Cryptic Grotto is the fifth Zone of Sonic Mars, an underwater level covered with seaweed and several caverns.[1] It was planned to feature an undulating water background with deep shades of blue and green in the depths and brighter-colored ripples towards the surface. Dark seaweed beds could be spotted far into the murky horizon.[2]
The boss of Cryptic Grotto is Octocknik, a powerful armored octopus who attacks Sonic by spitting ink, throwing objects, and attempting to strangle the blue blur with its tentacles.[3]
