[Mobius]], and the next few issues dealt less with action and more with restoration. However, in the build-up to [[Sonic the Hedgehog 075 (Archie)|issue 75]], a mysterious being known only as "Anonymous" began interfering with the planet, its origins traced back to a series of satellites orbiting it. When the Freedom Fighters went up to investigate, they found themselves face to face with Robo-Robotnik, an alternate version of their own Robotnik from a parallel universe.

Back in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 019 (Archie)|issue 19]] of the series, [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]] and the rest of the Knothole gang were met by a version of Sonic who was half-roboticized. This version of Sonic explained that he was from a universe that was similar to theirs, except his Robotnik was able to capture and roboticize everyone. When realizing that this was actually a terrible move, their Dr. Robotnik went through his own Roboticization process, and began a quest to find the pieces of the "Giant Borg," a device that would help him not only take over his own Mobius, but countless others. With the combined might of numerous Sonic's, Robo-Robotnik was defeated, and thought completely destroyed.

In reality, he was able to save his consciousness, transferring it into a satellite back in his home reality and waited for the perfect time to strike. When he shows up in issue 75, he explains that he was able to finally defeat his own version of Sonic, but was unsatisfied, and decided to attack the universe that had thwarted him before. While the Freedom Fighters were able to destroy his robot body, he pulled the same trick once again, and transferred his consciousness into a body made in the design of Dr. Eggman from the ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' games. As time passed, he dropped the Robotnik moniker entirely, calling himself Dr. Eggman. While for a time he upgraded his body to be able to roboticize people at his very touch, this disappeared when he was finally turned back into flesh and blood through the intervention of the [[Bem]] alien race. Once again human, Dr. Eggman continued his assault against Sonic the Hedgehog, his personality shifting closer to the games depiction with each passing issue.

The two Robotnik's have met three times in the course of the series, the first being in the previously mentioned issue 19. The second was in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 022 (Archie)|issue 22]], when Robo-Robotnik saved Robotnik from certain death in the previous issue, and in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 108 (Archie)|issue 108]], when Dr. Eggman is able to briefly put Dr. Robotnik's particles back together after the events of issue 50, in the hopes to trick the Freedom Fighters. While their final team-up resulted in a loss for both of them, the door to the original Dr. Robotnik's return has been left open.

===[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Troll Associates book)]]===
Taking elements from the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Saturday morning series]] and the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Archie comic book]], the children's novel ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Troll Associates book)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' gives Robotnik a very clear, yet puzzling origin. Being an orphan, Robotnik is taken in by [[Uncle Chuck|Charles Hedgehog]], who is called Uncle Chuck by the other orphan he is taking care of, [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]. Even though they grew up together, Sonic and Robotnik never got along, the future dictator more interested in building robots rather than having fun.

Often stealing parts from Uncle Chuck's belongings, things take a turn for the worse when he steals the steering components from Uncle Chuck's tractor, right before Chuck gets on it to take it to the neighbors. The result of Uncle Chuck losing control of the tractor puts both he and Robotnik trapped between it and a tree, and Sonic is forced to rescue them. Its only later that Uncle Chuck finds out that it was Robotnik's fault, and in an effort to punish him sets off the child's wrath. Years later, Uncle Chuck is one of the first victims of Robotnik's takeover and subsequent [[roboticization]], although Sonic is able to save his uncle by the first novel's end. Unlike the material it is sourced from, it is never explained how Robotnik gathered his power or how he learned the secrets of roboticization.

This origin story was also used in the original [[Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Archie Mini-Series)|Archie mini-series]], but presented as an imaginary story; a bad dream that Sonic is thankful never actually happened.

===[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]===
[[Image:Diplomarobotnik.png|thumb|190px|Dr. Ivo Robotnik, as interpreted by [[Milton Knight]].]]
The Robotnik featured in ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' is never given as clear an origin as in the other [[DiC Entertainment]] series, instead being presented as the classic villain who wants to rule the world simply because he can. As emphasized by his supporting cast [[Scratch]], [[Grounder (AoStH)|Grounder]], and [[Coconuts (AoStH)|Coconuts]], his three main [[badniks]], he doesn't nearly take himself as seriously as his [[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Saturday morning]] counterpart.

While Dr. Robotnik calls himself the ruler of [[Mobius]], it is very much in his own mind, and is never to extend his influence beyond his own fortress. Each time he tries, he is thwarted by [[Sonic the Hedgehog]], which spawns his trademark phrase he speaks at the end of each episode, "I hate that hedgehog!" He is portrayed very much as a comical foe, more so than any other version of Dr Robotnik/Dr. Eggman, his persona fitting into the world of ''Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog''.

While his past is never fully explored, there are some instances in which parts are revealed, often just for the point of that one episode. The episode "[[Best Hedgehog]]" tells of how Robotnik, an overweight, acme-ridden teenager, had a crush on a girl named Lucinda in his high school. While he tries to win her affections, she is instead attracted to another man named Lucas. Robotnik tries to win her by attacking Lucas with one of his early inventions, but he fails, and once he becomes the Robotnik he is in the show, holds Lucas captive for decades until Sonic is able to free him.

Robotnik also has family in the show, his [[Mama Robotnik|mother]] appearing a handful of times during the run. While she looks like Robotnik in a dress, mustache and all, Dr. Robotnik is afraid of her far more than anything else, and tries desperately to hide her away in the Mobius asylum. Robotnik also makes his own robotic son, [[Robotnik Junior]], who looks like a younger version of Robotnik. Unfortunately for him, his son defects to the [[Freedom Fighters]].

Important to note is that Dr. Robotnik, as he is depicted in ''Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog'', was designed by cartoonist [[Milton Knight]]. His redesign of Robotnik was done to ensure that the doctor would be "animation's sexiest fat man!"[http://www.miltonknight.net/robotnikmodel1.html]

===[[Sonic the Comic]]===
''[[Sonic the Comic]]'', the series published by [[Fleetway]], used the Westernized [[Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic)|origin story]] as their background, having [[Dr. Ovi Kintobor]] accidentally transform into the evil Dr. Robotnik. However, instead of having soda play a part, Kintobor trips over a cable while holding a rotten egg, causing the transformation. While Kintobor's consciousness still existed in digitized form as a computer, the villainous Robotnik soon began his plans for world domination.

While early issues featured Robotnik in his classic game design, and his dialogue full of egg puns, [[Sonic the Comic 008|issue 8]] of the series began a turn of events that would dictate the rest of the series, with Dr. Robotnik sending [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]] and friends forward in time. While only displaced by six months, it is more than enough time for Robotnik to succeed in taking over [[Mobius]], forcing Sonic to become not just a foil to his schemes, but as leader of the [[Freedom Fighters]].

As the comic continued, Robotnik's personality began to shift away from a more humorous style and toward that of his [[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Saturday morning]] counterpart. This was even reflected in his change of clothing, shunning his simple dress for the more menacing style of that Dr. Robotnik. It was [[Sonic the Comic 021|issue 21]] that Robotnik decided he needed to not only change his clothing, but his entire body, and encased himself in an egg, emerging as the ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' styled Robotnik. He kept this form for the rest of the series, although he did change his clothes one final time in the ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' adaptation, putting on the jacket his game counterpart had adopted.

As the series progressed, Dr. Robotnik was met with failure after failure, losing his empire in [[Sonic the Comic 100|issue 100]] and unable to ever gain it back. While there were times in the comic that he almost achieved godhood, he was always thwarted by Sonic and the Freedom Fighters, which affected him to point of depression. His faithful assistant, [[Grimer]], not wanting to stand by and watch his master wither away, decides to unleash [[Perfect Chaos|Chaos]], in the hopes of defeating Sonic and reclaiming Mobius. While at first it looks as though Robotnik is reinspired by these events, in actuality he cares for nothing anymore, and wants to end it all, even if it means the planet goes down with him.

One last thing to note is that during the course of the series, the [[Metal Sonic]]-based Metallix went back in time to prevent the creation of Robotnik, as in an alternate timeline they still existed because it was Robotnik's assistant Grimer who designed them, Robotnik only adding a self-destruct mechanism. Because of this, Sonic was forced to go back in time and make sure that Kintobor would trip over the wire and cause his transformation, thereby creating his greatest foe.

===[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Anime)]]===
Produced under the supervision of [[Sonic Team]], the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Anime)|two part OVA]] featured a Dr. Eggman who was closer to his game counterpart compared to any that had come before. While he is the ruler of [[Eggmanland]], it is a city that is below where most of the inhabitants of [[Planet Freedom]] live, built on the outskirts of what was once New York City. He is both cunning and charismatic, yet still childish, easily falling for the whims of the [[President of South Island|President]]'s daughter, [[Sara]].

While [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]] doesn't necessarily believe Eggman's story about Eggmanland being overtaken by [[Black Eggman]], he and [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]] go ahead anyway, and it is only later that Sonic's beliefs are confirmed that Eggman was involved from the beginning, and that it was all merely a ploy to allow his latest creation, [[Hyper Metal Sonic]] to be complete. While Eggman wishes to rule as his game counterpart, he has no qualms with what he plans to do with Hyper Metal Sonic - destroy that which keeps the [[Land of the Sky]] afloat, leaving only the [[Land of Darkness]] and Eggman's empire.

Also, throughout the anime, it is revealed that Eggman is not holding the President's daughter hostage to have a bargaining chip to let his plans go into motion, but because he is enamored with her. He fully intends on marrying Sara once Planet Freedom's Land of the Sky shatters, and have a fleet of children with her.

===[[Sonic Underground]]===
The final of the three [[DiC Entertainment|DiC]] Sonic productions, ''[[Sonic Underground]]'' once again returns to the Dr. Robotnik design from the previous show, ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]''. While he once again overthrew the original ruler of the planet, this time it was [[Queen Aleena Hedgehog]], mother of [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]] and his two siblings, [[Sonia the Hedgehog|Sonia]] and [[Manic the Hedgehog|Manic]]. Although he does overthrow her, she is able to escape, and protect her children from his grasp. As they grow, Robotnik secures his place as the ruler of [[Mobius]], and while he does have the capability to [[Roboticization|roboticize]] anyone, he chooses not to do it across the entire planet, choosing only those who oppose them. Along with his sidekicks, the bounty hunters [[Sleet]] and [[Dingo]], Robotnik spends his time making sure he is the undisputed ruler of Mobius, continually seeking out Queen Aleena and her three children, most of all Sonic, to make sure the prophecy of his downfall never comes to pass.

The character of Robotnik also has a bit more emphasis on maintaining some form of the old order, leaving the nobility of the planet alone for the most part, as long as they pay him tribute and allow him to be the ruler. This alone shows that he is not as strict a dictator as in the Saturday morning series, and is slightly more interested in being adored by the public.

===[[Sonic X]]===
Also produced under the supervision of [[Sonic Team]], ''[[Sonic X]]'' keeps Dr. Eggman close to his gaming counterpart, going after the [[Chaos Emeralds]] and going head to head with [[Sonic the Hedgehog]]. Although he has succeeded in getting the seven Chaos Emeralds in the beginning of the first episode, the machine that he has them connected to causes [[Chaos Control]] to occur, sending the main cast and those nearby to an alternate dimension, and to planet Earth.

While he immediately begins the same tricks that he started on their home planet, Eggman seems to treat his encounters with Sonic not strictly as fights over the planet, but more akin to the friendly rivalry aspects that are hinted at in the games. This is expanded further on in the [[Sonic X (Archie comics)|comic series]] based on the show published by [[Archie Comics|Archie]], in which Eggman takes on the moniker of wrestling sensation El Gran Gordo, that allows Eggman to enjoy not only the sensation of winning, but also of being adored.

==Miscellaneous==
*Although never confirmed, it is speculated that Dr. Eggman's name was inspired by The Beatles' classic tune "[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_The_Walrus I am the Walrus]." The song featuring the lyrics "I am the Eggman/We are the Eggmen/I am the Walrus/Goo goo g'joob." It is also because of this possible connection that Sega of America may have wanted to change Dr. Eggman's name, in the fear of being sued by The Beatles' label Apple for copyright infringement.

*A potential macrocycle inhibitor of the gene Sonic hedgehog was discovered by a Harvard University research team, who decided to name it "Robotnikinin." They felt that since the original had been named after the video game character, they should "adhere to the convention" and name the newly discovered compound after his archenemy.[http://www.biotechnews.com.au/article/273516/robotnikinin_takes_sonic_hedgehog?fp=4&fpid=1013]

*While Dr. Eggman has always been the name of the character in Japan, in localization for western markets it wad decided to name the character Dr. Ivo Robotnik. The name was conceived by [[Dean Sitton]], who was working for [[Sega of America]]'s helpline at the time. By the time ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' came along and [[Sega]] decided to discontinue the western story involving [[Dr. Ovi Kintobor|Kintobor]], they did incorporate the Robotnik name into the game canon, with Eggman's grandfather Professor [[Gerald Robotnik]] having the same surname in all versions of the game. Even so, modern games almost exclusively stick to the Dr. Eggman name.

*Dr. Eggman's only headlining role in a game was ''[[Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine]]'', a western adaptation of the original ''[[Puyo Puyo]]'' puzzle game released in Japan. The game's look and feel was based on the ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' animated series, and used [[Milton Knight]]'s design of Robotnik. It is interesting to note that this design of Robotnik was subsequently used in official merchandising and advertising for the games, especially in Europe. The most notable of these changes occurred on the ''[[Sonic Spinball]]'' boxart, in which the [[Mega Drive]] version featured the [http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Spinball-box-us.jpg Americanized version] of the Japanese art, while the [[Sonic Spinball (8-bit)|downgraded port]] for the [[Master System]] and [[Game Gear]] had the [http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Spinballgg-box-us.jpg Milton Knight design].
'''Sonic the Hedgehog''' ([[Japanese language|Japanese]]: ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Romaji: ''Sonikku za hejjihoggu''), "The Most Famous Hedgehog In The World," is the flagship character for home and [[arcade game]] (and former game console) maker [[Sega]]. Designed to compete with [[Nintendo]]'s mascot [[Mario]], the two companies went head to head for over a decade, until Sega pulled out of the home console market.

Sega has made numerous video games starring Sonic since his debut in 1991, spanning five generations of console manufacturing. Through numerous aggressive ad campaigns (the most famous being the touting of "[[Blast Processing]]," described as being able to render [[sprite|sprites]] at extreme speeds but actually referring to the CPU's [[clock rate]]), Sonic soon became one of the most recognizable fictional character in the world, even beating out Mickey Mouse for a time. While his glory days may be behind him, Sonic is still a significant part of gaming, and it can not be denied that he forever changed the gaming landscape.

==Character Conception==
[[Image:S1concept-HEDGEHOG.png|thumb|190px|Early design of Sonic the Hedgehog.]]
By 1990, [[Sega]] had grown tired of playing second-fiddle to [[Nintendo]], and sought to redefine their image with a game that would be able to go head to head with the Super Mario Bros. series. Up to this point, Sega had been using [[Alex Kidd]] as their unofficial mascot for their [[Sega Master System|Master System]] outings, but the corporate heads wanted to present something that could directly compete with the Mario character, and in the process knock Nintendo from the number one spot in the gaming world. An internal competition was held to find a new mascot that would both appeal to a wide audience and showcase what their latest system, the [[Sega Mega Drive|Mega Drive]], was capable of. While many designs were introduced ranging from a [[Game Development:Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Felix-inspired Rabbit to an American-looking bulldog]], and even early designs of what would end up being [[Dr. Eggman]] and [[Mighty the Armadillo]], it was [[Naoto Ohshima]]'s simple [[hedgehog]] design that caught everyone's attention.

Originally named "Mr. Needlemouse," the design of the small, blue, spiny being took many cues from American culture. The look of Sonic's classic buckled shoes took direct inspiration from [[Michael Jackson]]'s boots from the cover of his "Bad" album, while the color scheme was taken from the most famous character of all time - Santa Claus. Sonic's personality, on the other hand, was directly inspired by future-President Bill Clinton, who Ohshima felt embodied a modern sensibility of wanting to get things done right away, righting wrongs as they presented themselves instead of letting them linger.[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D9h-4vQUHM]

[[Image:Sonic_Gems_300.jpg|thumb|190px|A later concept drawing of Sonic the Hedgehog and the world around him. Includes an early version of [[Dr. Eggman]] and Madonna, the unused "love interest."]]
With character in hand, and the future of Sega riding on them, Sega's AM8 division (who decided to call themselves "[[Sonic Team]]") set about making what they would hope become a successful game. While Ohshima was responsible for the look of Sonic the Hedgehog, he was only one part of the team that helped bring him to life. It was [[Yuji Naka]] that helped instill Sonic's trademark sense of speed by programming what was, at the time, the fastest game anyone had played on a home console. Having been obsessed with speed as a youth, he relished creating a game engine designed around a character who was focused on the same theme, even going as far as removing the original throwing-element of gameplay because it slowed down the overall flow. Rounding off the classic trio was [[Hirokazu Yasuhara]], the Game Planner and Director, making sure all the pieces of the game fit together, while at the same time creating fun and memorable levels that would make people want more. The work of these three men, along with the other 12 members of the team, helped propel Sonic the Hedgehog to heights not even Sega could have foreseen.

The success of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' caused other companies to take notice, and the trend of anthropomorphic mascots was born. Sparkster, Bubsy, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Blinx, and Sly Cooper are only a few of the characters that have tried to emulate Sonic the Hedgehog over the years. While some were more successful than others, none could reach the heights Sonic skyrocketed to.

===Origin of Sonic===
[[Image:Classic_sonic_orthographic.svg|thumb|190px|Sonic the Hedgehog's classic design, as used from 1991-1997.]]
In the original game continuity, Sonic's past is never explicitly explained, and perhaps purposefully never hinted at. According to the [[Original Story|Sonic the Hedgehog Technical Documents]], Sonic was born on [[Christmas Island]], although the island has yet to make an appearance within the games. The only other piece of information on Sonic's past is that he and [[Dr. Eggman]] have had a fierce rivalry that has existed long before the original ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' console game. Though the details of these early encounters are never expanded upon, it is made clear the first time the [[Chaos Emeralds]] become a source of contention is during the events of the first game. The first battle over the Chaos Emeralds was retold in the ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic]]'' released in Japan, where Dr. Eggman first fights Sonic over the gems by interrupting a concert the hedgehog is singing in.[http://manga.portalsonic.com/index.php?date=2010-06-23] However, as the comic is based heavily on the early concepts of the game that ultimately never made it in, it is unknown how this relates to the current game continuity. Nevertheless, the ending to both is the same, with Sonic triumphing over the doctor.

While Sonic has visited and explored [[South Island]] many times, Sonic is something of a nomad, never content with staying in one place for too long. Preferring to travel to new areas and locals looking for exciting new adventures, he only slows down when Dr. Eggman appears, foiling whatever new scheme to take over the world the doctor has.

The same documents which mentioned Christmas Island (which were printed in the ''[[Sonic Adventure 2: Birthday Pack|Sonic Adventure 2 Birthday Pack]]'') offer an alternate, whimsical story in which Sonic the Hedgehog was originally a fictional character created by Mary Garnet, who used him in a series of children's novels. Inspired by her husband and his dream of being the first man to break the sound barrier, the character adorned the back of his jacket at the airfield he worked, becoming a mascot to those who worked alongside him. After an attempt to succeed in this dream turned tragic, both the man and and the hedgehog were slowly forgotten of as time moved on. Decades pass, and a young camerawoman attends an airshow at the same field, wearing the hedgehog-adorned jacket she recently bought at a flea market, remembering the character from her childhood. Getting caught up in an accident that occurs, she finds herself saved by a mysterious force, who she later finds was Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue blur and familiar shoes being found in her developed pictures. However, this story has never been referenced in the games, and only acknowledged by the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog as an alternate fictional story, solely intended to grab people's attention to the Mega Drive original.
===Personality and Traits===
[[Image:CS S US.png|thumb|190px|Sonic the Hedgehog's profile from ''[[Sonic Jam]]''.]]
[[Image:SA Sonic Original.jpg|thumb|190px|The original unveiling of Sonic the Hedgehog's redesign. From ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''.]]
Sonic the Hedgehog is a 15 year old blue hedgehog who lives in no particular locale on the planet Earth, instead choosing to travel the world looking for fun and adventure wherever he goes. While he may be a drifter, that doesn't mean he only cares about himself. Over the course of the games, Sonic meets other people whom he becomes close with, such as the over-eager sidekick [[Miles "Tails" Prower]], the friendly rival [[Knuckles the Echidna]], and the obsessive fangirl [[Amy Rose]]. While some games show Sonic as more of an a-typical hero than others, traditionally he is someone who plays by his own rules, while maintaining a strong sense of justice. Even though he looks out for the underdog, he does not dedicate his life to romanticized ideals, oftentimes fighting Dr. Eggman for the fun and adventure of it all. While he doesn't let others dictate his actions, he won't hesitate if his friends are in trouble, and though he maintains a calm and cool attitude, he knows when to get serious when the stakes are high.

If there is one characteristic that defines Sonic the Hedgehog, it would have to be his supersonic speed. Able to go Mach 1 on his own power, it is this that sets him apart from the other characters in the series. While many of the main players have speeds that nearly match Sonic's, it isn't unusual to see him waiting for everyone else to show up, tapping his foot and crossing his arms in impatience. Sonic also has the ability to curl up into a ball and perform a [[Spin attack|spin attack]], which makes his quills a deadly enough weapon to cut through the doctor's machines and free whatever animal may lie inside. He also possesses the [[Spin Dash|spin dash]], in which Sonic curls into a ball, revving up enough speed where he can dash ahead without having to build up the momentum beforehand. While the spin attack and the spin dash have been emulated by many other members in the cast, they have not been able to recreate the [[Super Peel-Out]] move, in which Sonic builds up even more momentum while standing, his legs moving so fast they become a figure 8 to the naked eye. However, Sonic is not infallible, his one major weakness being that he is incapable of swimming, forced to run along the bottom of whatever water-filled zone he happens to be in, relying on any air bubbles that spring up to prevent him from drowning.

Sonic also has the capability of [[Super transformation|transforming]] into a super-powered version of himself through the use of whatever mystical item Sonic has to collect during his adventures, such as the [[Chaos Emeralds]] and the [[World Rings]]. Among his many transformations are [[Super Sonic]], [[Hyper Sonic]], and [[Darkspine Sonic]]. It is usually this transformation that drives the final confrontation in each installment of the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series.

While Sonic can still drown in his Super Sonic transformation, he cannot while being Hyper Sonic.

==Sonic in Other Media==
Due to the fractured nature of bringing Sonic into other mediums, Sonic's origin story has not remained consistent when transformed into television, comic books, or even localized for Western markets. Because of this, there are many conflicting origin stories regarding the character "Sonic the Hedgehog."

===Westernized Game Localization===
[[Image:STHPromoSTHPromo05.jpg|thumb|190px|Sonic turns to his familiar blue hue. The [[Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic)|promotional comic]] was published in such magazines as EGM.]]
Not content with the simple explanation provided by Sega of Japan, Sega of America set to create their own origin of Sonic, meant to appeal to an American, and by extension, European audience. The [[Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic)|first published version]] of this story, a comic written by [[Francis Mao]], took a direction decidedly different from the Japanese explanation. In the comic, which takes the form of an extended flashback, Sonic explains to his animal friends how [[Dr. Eggman|Robotnik]], who appeared out of nowhere to terrorize the residents of the island, was actually once [[Dr. Ovi Kintobor]]. A benevolent scientist who only wished to save the world from the forces of evil, Sonic accidentally stumbled across the doctor's hidden laboratory while digging through the surface of the planet. The lanky, older doctor is stunned to find the small, brown, prickly hedgehog, but they soon become friends, Kintobor more than willing to share with Sonic what he has been working on in secret. He shows off his latest creation, his device to rid the world of evil: the [[R.O.C.C.|Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor]] (R.O.C.C. for short). Maintained by Containment [[Ring|Rings]] (which are meant to be the rings one collects in the games), the R.O.C.C. is powered by six [[Chaos Emeralds]] floating within, tasked to absorb all the evil energy on the planet [[Mobius]]. However, without the final seventh emerald, the R.O.C.C. remains in a state of flux.

In the interim, Kintobor decides to study Sonic's speed, putting him on an experimental treadmill meant to gauge how quickly he could run. In no time, Sonic reaches the speed of sound, causing the treadmill to explode and turning his hue from dirty brown to a brilliant blue. Kintobor says it must be the "cobalt effect," and makes him a pair of frictionless shoes to allow Sonic to keep on hitting these speeds without any further repercussions.

One fateful day, Kintobor asks Sonic to bring him a soda and a hardboiled egg, and due to the doctor's clumsiness, spills the soda onto the control panel of the R.O.C.C., infusing him with the total collected evil energy stored within. The transformation, aided by the hardboiled egg, causes Kintobor to take on the shape of the egg, completing the process to turn the gentle doctor into the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik. This version of the story was later rewritten by [[Mike Pattenden]] in the book ''[[Stay Sonic|Stay Sonic: Official Sega Handbook]]''.

[[Sega]]’s official American homepage from 1996[http://web.archive.org/web/19970215141413/www.sega.com/features/allsonic/biography/bio01.html] expanded slightly on this story, showing that many of the attributes that made up Sonic were in fact learned from the [[Animals|animals]] that you rescue in the games. [[Pocky|Johnny Lightfoot]] teaches Sonic how to run, [[Ricky|Sally Acorn]] teaches him how to jump great distances, [[Rocky|Joe Sushi]] shows him how to swim, [[Pecky|Tux]] gives him the secret to breathing underwater, [[Flicky]] inspires his carefree approach to life, and [[Cucky|Chirps]] shows him to do the [[Spin attack|Super Sonic Spin Attack]]. This pattern of having everyone else teach Sonic his moves even continued into the westernized ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2]]'' [[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit) US Manual|manual]], in which his new [[Spin Dash|spin dash]] move was shown to him by [[Miles "Tails" Prower]].

An early proposal of the westernized version of the Sonic story, in which some elements were used to make the above, can be read [[Sega of America - Sonic Origin Story Documents (Sonic Bible)|here]].

===Shogakukan Manga===
One of the earliest transitions for Sonic from video game hero to alternate media, the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (manga)|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' manga]] from the publication ''[[Shogaku Yonensei]]'' has Sonic as an alter-ego of another hedgehog named Nicky, who can transform into Sonic when need be. He is joined by [[Miles "Tails" Prower]] while in Sonic form, who assists in fighting the evil (if comical) villain [[Dr. Eggman]]. In his secret identity Nicky, he has an entirely different supporting cast, including early forms of [[Charmy Bee]] and [[Amy Rose]]. This version of Amy is actually Nicky's girlfriend, as opposed to the "self-proclaimed girlfriend" role she plays in the games. Even though she is with the bespectacled hedgehog, her heart still pines for Sonic, oblivious to the fact Nicky and Sonic are one and the same.

===Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)===
[[Image:Sonic-and-Sally.jpg|thumb|190px|Sonic alongside [[Princess Sally Acorn]], from ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]''.]]
The Saturday Morning cartoon ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' featured a vastly different origin than any previous continuity up to that point. While still portrayed as the "blue dude with an attitude," Sonic lives not on a planet that [[Dr. Eggman|Dr. Robotnik]] wants to take over, but has already succeeded in doing so. Having overthrown the [[Acorn Kingdon]] and conquered [[Mobius]] ten years prior while Sonic was but five years of age, Sonic and a small group of friends are forced to grow up in a secluded area known as [[Knothole Village|Knothole]], located in the [[Great Forest]] and away from Robotnik's watchful eye. The majority of Mobium citizens have undergone a process known as [[Roboticization]], created by Sonic's [[Uncle Chuck]] for benevolent purposes but misused by Doctor Robotnik.

Once Sonic and the rest of the Knothole [[Freedom Fighters]] reach their teenage years, they set about overthrowing the evil dictator, his nephew [[Snively]], and his entire empire. Sonic is joined by [[Princess Sally Acorn]] (the love interest), [[Rotor Walrus]] (the go-to tech guy), [[Bunnie Rabbot]] (the sassy half-robotocized friend), [[Antoine D'Coolette]] (the comic relief), and [[Miles "Tails" Prower]] (the ever-loving sidekick) as they attempt to revert [[Robotropolis]] back to the city they once lived in, [[Mobotropolis]], and rescue the exiled [[King Acorn]] from "[[The Void]]." Though Sonic often acts rashly when confronted with Dr. Robotnik's [[SWATBots]], he will often defer to Princess Sally, who is the true leader of the Freedom Fighters and the resistance as a whole. Only on for two seasons, the final released episodes show the Freedom Fighters, along with Sonic, make a final push against his [[The Doomsday Project|"Doomsday Project"]], with Sonic and Sally being the ones who end it. With Sonic able to admit his feelings for Sally, the series ended on a cliffhanger, canceled as the third season began per-production. To date, no official continuation of the series has ever been released.

===Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)===
[[Image:SonictheHedgehog37Archie.jpg|thumb|190px|Sonic the Hedgehog doing what he does best on the cover of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' [[Sonic the Hedgehog 037 (Archie)|Issue 37]].]]
The [[Archie Comics|Archie]] comic book series, ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Sonic The Hedgehog]]'', takes the same basic premise of the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|Saturday Morning]] series, having Sonic and the rest fight off the evil [[Dr. Eggman|Dr. Robotnik]] and attempt to free their home and their planet. However, Robotnik's grip is not as strong, as there are more pockets of resistance and less [[Roboticization|Roboticized]] Mobians within the story. Also, since the early issues used concepts from the series ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'', the doctor was not originally portrayed as harshly as his televised counterpart, his schemes often having some sort of ridiculous premise behind them. It wasn't until the [[Sonic the Hedgehog 025 (Archie)|Sonic CD adaptation]] that the series slowly shifted gears, heading toward a version of Dr. Robotnik that resembled the Saturday morning version more and more with each passing issue, culminating in the now-infamous "[[Sonic the Hedgehog 047 (Archie)|Endgame]]" story arc.

In the aftermath of defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic and the rest of the [[Freedom Fighters]] set about transforming [[Robotropolis]] back into the city of their youth. In the process, Sonic discovers that his parents are still alive, having lived in the catacombs of Robotropolis, hidden there before the coup. His father, [[Jules Hedgehog]], having been injured, was robotocized by Sir Charles Hedgehog in an attempt to save his life, unknowingly using machinery that had been tampered with by Robotnik (at the time calling himself Julian Kintobor of the House of Ivo). When completed, Sir Charles decides to renounce his status as Minister of Science in the Acorn Kingdom, overcome by the guilt of seeing his brother now nothing more than a mindless robot. Unknowingly, this action allowed Robotnik to claim not only the first victim of his coup d'etat, but his second - Sonic's mother, [[Bernadette Hedgehog]]. After the disappearance of his parents, Sonic ended up living with "Uncle Chuck" for a time, until Sonic was forced to escape to Knothole, his uncle becoming another casualty of the roboticization process. Though Sonic is at first upset at his uncle for keeping the fate of his parents a secret, he eventually forgives him and accepts his parents with open arms.

With the rebuilding of the Acorn Kingdom, Sonic and Tails go off on a mission to subdue [[Ixis Nagus]], and make sure he does nothing to disturb the peace they have only recently acquired. Unfortunately, even though the duo are successful, the Freedom Fighters are brought together once more to go up against an alternate Dr. Robotnik (who eventually calls himself Dr. Eggman) from a parallel universe. Bored of his own conquered world, he travels to "Mobius Prime" to rule over the only version of Sonic the Hedgehog that was able to defeat him. Though the empire he acquires rises and falls many times throughout the run, Eggman remains the main antagonist and arch-rival to Sonic the Hedgehog.

Because of the serialized nature of the medium, and the tendencies of former main writer [[Ken Penders]], Sonic's portrayal has ranged from the overtly silly to the dark and dreary. While [[Princess Sally Acorn]] is still presented as his main love interest, other characters such as [[Mina Mongoose]] and [[Fiona Fox]] have created love triangles and soap opera-esque tales that do not fit in with the style and personality of the video game series.

The comic has also embraced the idea of Sonic being obsessed with chili dogs, a trait that runs through the [[DiC Entertainment]] produced animated series.

===Sonic the Hedgehog (Troll Associates book)===
Based on the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|Saturday morning series]] and the [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)|Archie comic book]], as well as early concepts for both, the [[Troll Associates]] book ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Troll Associates book)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' expands on Sonic’s origin in a slightly different way than the rest. While the elements of [[Knothole Village|Knothole]], [[Uncle Chuck]], and the [[Freedom Fighters]] are all present, [[Dr. Eggman|Dr. Robotnik]] is introduced not as a master villain or even a comical one, but as a teenager, only fifteen years of age. Having been orphaned, Uncle Chuck decides to take him under his wing, just as he does Sonic, who is seven at this point. Predictably, the two orphans refuse to get along, even though Uncle Chuck encourages both of them.

Things take a turn for the worse when Robotnik decides to raid Uncle Chuck’s tractor and use the steering parts for his latest robot. When Chuck hops on his tractor, it goes out of control, forcing Sonic to save both his uncle and Robotnik from being pinned to a tree. Uncle Chuck only finds out about Robotnik’s misdeed when one of his own robots snitches on the future doctor. Angry, Charles sends Robotnik to his room, where the future ruler of [[Mobius]] sets to make his largest robot yet, which Sonic has to save Uncle Chuck from.

Eight years later, Sonic is now working with Uncle Chuck at his chili dog stand, with brand new sneakers his uncle invented for him. After the largest order yet, Sonic runs off to discover that the order was a trap, and when he runs back home discovers that his uncle and dog [[Muttski]] have been kidnapped by the now ruler of Mobius, the evil Dr. Robotnik. Knowing he has to rescue his uncle, he stumbles across [[Princess Sally Acorn]], who informs Sonic not only who she is, but what happened to her father. Together, along with the rest of the Freedom Fighters, they work to not only rescue Uncle Chuck, but restore the Kingdom of Acorn.

This origin story was also used in the original [[Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Archie Mini-Series)|Archie mini-series]], but presented as an imaginary story; a bad dream that Sonic is thankful never actually happened.

===Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog===
[[Image:LoveSick Sonic.jpg|thumb|190px|Sonic and brief love interest [[Breezie]]. Taken from the episode "[[Lovesick Sonic]]."]]
''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' (produced concurrently with Sonic's other animated series ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'') put Sonic once again on the planet [[Mobius]], trying to stay slightly more faithful to the source material than its Saturday morning counterpart, making Sonic and [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]] the main characters. [[Dr. Eggman|Robotnik]], while a dictator in his own mind, is never shown as actually having any part of Mobius truly under his thumb, or any real power whatsoever. Instead, he tries time and time again to defeat Sonic the Hedgehog, using absurd and wild plots that are slanted more towards the viewer's amusement than anything.

Sonic's attitude in the series is deeply rooted in the concept of what was "hip" in the early to mid-90's, spouting off slang and various catchphrases whenever possible. Possessing an appreciation of the opposite sex other versions of the character have overlooked, Sonic also had a tendency to disguise himself to trick Robotnik and his minions [[Scratch]] and [[Grounder (AoStH)|Grounder]], allowing their plans to blow up in their faces as a result. Even though episodes such as the [[Blackbot the Pirate|Chaos Emerald saga]] tried to raise the stakes, the characters in the series made sure to not take any event too seriously.

===Sonic the Comic===
[[Image:Sonic the Comic - Cover 100.jpg|thumb|190px|The cover to the triumphant [[Sonic the Comic 100|100th Issue]] of ''[[Sonic the Comic]]'']]
The UK-based ''[[Sonic the Comic]]'', produced by [[Fleetway]], took the origin story that Sega of America had produced as a basis, later introducing concepts and ideas from the other Sonic media of the time. While at first a very basic comic book, [[Sonic the Comic 008|issue #8]] retold the [[Dr. Ovi Kintobor|Kintobor]] origin, at the same time having [[Dr. Eggman|Robotnik]] sending Sonic a few months into the future. Instead of having Sonic prevent Robotnik from taking over the world, he now had to liberate [[Mobius]] with the help of staples like [[Miles "Tails" Prower]] and [[Amy Rose]], as well as alternate versions of his animal friends from the games, [[Johnny Lightfoot]] and [[Porker Lewis]].

While many other original elements were presented, the comic tried to keep as strong ties to the original games as possible, using enemies and zones from the games in the storyline. Sonic, meanwhile, possessed a slightly harder edge to his personality than in the [[DiC Entertainment|DiC-produced]] animated series, being slightly more obsessed with himself and even being vocally aggressive to his friends.

At one point, it is revealed that Robotnik was not the one who originally designed [[Metal Sonic]] (called Metallix in the comic book), but that it was instead created by his assistant [[Grimer]], and that Robotnik only installed a self-destruct mechanism in the off-chance they would rebel against him. When discovered, the Metallix go back in time to prevent the creation of Dr. Robotnik so this fail-safe device would not be implanted within them, forcing Sonic to go back in time and insure that Dr. Kintobor would indeed transform into the evil doctor. Because of this, Sonic realized that he was the one responsible for the creation of his greatest enemy, and the events that had transpired so far in the series.

Another aspect of the Fleetway series that was unique to its continuity was the presentation of Super Sonic. While still a super-powered form of Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Sonic was a force of nature that was wild and uncontrollable, often being more destructive than Dr. Robotnik. While there were times when Super Sonic had to be called into action, it was only as a last resort, for while he would defeat whatever it was the [[Freedom Fighters]] could not, he would immediately turn his attention to his friends and try to wipe them out. In the end, all anyone could do was wait it out, hoping that the Chaos energy would dissipate, turning Sonic back to normal before too much trouble was to be had.

===Sonic the Hedgehog (Anime)===
Produced under the supervision of [[Sonic Team]], this [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Anime)|two-part Japanese anime]] brought to life another version of Sonic the Hedgehog, also based on the games but once again being significantly different. Given no clear backstory, it is established that Sonic lives somewhere on South Island in the ruins of an airliner, and prefers to relax in this tropical locale than being needlessly bothered by other people. Sonic's personality leans more toward his [[Sonic the Comic|Fleetway]] counterpart than his ''[[Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' one. While he will still rush in to save his friends from certain danger and [[Dr. Eggman]], there are times when he wishes to be left alone, and can suddenly snap at even his closest friends and allies.

While Sonic and Eggman end up face to face often through the course of the show, the hedgehog never shows any sign of being intimidated or frightened of Eggman or his plans. Instead, he chooses to make snide remarks, teasing him and his forces. The only villain in the piece he shows anything more to is [[Metal Sonic]], and only once he recognizes that elements of his own personality were used to create the machine. It is also hinted at that he and [[Sara]] (the damsel-in-distress of the show) have some sort of attraction to each other, though neither explores it beyond simple flirting, mostly on Sara's part.

===Sonic Underground===
[[Image:Sonicundergroundcast.jpeg|thumb|190px|Sonic alongside siblings [[Sonia the Hedgehog|Sonia]] and [[Manic the Hedgehog|Manic]], the main cast of ''[[Sonic Underground]]''.]]
Once again creating a completely different origin story, [[DiC Entertainment]] chose to produce an animated series having nothing to do with either of their previous efforts. Born into a royal family, Sonic and his two siblings, [[Manic the Hedgehog|Manic]] and [[Sonia the Hedgehog]], are separated from their mother because of the intervention of [[Dr. Eggman|Dr. Robotnik]], who overthrows the kingdom. Maintaining his rule by appealing to the upper class, Dr. Robotnik's role as dictator forces the three hedgehog siblings to be raised by other families, and are only reunited once they reach their teenage years. Sonic, Sonia, and Manic then decide to form an underground rock group, appropriately named ''[[Sonic Underground]]''. They use the band as a front to gather intelligence and to one day reunite with their mother, [[Queen Aleena]], and overthrow Dr. Robotnik once and for all.

===Sonic X===
The second animated project under the direct supervision of [[Sonic Team]], ''[[Sonic X]]'' is closely based on the Sonic Adventure-era of Sonic's history, even sharing the same voice actors in the Japanese original. However, instead of living on a planet where humans and animals coexist, Sonic and his friends come from a separate reality on an unnamed planet. It is only because of Dr. Eggman's latest invention that causes a warp in space and time utilizing [[Chaos Control]] that sends the cast to the planet Earth, where Sonic immediately gets into trouble. After running from the police, he finds himself trapped in a pool, unable to escape until he gets help from a child who lives there, [[Chris Thorndyke]]. The two immediately become friends, and it isn't long before [[Miles "Tails" Prower]], [[Amy Rose]] and [[Cream the Rabbit]] also become friends with the Thorndyke clan, making up residence there until they can find a way back home.

While the first 26 episodes are unique stories, the second half of series one decided to adapt ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'', ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'' and ''[[Sonic Battle]]'', making changes to their individual stories as necessary. It was during this era of the show that Chris Thorndyke was replacing certain roles that were already taken up by other characters, including the role of sidekick and the person-in-distress. For example in the adaptation of ''Sonic Adventure 2'', where he takes Amy's role in the story, being the one to convince [[Shadow the Hedgehog]] to join with the other heroes to prevent the [[Space Colony ARK]] from crashing into Earth. So while the series is one of the closest attempts to bring the games into alternate media, there are still some differences which make ''Sonic X'' its own unique world.

==Miscellaneous==
*While Sonic's first staring role was in his self-titled 16-bit adventure, he first appeared in a cameo in the game ''[[Rad Mobile]]'' as the rearview mirror ornament. This was also the first of [[References to Sonic in video games|many cameos Sonic would have in other games]], perhaps the most famous being the mountain carving found in the first track of ''[[sega:Daytona USA|Daytona USA]]''.

*When it became possible to trademark certain three dimensional shape configurations for trademarked products and objects, Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the very first fictional characters to have his all-round shape trademarked.

*Interestingly, one of a class of genes involved in fruit fly embryonic development, called [[Sonic hedgehog|hedgehog genes]] after the name given to the first member of this class discovered, has been named sonic hedgehog after this character. The same gene (named shh for simplicity) has been found to be, in conjunction with other genes, pivotal in the formation of the pentadactyl limb in mice, and plays an interesting role in shaping the brain.

*Sonic the Hedgehog was the first video game character to be immortalized in balloon form at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The first year it was on the route, it also crashed into a streetlight, but no major injuries occurred from the collision.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macy's_Thanksgiving_Day_Parade]

*Sonic's age has always been a tricky one to pinpoint. According to the [[Original Story|Sonic Technical Files]], it says he is 18, "but it's kinda hard to tell." In a video for those who preordered ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 3]]'' in Japan, Sonic's age was listed as being "15~16."[http://info.sonicretro.org/File:SONIC_THE_HEDGEHOG_3_SONIC_History_Video.flv] Once ''[[Sonic Jam]]'' was released, it looked like it was solidified at 16, but with the ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' era, his age is now listed as 15.

'''''Sonic Battle''''' is a 4 player isometric fighting game based on the ''Sonic Adventure'' era characters, differing heavily from ''[[Sonic Championship|Sonic the Fighters]]'', the first Sonic fighting game. It had a single player story mode which received a great deal of praise from fans; not taking itself too seriously, while at the same time doing a lot to flesh out characters' personalities.

The story centered around the ancient mechanoid [[Emerl]]. Emerl could be upgraded, but it was long and tedious to do this, which some gamers found to detract from the game. He gains XPs from each fight, but about 10 fights would need to be completed to gain a new move.

It is also the first Sonic game to feature swearing - in Japan, [[Rouge]] calls [[Eggman]] a "bastard" for hacking into a computer before she did. The Japanese version actually has an English translation in it which contains the swearing. When the game was released in the US the dialogue was altered.

''Sonic Battle''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> storyline was loosely adapted for TV in episodes 45 and 46 of ''[[Sonic X]]'', entitled '''[[Sonic Battle - Face Off!!]]''' and '''[[Sonic Battle - Finale!!]]''' respectively. Its plot was also heavily referenced in the 2008 ''Sonic'' game ''[[Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]''.

==Gameplay==
Battles are fought in 3D arenas with up to 4 players. Each character has a set of attacks and abilities. The majority of attacks are performed with the {{B}} button, including the combos (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Attack), Air Attack, Upper Attack (used to knock opponents straight up), Heavy Attack (used to knock opponents away), and Aim Attack (used to home in on an opponent after the Heavy Attack). The {{A}} button is used to jump, and the {{L}} button lets the player block attacks, or replenish health if the button is held.

The playable characters also have unique special moves, the three types being Shot, Power, and Set. Shot moves are projectiles which can damage an opponent from a distance. Power moves can deal damage quickly in a single move. Trap moves generally involve using a type of bomb to surprise-attack the enemy. However, only a limited number of special moves can be selected. Shot, Power, and Trap must be allocated to three slots: Ground, Air, and Defend. The special move you set to Ground will be used when you press {{R}} on the ground. The move you set to Air will be used when you press {{R}} in mid-air. The last slot, Defend, has a different function; When you set a certain type of special move to Defend, then every time an enemy uses the same type of special to attack you, you'll automatically block it.

Each player has a health bar and an "Ichikoro Gauge". When health is completely depleted, the player is KO'd and loses one life (in a survival match) or the one who KO'd them gets a point (in a KO match). The Ground, Air, and Defend settings are chosen at the beginning of the match, and every time the player respawns. As a player takes damage, blocks attacks, or heals, the Ichikoro Gauge fills up. When it is full, the next special move the player does will instantly KO anyone it hits. However, if they chose to defend against that type of special, or successfully block, their Ichikoro Gauge will be filled instantly. Players healing damage will also slowly fill up their Ichikoro Gauge, but are still vulnerable to attacks.

===Battling with Emerl===
[[File:Emerl battle giant.png|thumb|right|200px|Emerl, the Gizoid, forms the basis for ''Sonic Battle's'' story.]]
The main gimmick of the game is called the Skill Capture system. Emerl can imitate the actions and attacks of every other character. He starts out with slow, incomplete captures of [[Sonic]]'s abilities, which serve as the default moves. As the game is played, the abilities of other characters are recorded as Skill Cards. After each fight, certain skills are captured this way, one card per character per fight (so if Emerl fought [[Tails]], he would get a Tails data card, and if he fought Sonic, he would get a Sonic data card.) The capturable actions consist of not only the attacks and special moves each character performs, but their individual abilities in running, jumping, mid-air actions, and the like. These can be allocated to their corresponding slots in Emerl's ability list, and doing so gives Emerl the new moves to use in battle. (Note: What the charaters do ingame does not determine what the Skill Card will be.) Sometimes you will get a rare skill such as one of the skills on the third page of Emerl's skill-edit list (ex: fight pose, color 1, attack support). There are 309 skill cards to collect in all, though the rarest can't be acquired by fighting combatants in normal battles. Emerl's ultimate battle cards can only be earned through Tails' virtual training in the final chapter of Story Mode. Secret character-centric abilities can only be obtained via passwords.

However, all these abilities cannot be used simultaneously. A limit is placed on the amount of non-default Skill Cards that can be used, in the form of skill points. Each card has a certain number of stars shown on the corner, and for each star, five skill points must be available to use on it. The total number of required skill points of all the allocated Skill Cards cannot exceed the current maximum of skill points Emerl has accumulated. Like the Skill Cards themselves, the skill point maximum is increased slightly with each battle, to a maximum of 500.

Since Emerl is powered by the [[Chaos Emeralds]], there are cutscenes in the Story Mode episodes in which the Emeralds are used to enhance Emerl's abilities. Each Emerald raises the skill point maximum by 10, a rather large amount considering that most of the time, individual battles raise it by 1-5 (depending on performance). The player can choose to replay a Story Mode episode after it's been completed, but the Skill Card/Point data is still saved. Oddly enough, the skill point maximum is raised at the Chaos Emerald cutscene every time the player reaches them. This means the same Story Mode episode can be repeated to raise Emerl's skill points faster than normal.

===Mini Games===

In addition to the principal Story Mode with overworld exploration and battle arena fights, there are a number of other game modes available in ''Sonic Battle'' for single or multiplayer (by connecting the [[Game Boy Advance]] with up to 3 others via a link cable). These include "Battle", "Challenge", and "Training" modes, where one can specify the specific characters, opponents, and arenas to spar in, as well as a selection of 2D mini games largely unrelated to the fighting motif. These include:
