Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood/Development

From Sonic Retro

Back to: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood went through many ideas and changes during the development process. What follows is a collection of items related to the game's development.

Production history

In 2006, BioWare started developing their own handheld game before they got the Sonic license. The team at BioWare were already fans of the series and so they wanted to expand the storyline of the franchise. They wanted to stay true to the series roots while also taking it in new directions.[1]

Music

BioWare (the main creators of Sonic Chronicles) had a full, originally composed soundtrack made for the game. However, before release they had to pull the stage music out for a variety of legal reasons. Under pressure of this, along with time constraints, BioWare took pre-existing MIDI files (a music composition format) of music from earlier Sonic games from different Sonic fan websites, and added them as the Stage music. The Sonic Community has criticized this decision greatly. Time constraints also made them use an unfinished custom soundfont (a variety of instruments in one file). Because of this, some percussion instruments in certain songs are missing. An example of this can be found in the song "Nocturne."

Early 2D intro

In December 2021, Jonathan Cooper uploaded various early assets on Twitter, including an unused 2D opening cinematic that was very different from the final game's opening. A reel showcasing the development of the game's art and animations including WIP sketches of the unused cinematic were uploaded on December 18[2], while the cinematic itself and a line test were both uploaded three days later, on December 21[3][4].
