Sprite mappings
From Sonic Retro
This teeny-tiny article needs some work. You can help us by expanding it.
A sprite map, in 16-bit Sonic games, is essentially a list of Mega Drive VDP sprites and their locations relative to the object itself; i.e. a map of sprites. One sprite map defines one frame of animation. A separate structure, usually referred to as the animation script, links several sprite maps together to form a smooth animation.
