Characters

SonicClassic2 Character Victory Sprites.png
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic has all his main abilities from Sonic 3 and Sonic CD: the Spin Dash, Insta-Shield, and Super Peel Out. Additionally, he can perform a highly modified version of the Drop Dash by pressing  S  midair, relying on the speed of the player and the below terrain. He is also the only character able to use shield abilities.

Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails retains his moveset from Sonic 3, being able to fly in the air and swim in water. However, unlike that game, Tails is unable to damage enemies and bosses with his tails when in flight.

Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles also retains his moveset from Sonic 3, able to glide, climb, and bust through walls that are impenetrable by other characters. His jump height has also been lowered.

Fang the Sniper
Fang features a unique moveset inspired by Yoshi's Island,[2] and is by far the most complex of the playable characters. His jump height is much higher than the other playable characters, and he cannot use the Spin Attack or Spin Dash at will. He is able to hover by pressing  D  when descending from a jump (granting him a small amount of height) and can be used three times consecutively. When holding  S , Fang aims his popgun up and down automatically, which fires when the button is released. He can also move while aiming, with  🡨  or  🡪  reversing his aim direction. Some Zones have unique starting points for Fang, with their designs tailored to his playstyle, and is unable to be selected in multiplayer matches.

Zones

SonicClassic2 fangame CCZ1screen.png
Crystal Coves Zone
The game's first Zone, drawing heavy inspiration from Emerald Hill Zone. Palm trees, corkscrews, and totem poles litter the uppers areas of the terrain, while the caverns below feature gigantic crystals and waterfalls far off in the distance.
SonicClassic2 fangame FFZ2screen.png
Factory Frenzy Zone
An industrial factory, complete with viscous green goop, various crushing hazards, and partial flooding.
SonicClassic2 fangame RRZ2screen.png
Rustic Ruins Zone
A Zone consisting of ancient, temple-like structures built atop huge, torch-lit caverns. Many large, green, diamond-shaped crystals can be found lying on their side, reminiscent similar motifs in Hidden Palace Zone. Of all the game’s Zones, Rustic Ruins underwent the fewest visual changes during development.
SonicClassic2 fangame FrFrZ1screen.png
Frozen Fractal Zone
An snow-themed Zone with a central gimmick involving switch-powered flames which temporarily melt icy terrain into water for fifteen seconds, allowing brief access across previously-frozen areas.
SonicClassic2 fangame CaCh1screen.png
Carnival Chaos Zone
A carnival-themed Zone and the rough halfway point of the game, filled with the usual trappings of flippers, bumpers, and slot machines. The Zone also features new interactive objects like the Love Tester (a potential nod to the cut Sonic Mania feature of the same name, in turn based on the 1972 Sega arcade machine), firing characters in a random direction when entered.
SonicClassic2 fangame JJZ1screen.png
Jupiter Jungle Zone
A jungle Zone at sunset, featuring gigantic trees and a dense layer of vines and foliage decorating the background. Thematically, the Zone is heavily inspired by Meta Junglira Zone in both visual appearance and stage gimmicks.
SonicClassic2 fangame MMZ2screen.png
Murky Mines Zone
A Zone set in a decrepit, abandoned mine, featuring switch-operated flame doors which light up the constantly darkening area. The Zone's name and general concept are based on Mercury Mines Zone, a cut concept from the original Sonic Classic.
SonicClassic2 fangame TTZ1screen.png
Talus Tempest Zone
A water Zone that seems to take place in a gigantic coral reef. It introduces clam-themed Springs which bounce characters up when stepped upon, but conversely damage players caught in their closing jaws.
SonicClassic2 fangame FlFo1screen.png
Flying Fortress Zone
Heavily based on both Wing Fortress Zone and Flying Battery Zone, this Zone sees players infiltrate one of Dr. Eggman's airships. At the Zone's conclusion, the airship escapes into outer space, eventually docking at Dr. Eggman's moon base.

Space Chase Zone
The final Zone of the game takes place on the moon. Without Earth's oxygen, players begin drowning; areas with breathable oxygen are marked with a light blue tint. In the last Act, players eventually climb into the center of the Death Egg to face off with the final boss.

Music and sound

Sonic Classic 2 features three separate soundtracks, each of which can be toggled between in the Options menu. Soundtrack A features music by Sean Evans, with additional contributions from NoveltyMan. Soundtrack B (Power Team Edition) was a collaborative effort by music group 1200 Power, whose members include ScrewStache, DJ Chidow, DDProd, S. K. Fusion, and Vadell Gabriel. Soundtrack C was composed by Karl Brueggemann, and was completed in 2013.[3] Brueggemann's music was used during the majority of the game's development.[4]

History

Development

Sonic Classic 2 first began development in early to mid 2011, with a video preview being demonstrated by Hez that July.[6]

Along with the 11 Zones featured in the current release, Sonic Classic 2 is planned to receive one additional Zone after launch. These additions include a true final boss for collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds, as well as playable remakes of the campaigns from Sonic Classic, Sonic 1, and Sonic 2. The current status of these features' development is unknown.
