History of Sonic the Hedgehog is a gallery of images found in Sonic Jam, accessible through the history museum building in the Sonic World area. The gallery describes most Sonic games released between 1990 and 1997, and includes box covers and screenshots. Some events and sponsorship deals are also mentioned, as well as the Sonic hedgehog gene.

While the broad timeline of events is correct, many of the release dates are incorrect, and some PAL Sega Master System releases are mislabeled as being for "Latin America". Notably this is the first known claim that the original Sonic the Hedgehog was released on June 23, 1991, a statement that went on to propagate through Sonic-related media for decades to come, and even dictate the releases of anniversary-related works such as Sonic Origins in 2022 (when in reality the original game was available earlier in the month).

Outside the language difference and formatting, there are a number of minor differences between the original Japanese and overseas versions, with some Japanese-only details omitted in the translated versions.
