Freedom Fighters are a name used for various groups featured in different pieces of Sonic the Hedgehog media. Usually depicted as resistance movements fighting against Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog is often seen fighting alongside them, either as a member or an external supporter.

In some pieces of media such as Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the term "freedom fighter" is merely an expression used by characters such as Sonic and Tails to describe themselves. However, in most pieces of media, such as DiC's Sonic the Hedgehog animated series (SatAM), Sonic the Comic, Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and Sonic Underground, the Freedom Fighters are either a designated group or a series of multiple different groups.

As the Freedom Fighters were largely a creation of western license holders and not Sega themselves, they have not been featured in any Sonic games aside from Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Mega Collection Plus, where Archie Comics' depictions of them appear in the comic book scans featured as bonus material. However, depictions of the group resembling their SatAM incarnation were set to appear in the cancelled games Sonic-16 and Sonic Mars, and a similar concept eventually emerged in Sonic Forces in the form of a group known as the Resistance.

Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)

Knothole Village's Freedom Fighters

There are multiple Freedom Fighter groups in SatAM, but the series mainly follows the exploits of one group that resides in Knothole Village, a hidden village located in an area known as the Great Forest. This group was formed after Dr. Robotnik took over the city of Mobotropolis and rechristened it Robotropolis, banishing its leader, King Acorn, into a dimension known as the Void in the process. This group of Freedom Fighters most likely included the majority of Knothole's citizens, as all of them were refugees from Mobotropolis, and thus motivated to fight against Robotnik in order to reclaim their home. This Freedom Fighter group included SatAM's core cast of Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine Depardieu and Rotor Walrus, and was led by Princess Sally Acorn, King Acorn's daughter.

Lower Mobius' Freedom Fighters

An another group of Freedom Fighters, residing within an underground city powered by a large crystal, is featured in the episode Warp Sonic. Griff, a member of this group, initially drove a wedge between them and Knothole's Freedom Fighters by stealing a power rock from the Lake of Rings to power the city's crystal. Sonic, however, eventually let Griff keep half of it, and the two Freedom Fighter groups departed on good terms.

The Wolf Pack

The Wolf Pack was a Freedom Fighter group introduced in the episode Cry of the Wolf. They originally lived on Mobius' surface in harmony with nature, but most of their culture was destroyed during Robotnik's coup. Only five members, including their leader's daughter, Lupe, were left unroboticized. These survivors lived in hiding within an underground shrine until Knothole's Freedom Fighters found them, helped them fight back against Robotnik's machines and eventually allied with them.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

In some episodes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic refers to himself and Tails as freedom fighters. Sally Acorn makes an appearance in Sonic Christmas Blast, but is not referred to as a freedom fighter.

Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics)

Archie Comics also adapted the Freedom Fighters when adapting the plot points from the TV series into the comic of the same name.. They had the same agenda in the comic as they did in the TV series, but after Robotnik's "death", the king returned and the kingdom has been reestablished in Knothole. The status quo then changed from a group of ragtag rebels to soldiers fighting a terrorist owning a small portion of the globe. However before the term Freedom Fighters began to leave as a term for the comic's fighters and protagonists they had over time included more characters such as Mina Mongoose who is now a former freedom fighter but had been one nonetheless.

Sonic the Comic

When Sonic and several of his friends were cast six months into the future by Doctor Robotnik, the evil genius used their absence from the time stream to conquer Mobius utterly. Upon his return, Sonic quickly established an underground cell of Freedom Fighters. Initially comprised of only himself, Tails, Johnny Lightfoot and Porker Lewis, characters such as Amy Rose, Tekno the Canary and Shortfuse the Cybernik were added to the team in later stories.

The Freedom Fighters initially operated out of a subterranean base in the Emerald Hill Zone that was overseen by the Kintobor Computer, a digitized replica of the mind of Ovi Kintobor, Doctor Robotnik's former self. Eventually they lost this base in an attack by Robotnik, however, and were forced to roam the planet disguised as a traveling circus. After Robotnik's defeat and the subsequent liberation of Mobius in issue #100, the Freedom Fighters were able to return to the Emerald Hill Zone base.

Freedom Fighter Sects

As shown through the different Sonic the Hedgehog series, there are a number of Freedom Fighter sects operating around Mobius.
