Scrap Brain Zone is the sixth Zone in the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic finally arrives at Dr. Eggman's industrial headquarters, where many deadly traps await.

Overview
Scrap Brain Zone is a trap-filled industrial level with much dangerous machinery such as trap floors, flame vents, electrical conductors, and disappearing and rotating platforms. The first Act has Sonic traverse across the outer walls of the fortress, where the player can see grimy, depressing towers expel smoke into the sky, and obstacles such as crushing blocks are abound. Wheels that Sonic can ride in can be reversed by pressing a nearby button, allowing the player to take an alternate route.
Act 2 takes the player inside the fortress itself, where spinning flywheels and conveyor belts will carry Sonic along, and buzzsaws and swinging spike balls will make things all the more dangerous for the hedgehog. This Act also features transport tubes that will send Sonic to different areas when entered into, though one of them holds a secret: the exit of the third transport tube encountered if the player takes the lower path at the start of the Act will suddenly activate if the player re-enters it with at least 50 Rings, leading to a secret shortcut to the end of the Act.
At the end of Act 2, Eggman appears behind a force field and pushes a button which drops Sonic into Act 3. This Act is essentially a fourth Act of Labyrinth Zone with a different palette, and has no encounter with Eggman. Instead, it leads directly to the Final Zone. All of the Badniks that apppeared in Labyrinth Zone, as well as many of its obstacles, are featured in this Act.
All throughout this Zone, it is not possible to enter the Special Stage as the Giant Rings that lead to it never appear. This is because part of the VRAM area normally used by the Giant Ring is used by the animated smoke in the background. A Giant Ring can be added by hand, but it will use garbled tiles whenever the smoke animates.
Originally, Scrap Brain Zone was named "Clock Work Zone", displayed as "Clock ork Zone" on the title card due to the lack of a letter W in the used font.

Enemies
Caterkiller — Returning from Marble Zone, its body is protected by spikes. Jump on its head to avoid taking damage. | |
