- Back to: Sonic Mega Collection (prototype; 2002-08-15).
General comparisons
A "Licensed by Nintendo" screen is displayed before the Sega logo. The final would have this string appear on the title screen instead.
The title screen is different than that in the final release, featuring no animations other than the blinking "PRESS START" text and having a simpler copyright notice at the bottom of the screen. The title screen also takes longer to display than the final, and plays the full title theme from the final's rolling demo rather than an abridged title theme.
The rolling demo is not yet implemented, thus the the game will display the logo screens again if it is left on the title screen for a while.
The prompt for creating a new save file on the Memory Card was retranslated in the final. The default option is "No" in this prototype while the final defaults to "Yes".
The notification after saving later received a slight reword.
The starfield displayed when loading menus hasn't been implemented yet, so all loading screens are blank.
The main menu is much like the final game, though the menu controls show different button graphics than the final. Menu descriptions at the bottom of the screen scroll more slowly, menu transitions are slower than the final, and the music does not fade out when transitioning between menus.
The Games menu lists Sonic CD, which would be removed from the final game. Locked games are listed as a string of dots rather than "? ? ? ?" in the final.
The cheat codes to select different revisions of Sonic the Hedgehog don't work yet. REV00 is loaded by default.
The option to save and exit is listed as "Game Log Recorded & Exit" instead of "SAVE & EXIT". All options use the same description text.
Expression error: Unexpected * operator.

The credits aren't implemented yet, simply displaying a blank screen until the user presses a button.
All covers and illustrations do not display page numbers in the top-right corner of the screen. Additionally, the illustration galleries have fewer illustrations for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Eggman, and are not accompanied with descriptions.
The intro section for the cover scans hasn't been implemented yet.
The menu choices for Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic Super Special and miscellaneous covers are not listed in all uppercase letters.
The Image characters on the cover of Sonic Super Special #7 haven't been censored yet.
The main descriptions for the miscellaneous illustrations do not describe the illustrations themselves, but are rather brief blurbs about Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Advance.
Two listings for the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA, "Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie 1" and "Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie 2" are listed. These slots were meant for the two parts of the OVA, which was a 2-part anime in Japan. This was most likely going to be separated like the original Japanese version. There are no files found in the ISO pertaining to the OVA however. The final replaced these listings with the opening and ending FMVs from Sonic CD.
Additionally, the "History of Sonic" video is named the "Sonic Secret File" in this prototype. Neither of the videos can be viewed, as they simply display a black screen until the user presses a button.
Save data
Save data created by the prototype lacks a banner and has "savetest" for its description. It is also 3 blocks, whereas the final's save data is 2 blocks.
