'''''Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed''''' was announced on April 30, 2012. It is the sequel to ''[[Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing]]'' and was directed by Gareth Wilson, the former lead designer of ''[[wikipedia:Blur (racing game)|Blur]]'', a similar racing game that also uses power-ups as a prominent feature. It was released on the consoles Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PS Vita in late 2012, Steam and 3DS in early 2013, and iOS and Android in early 2014. The game will be released in Japan on PS3 and Wii U on May 15, 2014.

===Gameplay===
The game's sur-name comes from its new transforming vehicle system, which allows players to traverse land, sea, and sky by transforming their vehicles mid-race via transform gates into cars, boats, and planes, allowing for much more varied tracks. Each vehicle type handles differently to simulate the differences between the environments (for example roads for cars versus water for boats). The courses also change with different features during each lap, usually changing the routes traveled on during the race, so the courses are always evolving during the race.

==Characters==
The game has characters from several of Sega's previous franchises making their debut in the ''All-Stars Racing'' series, including [[sega:Golden Axe|Gilius Thunderhead]] and [[sega:Skies of Arcadia|Vyse]] who both were cut from the previous title's roster. They were chosen along with new Sega franchise characters and characters from Non-Sega franchises with additional characters planned for DLC. The two Non-Sega characters included are Ralph from the Walt Disney movie [[wikipedia:Wreck-it Ralph|Wreck-it Ralph]] who is in every version, and real professional NASCAR racer [[wikipedia:Danica Patrick|Danica Patrick]], who is in every version except the mobile versions. Revealed through hacking, there also exists additional characters such as characters from the [[sega:Football_Manager_2012|Football Manager]] series, [[sega:Shogun:_Total_War|Shogun: Total War]] series, as well as an appearance from another non-Sega property, [[wikipedia:Team Fortress 2|Team Fortress 2]]. These characters were officially revealed as exclusive characters for the PC version via a trailer released on January 17th 2013. While they are for the PC version, they appear on the disc for the console versions as well. Ryo Hazuki was announced for the newly revealed mobile versions of the game.
'''''Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (PartnerNET build)''''' is a early version of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 4|Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1]]'' which was released on Microsoft Xbox Live PartnerNET service. It contains many differences to the final game and includes different level designs and music changes. The iPhone/iPad port of ''Sonic the Hedgehog 4'' shares strong simularities to this build.

==Leak==
In February of 2010, a build of ''Sonic 4: Episode 1'' was submitted to Xbox Live Arcade's PartnerNET service, where developers are given access to upcoming downloadable titles for testing purposes. Soon after, screenshots, music and progressively more gameplay footage were leaked to the Internet. Eventually a playthrough of the entire game had been leaked. In response to the leak, PartnerNET shut down for a night. The build was controversial, due to it containing "floaty" physics speculated to be due to its using the ''[[Sonic Rush]]'' engine, poor animations, and criticized level design such as gimmick-based Acts that were disliked by most fans.

On May 20, 2010, SEGA announced that, due to fan input, the game would be delayed until later in 2010, in order to extend the development of the game. They have stated in game magazines and on GameSpot's ''On The Spot'' that this was specifically done to allow various fan requests (since the game was leaked) to be implemented, including more momentum-based level designs and improved physics closer to the [[Mega Drive]] titles.

==General Differences==
* No way to progress to the next act without using the Level Select screen.
* Level select screen uses pictures of levels instead of a landscape.
*Incomplete Title Screen animation - Sonic appears in the emblem without rising out of it first.
*Incomplete title card animations - the blue zigzag design to the left doesn't move.
*Several other graphical effects are missing. Sonic's "wheel-of-feet" animation only appears when Sonic is at top speed, and Sonic lacks his glossier shading from the final build. No motion blur effects are present in this build.
*After passing an End-of-Act signpost, Sonic hits an invisable wall at the edge of the screen which is not present in the final build.

==Music Differences==
Most of the music is identical to the final, but there were a few changes:
*Casino Street 2 has a completely different song. It also lacks a speed shoes remix.
*Since there was no World Map mode at the time, the level select used the menu music.
*There was no transition between Mad Gear and E.G.G. Station, so this song is absent
*Super Sonic uses the invincible BGM as he hadn't had his own theme yet.
*Lost Labyrinth Act 2 lacks a speed shoes remix as there are no speed shoes in the level.
*The drowning music is missing in this version, but the track listing shows that it once existed as track #22.
*There is no sound effect played when locking onto a homing attack target.

==Level Differences==
===[[Splash Hill Zone]]===
*The sunflowers in the background aren't fully animated; they are usually standing still.
===[[Casino Street Zone]]===
* Act 2 contained the 100,000 Point Challenge, a short score attack level in a pinball-style area. Removed in the console version.
* Act 2 had a different music track which was appropriate for the score attack level. Replaced in the console version.
===[[Lost Labyrinth Zone]]===
* Act 2 contained the controversial Mine Cart level where Sonic remained in the cart throughout the level, which controlled poorly. Removed in the console version.
* The moving wall in Act 3 was much faster and harder to complete the area compared to the final version.

===[[Mad Gear Zone]]===
* Act 2's vertical gear ride was much harder, containing red parts where the gear slowed down and eventually stopped, along with a few [[Bubbles]] badniks during the segment. Removed in both iPhone and Console final builds.

===[[E.G.G Station Zone]]===
* The final boss lacks a few moves found in the final version.
* The alert sound used at the last phase of the final boss is missing.
[[File:Colorspromo.png|right|thumb|200px|Sonic with Wisps in promotional artwork for ''[[Sonic Colours]]''.]]

'''Wisps''' are extraterrestrial creatures introduced in ''[[Sonic Colours]]''. [[Dr. Eggman]] captures the Wisps to power his interstellar theme park, and Sonic is tasked with rescuing the diminutive aliens from the mad scientist's clutches. According to information so far, there are at least seven or eight Wisps available in the game. As the player progresses, more Wisps are unlocked, which will then appear in both later and earlier stages. The Wisps may resemble jellyfishes.

==Color Power==
The small, color-coded, floating alien creatures each contain a different ability that Sonic can harness by collecting them. When a Wisp is collected, the gauge on the bottom-left corner of the screen will display which Wisp is currently active. Upon activating a Wisp's color power, the gauge will begin to deplete until the current power is entirely used up.

*'''White''' Wisps give Sonic the [[Sonic Boost]], which was first introduced in ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''. Much like in the previous game, the Sonic Boost will give Sonic and instant (but limited) burst of speed and will automatically attract any nearby [[rings]].

*'''Cyan''' Wisps give Sonic the Cyan Laser ability, which allows him to ricochet off of walls and teleport using the corresponding antennas that appear in the stage.

*'''Yellow''' Wisps give Sonic the Yellow Drill ability, which turns him into a drill. This enables the player to dig through certain surfaces that contain hidden underground rooms, paths, and pipes that can only be entered with proper precision.

*'''Orange''' Wisps give Sonic the Orange Rocket ability, which will turn him into a rocket, sending him flying directly upward. This ability also allows Sonic to reach higher areas of the stage.

*'''Pink''' Wisps give Sonic the Pink Spike Color Power, which gives him longer, pointier spikes that allow him to stick to walls as well as spindash. ('''[[Wii]] only''')

*'''Green''' Wisps give Sonic the Green Hover Color Power, which turns him into a slow-moving hovercraft, allowing him to fly through the air and find hiddem areas normally unaccessible. This ability also allows him to use the [[Light Dash|Ring Dash]]. ('''[[Wii]] only''')

*'''Blue''' Wisps give Sonic the Blue Cube Ability, which turns him into a heavy block till he hits the ground. It also creates platforms by transforming blue rings into walkable platforms, and vice versa. ('''[[Wii]] only''')

*'''Red''' Wisps turn Sonic into a fireball, similar to the [[Fire Shield]] of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 3]]''. However, unlike the Fire Shield, the Red Wisp can be used move in any direction when in mid-air. ('''[[DS]] only''')

*'''Violet''' Wisps turns Sonic into a berserker chomping anything in it's path (Wii Version), wile the other is it turns Sonic into a Ghost that can float through walls (DS Version).
'''Splash Hill Zone''' is the first level in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 4]]. Released gameplay clips show a level very similar to [[Green Hill Zone]] and [[Emerald Hill Zone]], and contains many of the same concepts, such as spinning sunflowers, [[Motobug]] [[badnik]]s and oddly shaped palm trees. The level was featured in the official trailer on Sega's website and was the only playable level in the E3 2010 demo.

The Sonic 4 level select screen (along with the name of Act 3) seems to indicate that, at least in Splash Hill, the different Acts are set at different times of the day; a similar system to ''[[Knuckles' Chaotix]]''. It was later shown that Act 3 and the Boss Act would take place at sunset.

{{quote|''A beautiful coastal area filled with rolling hills and an everlasting feeling of summer, Splash Hill Zone is the embodiment of an adventurous paradise. As Sonic races through the smooth slopes and crisp rivers, he will also witness a spectacular sunset view from the top of the hills.''|Description on the [http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.co.uk/en/ Sonic 4 site]}}
* Act 2 - High Speed Athletics
* Act 3 - Sunset Dash
* Boss - Showdown with Dr. Eggman

==Enemies==
*[[Buzzer]] - Wasp enemy, flies and fires a missile at you then keeps flying.
*[[Bubbles]] - A blue, spike-welding bubble.
*[[Newtron]] - Disappearing lizard bot.
*[[Moto Bug]] - Insect bot that rides around.
*[[Chopper]] - A piranha bot that jumps from under bridges.
}}'''Casino Street Zone''' is the second level in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 4]]. It exhibits many gameplay elements common of [[:Category:Levels with a carnival/casino theme|levels with a carnival/casino theme]]. The zone is known for the Score Attack gimmick in Act 2 of the PartnerNET build where Sonic was enclosed in a pinball area and had to get 100,000 points to proceed to the next level. This was mostly unfavoured by fans and it was later changed to an iPhone-exclusive act, with the console version recieving an entirely new Act.

On September 23, 2010, Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/sonic-the-hedgehog-4-episode-1-preview/ revealed] a trailer and some information regarding the level, as well as a few statements from [[Ken Balough]]. While this level shares a number of gameplay elements with ''[[Sonic 2]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Casino Night Zone]], Balough stated that Casino Street Zone was not inspired by any previous levels.

The new gimmick for this act appears to be playing cards which Sonic can jump on before they flip over, and even run on a moving deck of cards. In addition there are different versions of the cannons, pinball tables and rolling tunnels, as well as the [[Batbot]] and [[Crawl]] badniks from [[Sonic the Hedgehog 3|Sonic the Hedgehog 3's]] [[Carnival Night Zone]] and Casino Night Zone.

{{quote|''A bright and busy casino-inspired theme park, where shining neon lights fill the streets. Casino Street Zone is bustling with elaborate pinball areas and powerful cannons, so time your movement well to guarantee your chance of survival. If luck is on your side, why not explore for a moment and try your hand at the slots?''|Description on the [http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.co.uk/en/ Sonic 4 site]}}
This zone is known for the controversial Mine Cart gimmick that was in the second act in the PartnerNET build, which involved Sonic controlling a mine cart in the entire level. Due to responses from the fanbase, the mine cart act has since become an exclusive level in the iPhone version, and the console version will receive an entirely new act.

On August 18th 2010, Lost Labyrinth Zone was revealed on the Japanese website and later on the US site, with a slew of new screen shots. The entirety of Act 2 has been altered to use a new torch gimmick, which wasn't in the leaked beta. One screen shot showed the infamous mine cart, which is now used differently. Rather than being used in the entire act, the mine cart is now automatic, and placed at the end of the act. The removal of motion controls from the act was confirmed.
*[[Burrobot]] - Mole bots that leap from the ground and then simply move back and forth in a small area.
*[[Unidus]] - These guys look exactly like Orbinaut. They're a bit more hot-headed, though, and will fire off their shield of mines.
}}'''Lost Labyrinth Zone''' is the second level in ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 4]]''. It appears to be set underground, similar to ''[[Sonic 1]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Labyrinth Zone]].

* Act 1 - Ancient Maze of Mystery
* Act 2 - Strange Mine Cart (iPhone)
* Act 3 - Underwater Maze Escape
* Boss - Trap-Filled Ruins

==Enemies==
*[[Jaws]] - Piranha bots that troll around underwater.
*[[Bubbles]] - A blue floating bubble bot. Red spiked variations also appear.
*[[Orbinaut]] - Simple sphere bots that move back and forth very slowly. The catch is that they're circled by four spiked balls, which move in a pattern and can only be attacked for a short time.
*[[Burrobot]] - Mole bots that leap from the ground and then simply move back and forth in a small area.
*[[Unidus]] - These guys look exactly like Orbinaut. They're a bit more hot-headed, though, and will fire off their shield of mines.
The zone is known for the Score Attack gimmick in Act 2 of the PartnerNET build where Sonic was enclosed in a pinball area and had to get 100,000 points to proceed to the next level. '''Planet Wisp''' is a level in the game [[Sonic Colours]].

What has been shown of this zone so far eludes it to being a industrial level built into a mountainside, leaving plenty of room for jumps through the twisting metal around mountains. The name of the level seems to show that this is the Wisps homeworld, where [[Eggman]] must have captured them to fuel his interstellar theme park.
Effexorhttps://info.sonicretro.org/index.php?title=Wisps&diff=158967Wisps2010-08-20T19:44:46Z
Effexor:

==Color Power==

*'''Pink''' Wisps give Sonic the Pink Spike Color Power, which gives him longer, pointier spikes that allow him to stick to walls.

*'''Red''' Wisps turn Sonic into a fireball, similar to the [[Fire Shield]] of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 3]]''. However, unlike the Fire Shield, the Red Wisp can be used move in any direction when in mid-air. ('''[[DS]] only''')
*'''Cyan Wisps''', turn Sonic into a laser, which allows him to ricochet between walls.
*'''White Wisps''', give Sonic the [[Sonic Boost]], allowing for fast speed bursts which can damage enemies.

If you look carefully in the announcement trailer, you'll see other Wisps SEGA hadn't revealed yet. For example, there's a blue and violet wisp. Can be seen in 00:17 of the video. They are also revealed on the games boxart.

==Color Power==

*'''Pink''' Wisps give Sonic the Pink Spike Color Power, which gives him longer, pointier spikes that allow him to stick to walls. ('''[[Wii]] only''')

*'''Green''' Wisps turn Sonic into a slow-moving hovercraft, allowing him to fly through the air and find hiddem areas normally unaccessible. This ability also allows him to use the [[Light Dash]].

('''[[DS]] only''')
}}'''Splash Hill Zone''' is the first level in [[Sonic the Hedgehog 4]].

'''''Sonic the Hedgehog 4''''' is an upcoming [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] game scheduled for release in Fall 2010 (see "Leaking and delay" section below). It was originally codenamed ''Project Needlemouse'', after [[Mr. Needlemouse]], the name given to several early prototypes of Sonic.

The game was first announced on the GameSpot website on 9 September 2009, and will be a 2D, download-only title on [[sega:Xbox Live Arcade|Xbox Live Arcade]], [[sega:Sony PlayStation 3|PlayStation Network]], [[sega:Nintendo Wii|WiiWare]], and Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch; and will feature HD graphics on the former two platforms. It is a direct sequel to ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]'' and is set after the events of that game. It will be released in episodic format, with its storyline spread across the episodes. [[Takashi Iizuka]], who was involved in level design in [[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]] is overseeing the project, while [[Jun Senoue]] is the game's Sound Director.

On March 22, NGamer revealed that the game will have 3 Episodes, each comprising 4 Zones. [http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/ngamer-magazine-preview-confirms-game-length-special-stage] Each Zone has 4 Acts, the last of which is a boss battle with Sonic's perpetual nemesis [[Dr. Eggman]].

==Gameplay==
The game intends to replicate the feel of 16-bit era Sonic games with elements such as momentum-based physics and classic-style badniks. Each zone will feature 3 acts, similar to [[Sonic 1]]'s gameplay, along with a boss act. Further details are yet to be revealed.

==Marketing==
===First announcement and teaser===
[[File:Needlemouse Teaser emblem comparison.gif|thumb|The silhouetted emblem resembles that of the one from ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'']] On September 8, 2009, Sega revealed to GameSpot details about a new 2D Sonic game. Named Project Needlemouse after [[Mr. Needlemouse]], an early prototype of Sonic, it would be released in 2010 and feature HD graphics. GameSpot conducted [[Ken Ballough interview by Gamespot (September 8, 2009)|an interview]] with [[Sega]]'s associate brand manager, [[Ken Balough]]. Balough described the game as a response to "''old-school Sonic fans [who] have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay.''"

A {{file|Project Needlemouse Teaser.flv|teaser video}} was also released. While the video didn't include any actual gameplay, it showed Sonic racing around collecting rings, with the words "Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up." It included sound effects from early Sonic games (like the original ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]''). The video concludes with a silhouetted [[Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(16-bit)#The_Ribbon.2C_Ring.2C_and_Stars|"ribbon, ring, and stars"-style emblem]], which hides details such as the game's true name and main character (which would later be revealed as Sonic). The shape of the emblem closely resembled that of the one [[:File:Sonic1 title.png|on the original ''Sonic the Hedgehog'''s title screen]].

===Character Countdown===
On Monday, January 11, 2010, the "Project Needlemouse Character Countdown" began on the official [http://blogs.sega.com/ Sega Blogs]. This countdown would eventually reveal that Sonic is the only playable character in the game, after goals were met by the community. On Monday, a picture was released showing the names of potential playable characters. Each day that week until Friday, names would be crossed off that picture if enough fans answered Sonic-related trivia questions correctly. [[:File:Project Needlemouse Character Countdown.jpg|The list of possible characters]] included: [[Chip]], [[Charmy Bee|Charmy]], [[Shadow the Hedgehog|Shadow]], [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]], [[Vector the Crocodile|Vector]], Sonic's new friend Mr. Needlemouse, [[Shade]], [[Tikal]], [[Big the Cat]], [[Amy Rose|Amy]] and [[Froggy]].

[[File:Needlemouse Shellcracker.jpg|thumb|300px|[[Shellcracker]] concept artwork from ''Project Needlemouse'']]A bonus point could also be earned each day. If at least three bonus points were earned by the community by Friday, "something special" would also be awarded. On Friday, this was revealed to be drawn concept artwork of a [[Shellcracker]] [[badnik]] from ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2]]''
|}

All of the trivia questions had to do with the gameplay or creation of early Sonic games. This strengthened the idea that Project Needlemouse would be a game that somehow was related to the first Sonic games. In revealing that Sonic is the only character, the Sega Blog acknowledged that this was in response to "thousands of [fans] out there asking for a game where Sonic is the only playable character." Project Needlemouse would focus only on Sonic. The Shellcracker concept artwork further suggests that this game is closely related to the original Sonic games like ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' and ''Sonic the Hedgehog 2''.

===The Needlemouse Challenge: Part 2===
[[File:ConceptMotobugNeedlemouse.jpg|thumb|300px|[[Motobug]] concept artwork from ''Project Needlemouse''.]]
On January 27, 2010, the official Sega Blog announced the [http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/01/27/project-needlemouse-community-challenge-2-new-concept-art-and-a-very-special-reward/ second and final competition]. This competition was realized because of [[User:Trakker|Trakker]]'s magnificent artwork of [[Slicer]], which was in the same style as the official [[Shellcracker]] artwork released. Because of how impressed Sega was with it, they started the 2nd competition, which took a different path than the first one. It asked blog visitors to submit their own concept art of [[badnik]]s. Along with the competition, concept art of a [[Motobug]] was shown.

''Instead, you shot one hundred arrows, fired two hundred cannons, launched multiple air-to-land missiles, detonated at least three warheads, and sent the ship splintering into the air in a grand explosion of planks and pieces – of what used to be a target – as they fell, smoking, to the ground. (Note: The term ‘blew it out of the water’ just wasn’t accurate.)"''
|}

The challenge was completed, and Sega announced the next week would be Hedgehog Week, which would start on GroundHog Day, "Hedgehog Day," and would be a week full of big reveals and possibilities to earn prizes.

===Hedgehog Week===

Hedgehog Week started on Hedgehog Day. (Groundhog Day in US) The reason this day was chosen was because it was the original release date for [[Sonic 3]]. The 1st things revealed on Hedgehog Day were as promised, 2 new pieces of concept art: a palm tree and a sunflower, both reminiscent of [[Sonic 1]]. The bonus turned out to be a short clip of music from the new game, which accompanied the "Happy Hedgehog Day" banner on Sega's official website.

This particular blog post was also where the prizes would be decided by post numbers. The big prize was a copy of [[Sonic 3]] that was signed by one of its original developers, [[Takashi Iizuka]], with post #333. Other prizes included ''"a Sonic & Metal Sonic Wall Scroll (Featuring classic Sonic – who has black eyes), a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog Clock, a Sonic Towel and more!"'' Most winners were in 50 post increments. (50,100,150,etc)

Sega said not to confuse the music as the big surprise, and stated that the surprise would be revealed on Thursday, February 4th, 2010.
===Official unveiling===

On February 4, 2010 at midnight PST, the official title of Project Needlemouse, ''Sonic the Hedgehog 4'', was revealed on the Gamespot website. It was accompanied by an interview with Sega's Ken Balough and a trailer containing a few seconds of gameplay footage.

==Leaking and delay==

[[File:S4 Development Level Select.JPG|thumb|250px|right|The level select in this [[:Category: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Game Development Images|leaked image]] displays the 4 zones featured in Episode 1. [[Splash Hill Zone]] is currently highlighted.]]

In February, a build of Episode 1 was submitted to Xbox Live Arcade's PartnerNET service, where developers are given access to upcoming downloadable titles for testing purposes. Soon after, screenshots, music and progressively more gameplay footage were leaked to the Internet. Eventually a playthrough of the entire game had been leaked, and [[Sonic Retro]], who had already banned leaked material when more than they approved of had been released, responded by banning ''Sonic 4'' discussion for several days. As well as this, PartnerNET shut down for a night. Other websites also made efforts to crack down on leaks, such as banning posting of leaked content.

Releases for the iPhone and iPod Touch were also announced, finally ending speculation of the 4th unknown platform, although it was leaked months before when images were found in the website's source code. It was also revealed that the iPhone platform will receive two extra levels, which will most likely be the Mine Cart and Pinball gimmicks in [[Lost Labyrinth Zone]] Act 2 and [[Casino Street Zone]] Act 2, which were heavily criticized in the leaked gameplay footage. This is thought to have been done because such levels fit the iPhone controls more. Fans have speculated (and many hope) that the console versions will receive new non-gimmick levels to replace them.

A video on YouTube from E3 dated June 11 has led some fans to believe that physics changes have already been made to the game, although Sega staff have stated that the build at E3 was not the most recent one.

==Birthday Contest==
In June, SEGA [http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/06/23/win-a-free-trip-to-tokyo-the-sonic-4-birthday-contest-has-begun/ announced] a contest to celebrate Sonic's 19th anniversary where people would create videos with the winner going to Tokyo to see the finished version of Episode 1. Running only in the United States and United Kingdom, 10 videos from each country were put up for voting, two UK entries included Sonic Stadium staff members [[Dreadknux]] and [[T-Bird]]. The voting system was intended to allow one vote per day, however people found workarounds to allow multiple voting by clearing their browser's cookies and cache due to poor site coding. On July 16th, SEGA suspended the voting.

==Criticism==
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been criticised due to the design and content of the game. Some people believe that it is not a true sequel to the classic games, due to Episode I's content being largely based on that of previous games with minor changes, and level design that features speed boosters in every level ''(a staple of Dimps' level design with their previous Sonic games)'' and object placement that forces the use of the [[Homing Attack]]. The latter is a move that some fans do not feel belongs in a 2D game, particularly not one based on the classics and set before its debut in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. The music has also been criticised, due to it featuring low-quality synths and drum samples (the latter from ''Sonic 2'', not the more advanced ones from ''Sonic 3'') that vary little between songs.

A highly controversal item is Sonic's design, which is the modern style model that debuted in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' and has since received refinements until its most recent state in ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]''. Many fans believe that the classic Sonic design should have been used, and a [http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/bring-the-classic-sonic-to-sonic-the-hedgehog-4.html petition] was set up for SEGA to include the different version. However, in a magazine [[Takashi Iizuka]] said that the classic style wasn't returning, as all games since ''Sonic Adventure'' have featured Sonic in his modern design.
'''''Sonic 2 Retro Remix''''' is a large-scale hack of ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2]]'' by [[DNXDelta]] and [[Thorn]]. The game is based around a mission system akin to that of ''Super Mario 64'', with each level containing time attack, score attack, and scavenger hunting missions that award [[Chaos Emeralds]], which in turn allow the player to progress through barricades in the overworld. The hack has been praised for its mission system, layouts, art and new moves, but criticized for its difficulty.

==Controls==
While the {{A}} button no longer functions as a jump button, because it has been given new functions, all other controls from ''Sonic the Hedgehog 2'' are available, as well as:
* Curl into a [[Spin Attack]]: Press {{A}} in midair to enter a Spin Attack.
* Jump Dash: Press {{B}} or {{C}} in midair while in a Spin Attack to dash forward.
* Wall Kick: In midair, press {{Left}} or {{Right}} in the direction of a wall while pressing or holding {{A}} to stick to the wall for a second, then jump to kick off of it. You can chain wall kicks together provided that you do not stick to a wall too long and fall off.
* Mid-air Action: After being catapulted by a [[spring]], seesaw, or similar device, press {{A}} plus a direction to greatly adjust your trajectory.
* Exit level: Pause the game and press {{A}} to exit an act and return to the overworld.
In ''[[Sonic 3]]'', ''[[Sonic & Knuckles]]'' and ''[[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]]'', the '''Special Stages''' (sometimes known as '''[[Blue Sphere]]''', the name of the standalone game featuring only such special stages) are used to collect [[Chaos Emeralds]] and [[Super Emeralds]] in the game. There are seven Chaos Emeralds, seven Super Emeralds and one Special Stage for each one. To enter the Special Stage, a [[giant ring]] must be found and then jumped into. These rings are well hidden - usually in secret rooms. Luckily, there are giant rings in every act, and there are actually more rings available than there are Special Stages, so there will be more than enough chances to get the Chaos Emeralds.

Humorously, the "Get Blue Spheres" message was "Get Blue Balls" for a time during development.[http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=9334]

==Gameplay==
All the Special Stages are in the form of a gigantic globe that will turn as it is walked on. The color of the globe's checkered floor differs in each stage. There are individual intersections, or points which in the character can turn to either side. To turn press {{left}} or {{right}} on the directional pad when you come to a point. It's best to hold {{left}} or {{right}} when going between points to turn rather than just tapping it. It is also possible to jump at any time, but it's not possible to turn in mid-air. The screen will speed up as the number of blue balls available decrease. The length of the special stages are at a fixed length and when you reach the end of it the level will start you at the other side so it is not possible to walk of the side of the level.

Some sections of the level are empty but most have something on them. There are red spheres, blue spheres, white spheres with red stars on them, gold spheres (in Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Blue Sphere only), and gold rings. The goal of the level is to avoid red spheres at all costs and collect blue spheres. If a red sphere is touched the level immediately ends. If a blue sphere is touched it will turn to a red sphere. If a white sphere with a red star on it is touched it will cause the character to bounce backward and he will continue to move backwards until {{up}} is pressed on the directional pad. Red star spheres are bumpers that often seal off masses of red spheres. If a gold sphere is touched the player will be launched, like when touching a spring in the Zones, five spheres forward or backward (depending on what direction you're moving). The number of blue spheres remaining is shown in the top left corner. Once every one of these are collected and there are no blue spheres remaining in the Special Stage, all the spheres disappear and the player is rewarded the Chaos Emerald.

[[Rings]] are sometimes found at the beginning of a Special Stage, but usually they are obtained by transforming groups of spheres into them. This is done by touching the blue spheres on the outside of a mass of blue spheres that are at least 3 by 3 in size. All the spheres will then change into rings, although if some of the inside spheres were red then this may not work, depending on the size of the formation. This is also possible in a formation of the appropriate size in which some of the spheres on the perimeter are already red. This sounds tricky but soon becomes second nature. It is never necessary to collect rings but it is usually best to do so if possible, both to eliminate a mass of red spheres and because rings give a point reward at the end of a Special Stage. Collected rings will not add to your ring tally once you exit the stage, however.

At the end of a Special Stage 100 points per ring are added to the score, even if the Chaos Emerald was not collected. If all the rings in the level are collected a [[Perfect Bonus]] of 50,000 points will be rewarded, which will result in one free life. Collecting 50 or more rings is also worth a continue (This is indicated by a tune being played along with a sprite of Sonic dancing after the point tally) and collecting 100 rings (when possible) will earn you and extra life (This is indicated by a sound similar to when you lose rings in a normal level). The second time a Special Stage is entered the second special stage will start regardless if the first Chaos Emerald is collected or not. The only way to collect Emeralds missed is to go through all the available stages until it laps back to the first levels. Once a Chaos Emerald is collected in a stage this level will never appear again.
==Special Stage in ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles''==
When playing ''[[Sonic 3 & Knuckles]]'', all giant rings will now flash rainbow colors, and instead of transporting you to a Special Stage, they transport you to the Emerald throne room of [[Hidden_Palace_Zone_%28SK%29|Hidden Palace Zone]]. All the Chaos Emeralds collected in the ''Sonic 3'' levels will disappear, but for each one collected, a gray Super Emerald will be beamed down onto a pedestal in the room corresponding to the emerald collected previously. After jumping into a giant ring in ''Sonic & Knuckles'' for the first time, your character can no longer go "Super" as all collected Chaos Emeralds are no longer in your possession. While in this room, every time this room is entered by jumping into a giant ring, the remaining Special Stages of ''Sonic 3'' can be played by jumping on an empty pedestal. If you collect a Chaos Emerald in that stage, a gray Super Emerald will appear on the pedestal. If you jump on a gray Super Emerald instead you will play a ''Sonic & Knuckles'' Special Stage corresponding to the pedestal that the Emerald was on, and if the stage is completed successfully a Super Emerald will be rewarded and the gray Super Emerald will become colored in. It is also possible to exit the room in Hidden Palace without playing any Special Stage by stepping on the spot your character get beamed down onto.

The goal is to collect all seven Super Emeralds, although doing so may require playing through more than seven Special Stages if the Chaos Emeralds in ''Sonic 3'' were not collected first. However, Super Emeralds cannot be collected until the ''Sonic & Knuckles'' levels are entered. If all the Super Emeralds the are collected, the [[Master Emerald]] will start glowing and this room will become inaccessible. Any future giant rings touched will reward fifty rings instead.
