Final Haunt is one of five possible sixth levels of Shadow the Hedgehog; in the game's branching path structure, it follows from taking a highly heroic, G.U.N.-aligned path through the previous levels. Striking right into the heart of the Black Arms home, Shadow and Sonic tear through the central caverns of the Black Comet - yawning caves crammed full of fearsome alien defenders.

Interestingly, the bosses for this level are the same as G.U.N. Fortress, despite being in opposite locations.

Story

After heeding Maria's plea and defeating the Artificial Chaos at Lost Impact, or defeating Sonic the Hedgehog in a race for the cyan Chaos Emerald in Space Gadget, Shadow and Sonic are seen walking on the deck of the Space Colony ARK. Sonic points out the Black Comet flying past, and Shadow senses that the travelling worldlet is the location of Black Doom and his invading army. Shadow and Sonic apparently used Tails' shuttle to fly across, where It's time for a showdown on the Arms' home turf. Sonic wants Shadow to help him find Black Doom at the core of the comet; the two hedgehogs follow his giant holographic broadcasts to hunt the alien prophet down. Doom's Eye, however, appears near a shield generating device and asks Shadow to fulfil a different mission - activate all four shields to secure the Comet against G.U.N.'s counterattack.

Gameplay

The center of the infamous Black Comet is crawling with Black Warriors, Black Oaks, Black Assassins, and Black Volts. There are no G.U.N. robots this close to Doom's sanctum, as there were in Black Comet. Final Haunt has a color scheme that ranges from red to shades of purple, with some blue here and there. Many bridges, pits, narrow passages, and Dark Spin Dash Trails are scattered throughout the level, which may help or hinder movement around the stage. Being the comet's surface, Final Haunt's large, gaping pits are covered by a thin layer of purple smoke that seems to envelope the entire level. Other features are Shield Generators, that turn on both outer shields and to block paths on the surface and inner ones to guard the core. There are also blue 'light poles' that can be broken and utilized as melee weapons.
